Super Mario RPG: Rose Town Walkthrough

Welcome to our complete story walkthrough of Super Mario RPG on Nintendo Switch and SNES.

Previously on your adventure, you encountered Bowser in Rose Way, who was presumably heading off to recover his stolen castle. You’ve now arrived at Rose Town, which seems to be experiencing a raid just like the Mushroom Kingdom was a little while ago.

Here’s our guide on Rose Town’s shops, houses, and secrets, as well as how to continue on to Super Mario RPG’s iconic Forest Maze.

Rose Town Walkthrough

Toads in this area are being attacked by arrows that fall from the sky. You need to go to the inn to advance the story, but there are a few extras to get before we go there.

Hidden Treasure 5 - Rose Town Item Shop

First up, head to the Item Shop on the west side of town. Hop up onto the bookcase at the northwest corner and jump to uncover a Hidden Treasure chest containing a Frog Coin.

While you’re here, feel free to purchase new armor for Mario and Mallow. You should have a good amount of coins. Mushrooms and Pick Me Ups can’t hurt either.

You can also jump up onto the outside of the building and go down the chimney to get an extra item.

At the north end of town is a Toad near a house on a high cliff. He says his son has deactivated the staircase that leads to it. Fortunately, you can jump on this Toad’s head to get on top of the hill. Do that, enter the house, and go up to the second floor. Do not open the treasure boxes.

Hit the switch and leave the house and the Toad will ask you if the chests are okay. Say yes and he’ll give you a tip – when you enter the forest and hit an area with four paths, go left, left, straight, and right in that order. Remember that.

Hidden Treasure 6 - House on the hill

Head right back into the house, because there’s a Surprise Box here! Go upstairs to the second floor and jump on the bed to reveal it, and it contains another Frog Coin.

There aren’t any more goodies to get right now, so head to the inn to find a Toad playing with a set of Mario action figures. Things take a turn pretty fast, though, and Mario collapses. Next, a star spirit will inhabit the Toad’s puppet to become Geno, who leaves the house immediately.

Afterwards, Mario wakes up from slumber. When you get the chance, save your progress, because we're heading to the next dungeon soon. Head downstairs and the Toad will say he saw Geno walking into the forest. Of course, his mother doesn’t believe him.

When you’re ready to give chase, head back to the world map to continue on to the Forest Maze.
