Super Mario RPG: All Surprise Boxes - Hidden Treasure Chest Locations 1

It wouldn't be a proper Mario game without boxes, would it? In Super Mario RPG, instead of finding treasure chests on the ground, Mario has to jump to hit a treasure box and claim the goods inside.

However, just as hidden blocks exist in Mario platformers, so do Hidden Treasures / Surprise Boxes exist in Super Mario RPG. A Hidden Treasure is an invisible treasure chest, and there are multiple of these scattered around the world.

In this guide, we've listed out the location of every single Hidden Treasure in the SNES and Switch versions of Super Mario RPG. Each entry will be linked to its position in the walkthrough so you'll easily be able to find out which part of the story the box can be found in.

Super Mario RPG: All Hidden Treasure / Surprise Box Locations

Mushroom Kingdom

You'll find 3 Hidden Treasures in the Mushroom Kingdom, and two of them are in the same spot. Helpful!

  • Item Shop #2
  • Castle (This Hidden Treasure is missable in the SNES version, but that's no longer the case in the Nintendo Switch remake)

Bandit's Way

You'll only find 1 Hidden Treasures during your time in Bandit's Way. Not very good bandits, then, are they?

Rose Town

There are 2 Hidden Treasures in Rose Town. You can get these either on your first visit when the town is being attacked or wait until you've cleared all the enemies out.

Forest Maze

There are a grand total of 6 Hidden Treasures to uncover in the Forest Maze. Make sure you don't get lost!

FAQs

How many Hidden Treasures / Surprise Boxes are there?

There are 39 Hidden Treasure scattered throughout the world of Super Mario RPG. These contain everything from healing items, stat upgrades, and Frog Coins.

Are there any new Hidden Treasures in the Switch remake?

Nope, the Switch remake has the same number of Hidden Treasure Chests as the SNES version. However, one has moved very slightly from its SNES location

Is there any way to make finding Hidden Treasures easier?

There's an accessory in the SNES version that will tell you when you're in the same room as a Hidden Treasure — the Signal Ring. You'll get this in Nimbus Land after you've completed the events at Nimbus Castle.

In the Nintendo Switch version, you actually get the Signal Ring at the Mushroom Kingdom, where you find your first Hidden Treasure. When you get to Nimbus Land, you'll get a stronger version of this ring called the Echo Signal Ring, which will tell you the exact location of a Hidden Treasure.

Do you get a reward for finding all the Hidden Treasures?

No, you don't, only the items that you find in the boxes and a little note in your Journal to say you've collected them all. You can also talk to the Treasure Box monster in Monstro Town if you want to find out how many you're missing.

Are there any missable Hidden Treasures?

There is, but only on the SNES version.

The Surprise Box inside the Mushroom Kingdom Castle is the only box you can miss out on permanently. It has a Frog Coin in it too, so it's worth getting.

You can actually go back nand get this chest in the Switch version of the game. So no more missables!
