Nintendo Life Most Anticipated Switch Games

Updated with new titles following the September 2022 Nintendo Direct. Enjoy!

We're now into the final third of 2022 and the rest of the year is filled with the promise of new video games to enjoy. We've already seen plenty of fantastic games on Switch this year, but there's more to come!

Below we've rounded up 30 of the biggest Switch games we're looking forward to. They run the gamut from AAA first-party offerings to promising-looking indies. Nintendo's habit of not announcing games until a couple of months prior to release means there may be even more surprises to come before the year closes out — we've already added to (and subtracted from) this list several times throughout the year.

We've had some cracking games in the last nine months, including the excellent Pokémon Legends: Arceus, OlliOlli World, Triangle Strategy, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Mario Strikers: Battle League, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3. The September Nintendo Direct delivered a load more announcements, so even though the likes of Metal Slug Tactics and Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom slipped into next year, there's still an awful lot to get excited about as the Holiday season appears on the horizon.

So, let's take a look at our most anticipated Switch games...

Return to Monkey Island (Switch eShop)

Return to Monkey Island (Switch eShop)
Return to Monkey Island (Switch eShop)
Publisher: Devolver Digital / Developer: Terrible Toybox
Release Date: 19th Sep 2022 (USA) / 19th Sep 2022 (UK/EU)

This one launched alongside the PC version of the game on 19th September. Fans of the classic point-and-click Lucasarts series have been longing to Return to Monkey Island for years. And what do they do when news that creator Ron Gilbert is helming one final entry in the beloved SCUMM series?

Well, some prize idiots among them take to harassing the developer with vile abuse. We can only hope that Gilbert knows how much this game means to the silent, incredibly excited majority that is looking forward to catching up with Threepwood and co. for one last laugh. It's out now, and we love it.

The DioField Chronicle (Switch)

The DioField Chronicle (Switch)
The DioField Chronicle (Switch)
Publisher: Square Enix / Developer: Square Enix
Release Date: 22nd Sep 2022 (USA) / 22nd Sep 2022 (UK/EU)

A strategy RPG from Square Enix and Lancarse, there's a demo for this available on Switch eShop if you fancy sampling its particular brand of turn-based battling. Blending elements of titles like Fire Emblem and XCOM, Square Enix seems to have a packed slate for the last few months of 2022, but if they're all as good as they look, you won't find us complaining.

The DioField Chronicle is out now — check out our review for the ol' NL verdict.

Life is Strange: Arcadia Bay Collection (Switch eShop)

Life is Strange: Arcadia Bay Collection (Switch eShop)
Publisher: Square Enix Europe / Developer: DON'T NOD
Release Date: 27th Sep 2022 (USA) / 27th Sep 2022 (UK/EU)

Originally scheduled for 2021, Life is Strange: Arcadia Bay Collection (now renamed from 'Remastered Collection') was pushed back until 1st Feb 2022 before the Switch version was delayed again until "later this year", but it finally got a solidrelease date of 27th September, which means it's out now! We're working on our review as you read this.

We very much enjoyed the sequel, Life is Strange: True Colors, and we can't wait to go back and revisit the previous games in the series on our favourite handheld hybrid system. Which is the Nintendo Switch, by the way. Geez. Kinda obvious, really.

RAILGRADE (Switch eShop)

RAILGRADE (Switch eShop)
RAILGRADE (Switch eShop)
Publisher: Epic Games / Developer: Minakata Dynamics
Release Date: 29th Sep 2022 (USA)

This train management game from Minakata Dynamics is coming to Switch courtesy of Epic Games, and will have you constructing railways on an off-world colony in a retrofuturistic industrial sim. There looks to be plenty of strategy involved with strategic track placement — hopefully a great fit for Switch's touchscreen. We'll find out how Railgrade holds up when it pulls in on 29th Sep 2022... which is now in the past. We're working on a review right now, so watch this space.

NieR:Automata The End of YoRHa Edition (Switch)

NieR:Automata The End of YoRHa Edition (Switch)
Publisher: Square Enix / Developer: PlatinumGames
Release Date: 6th Oct 2022 (USA) / 6th Oct 2022 (UK/EU)

We've had our fingers crossed for a Switch port of this for years, and Nier: Automata - The End of YoRHa Edition was finally announced in Nintendo's Direct Mini: Partner Showcase in June. Boom!

PlatinumGames is promising 1080p and 30fps for this port... and we'll be overjoyed if that's the case! However, bearing in mind how 'heavy' this action-RPG was on more powerful hardware, we've got our expectations in check. We'll find out if the developer has managed it when it launches on 6th October.

No Man's Sky (Switch)

No Man's Sky (Switch)
No Man's Sky (Switch)
Publisher: Hello Games / Developer: Hello Games
Release Date: 7th Oct 2022 (USA) / 7th Oct 2022 (UK/EU)

A big surprise announcement in the February 2022 Nintendo Direct, No Man's Sky was once a jewel in Sony's PlayStation crown before a rocky launch that saw developer Hello Games slowly but surely working on the game post-launch to ultimately deliver an experience that matched the pre-launch promises on PS4.

It's scheduled for launch on Switch on 7th October 2022, a little later than its previously-announced 'Summer 2022' window. We're happy to wait if it's as good as it looks.

LEGO Bricktales (Switch)

LEGO Bricktales (Switch)
LEGO Bricktales (Switch)
Publisher: Thunderful / Developer: Clockstone STUDIO
Release Date: 12th Oct 2022 (USA) / 12th Oct 2022 (UK/EU)

We're massive fans of little Danish bricks around these parts, so we're intrigued to see what Lego Bricktales can offer that's different from the many Lego games already available on Switch. It's scheduled for a Q4 2022 launch, and promises "a host of challenges and quests to test your imagination and building skills".

It's got a slight Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts vibe to it, and following the disappointment of Lego Brawls, we're eager to see a more creative take on a Lego game. Out on 12th October.

Sports Story (Switch eShop)

Sports Story (Switch eShop)
Sports Story (Switch eShop)
Publisher: Sidebar Games / Developer: Sidebar Games
Release Date: TBA

First announced in December 2019 for a mid-2020 release, this Switch-exclusive sequel to early indie hit Golf Story was delayed and after looking out for it throughout 2021, we're now hoping to see Sidebar Games' sporty RPG hybrid arrive sometime in 2022. If Sports Story is anything like as fun as the Mario Golf-inspired original, it'll be more than worth the wait.

Outer Wilds (Switch)

Outer Wilds (Switch)
Outer Wilds (Switch)
Release Date: 2022 (USA)

A 22-minute timeloop game that we've had our eye on for quite some time on other consoles, Outer Wilds was finally announced as coming to Switch in late 2021... although it obviously missed that window.

Not to be confused with The Outer Worlds, which is already available on Switch, Outer Wilds was one of the games we hoped to see get a Switch port at the start of 2021 so we're thrilled we'll soon be able to play it on-the-go — hopefully in the first months of 2022.

OXENFREE II: Lost Signals (Switch eShop)

OXENFREE II: Lost Signals (Switch eShop)
OXENFREE II: Lost Signals (Switch eShop)
Publisher: MWM Interactive / Developer: Night School Studio
Release Date: 2022 (USA)

Note. Oxenfree II has been delayed until 2023! We'll replace this entry with something similarly exciting soon...

Originally slated for 2021, Oxenfree II: Lost Signals will launch on Switch in 2022 and continue the haunting, narratively experimental gameplay of Night School's original indie darling from 2016 ('17 on Switch).

The developer has recently been acquired by Netflix — the company's first video game studio acquisition. From the first look we had of the in-development game, this sequel looks to be channelling the same coming-of-age tone and spirit of the original, so we're anxious to try it out.

Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova (Switch)

Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova (Switch)
Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova (Switch)
Publisher: Outright Games / Developer: Tessera Studios
Release Date: 14th Oct 2022 (USA) / 14th Oct 2022 (UK/EU)

Look, as Nintendo console-owning Star Trek fans, please allow us this one indulgence. Based on the rather excellent Nickelodeon show featuring Captain Kathryn Janeway (in holographic form) teaching a group of young misfits full of potential to work together as they journey through the Delta Quadrant onboard an experimental Federation starship, Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova's light puzzling and co-operative third-person gameplay have potential, too. Set across three different planets and featuring the voice cast from the animated show, this could potentially be the best Star Trek game on Switch.

It's the only Star Trek game on Switch, you say? Pipe down, Jim. We've got everything crossed that developer Tessera Studios can replicate the magic of the show when this one beams down (sorry) on 14th October.
