Flowerworks HD is, as the name suggests, an HD version of a Wiiware game called Flowerworks. The game now runs on 1080p at 60fps and supports the Gamepad for player 1 and the Pro Controller and Wii Remote for player two in co op mode.

In the game the player crash lands on an alien planet, and the objective is to plant special seeds and then feed pollen to flowers, creating fireworks-like chain reaction called Flowerworks. The game features a two player co op mode. There is an explorable map where levels are slowly unlocked, and the whole adventure takes around 15 to 20 hours to be completed. During its first month the game will have a reduced price of $3.50 in the eShop, after that it will be $6.00

The review can be found here: https://www.nintendolife.com/reviews/wiiu-eshop/flowerworks_hd...

I picked it up this Friday and I have enjoyed it. I like the music and the pollination mechanic. It takes some time to get used to, so I preferred to start on the easy difficulty setting to learn the ropes.

So I am creating this topic to share impressions about the game.

I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.

It's a nice game. I really liked the Wiiware version and prefer playing it with the Wii remote. It does get very difficult and very hectic fast.

I actually started playing on Normal, and was having a lot of trouble getting combos and thus stars. So I decided to swallow my pride and lower the difficulty, and I found the game even more enjoyable. Since you can change it anytime, then I did not even have to start over.

I've enjoyed what little I've played thus far. Got this free by winning a contest for game related Easter story. Looks to be fun and challenging.

Hi - this is Michael, the lead developer of Flowerworks. I might drop a few hints and tricks here, as well as my thoughts.

I like playing with the Wiimote as well - but now with Off-TV play, my now favour off-screen play using the GamePad directly. I use both analog sticks to move (did you know you can use them both at once?), and also use the touch screen for rapid moves, and bubble popping. Because popping bubbles either requires a pollen to pop them, or Follie moving at high speed ... its easy to pop them using the touch screen.

When I play directly on the TV, I tend to use just the touch screen (stylus in one hand, and two shoulder buttons on the other hand).

Personally, because of Off-TV play I never use my Wiimotes on my WiiU anymore (unless I have to). They still keep running out of battery too . GamePad is rechargable, so don't have the same issue there.

Any questions - let me know. There is a lot of subtle detail in the powerups too.

@Cathousemaster Always nice to see the devs post in the forums, welcome! I have you to thank probably because I won my dl code from that site. It shows the passion you have for your game! Enjoying it so far!

Can we cross-post to other reviews here? If anyone is interested, here is another review (this one is brand new) - giving Flowerworks HD almost a 9:

Overall, the review scores are trending around 7.5 (which I think is more than fair). Had 5 or 6 now.

It deserves an 8.5-9/10, thanks for developing this brilliant game!

WiiWare version got a 9/10 from me a few years ago. Still is highly regarded.

Not yet. The EU date is confirmed for May, but the developer is working on an update, so there might be some delay.

basically i just bought this (downloading now) because of the opinions i have heard here and because a dev took time out of their busy day to communicate with us directly, i always appreciate a personal touch lol

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

I am having trouble getting above 2 stqrs on some levels. Are there power-ups later that will make it easier?

Ok good, I normally try to 100% each level before moving on but with power-ups later on I can keep going until I get all the power-ups then go back and 100% them.

It was funny, I originally skipped this game because of its art style, then found out your mission is to actually chamge the world to a better art style lol

@DefHalan

I hope you enjoy the game. I found it hard at first and just went ahead and lowered the difficulty, so that is another option if you are having troubles getting stars.

I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.

The patch has just been submitted to Nintendo, in the end there was more work and changes in that than intended. Now that is out of the way, I'll be focusing on the European release - which should take only a week or so, before submitting. So with any luck, it should be ready for European release around late May.

And don't worry about getting 5-stars on levels initially - that is not the intent, and its almost impossible towards the start of the game. Just get enough stars to get past any gnomes blocking you, and come back later when you are more powerful to get remaining stars.

For the record: with the patch, almost everything is playable without the GamePad now. Some menu options, using teleport, and buying powerups are the only things you need the GamePad for. And you can play 1 or 2 player with WiiRemotes or Pro controllers, or whatever mix you like.

I'll come back periodically to talk about the powerups in Flowerworks. There is a bit of subtle detail on most of them...

First powerup - "Follie Firework"

This is the first powerup you can get, its available in the Flower Garden. Its the only one that requires a special button to be pressed, and is also the hardest to use and master.

When Follie collects enough pollen, she will hit her hold limit - and the pollen will start to spin around her. At this point, you can activate a "Follie Firework" - which uses all of the pollen at once to launch a firework (from around Follie).

This is most useful when used in conjunction with other fireworks, which is what makes it a bit tricky. The best way to use it is:

  • fill up with pollen
  • launch one pollen towards a flower, which will trigger some fireworks
  • quickly collect pollen to be full again
  • position yourself near where a firework is going to go off
  • as the firework goes off, trigger your Follie Firework

This will cause a big chain reaction, resulting in a lot of points, and hopefully some nice flower growth.

As Follie collects additionally powerups, her pollen carrying capacity increases. This impacts Follie Fireworks - as it means you need to collect more pollen, before this can be triggered. But it also means the fireworks get bigger - by the end of the game, a Follie Firework is massive.

As a nice bonus: if you play with 2 players, you can collect and trigger Follie fireworks at the same time. This always generates a nice chain reaction, and is a good way to score big points on its own.

For those interested (and not playing Mario Kart!) - the NA patch for Flowerworks is now out. I would like to hear some feedback from anyone who has got it.

The Europe release is on track for an early July release at this stage.
