These are my 2 favorite mario games, but If I had to choose wich one is better then I would say ......... The Original Why, because the stages are much longer then In the second one, there's the comet observatory hubworld other then that tiny starship Mario and the story of the first one is so much deeper and darker then in the sequel. Don't get me wrong,I really like the second game too and there is stuff better about that one as well:Yoshi is in it,you get Luigi much earlier and they brought back Whomp's Fortress and that secret place from Sunshine. But I just think that the original is just a masterpiece over the sequel and just can't stop being played

Retro games, Modern games, all AWESOME!!!
I personally liked Galaxy 1 more. The sequel had lost the freshness of the original, some annoying mechanics that I didn't like from the first game (Spring Suit) returned, and at times the level design just felt cheap. Also, I always like sequels less than the original games.
I also have problems deciding which one I like more. It's hard to say that Galaxy 2 was just as good an experience as the first, everything is better he first time around, but they are almost equal in quality. I think i might prefer Galaxy 2 because there are fewer stars per galaxy (more variety!) and Yoshi adds even more variety. The first one felt like a more complete adventure however, with a deeper story and so on.
I thought the 2nd game felt like nothing more than extra levels. The introduction seemed rushed, and lacked the depth that the first game brought with it's exciting intro and story; the 2nd game uses the same "come over to the castle and have cake" story as Super Mario 64. If you only consider the worlds and design, the 2nd game is much better. But it didn't feel as exciting as the first. I also greatly missed the Observatory.

It's so hard to say which game is better because they are both equally awesome! On one hand, the first Galaxy is more fondly remembered for its near-perfect 3D platforming (which was a breath of fresh air back in 2007 after the mixed reactions of Super Mario Sunshine) and emphasis on story telling (which the Mario series isn't known for). On the other hand, Super Mario Galaxy 2 fixes the (very minor) problems the first game had while adding great new features. Its graphics were more colorful, its gameplay was more challenging (Grandmaster Galaxy, anyone?), and the inclusion of Yoshi boosted the fun factor. Unfortunately, it wasn't as revolutionary as the first one. Don't get me wrong, I loved Galaxy 2, but I still have a soft spot for the first game (just my opinion).
For some reason I had to laugh at this thread title. On the one hand you have a fun, repetitive, and too easy 3D platformer in the original Mario Galaxy, and on the other you have easily one of the best games of all time and 3D platforming perfection in 2. No contest for me.
Galaxy 2 was pretty much a perfect game, so I'm going to have to go with 2. I liked the first, but I got tired of it after beating the story, whereas I got everything in Galaxy 2 simply because it was so fun.

Galaxy 2 for sure. Both are masterpieces fo sure but the sequel just puts the first game to complete shame. Everything about Galaxy 2 is just so perfect. And I love how every star introduces something new. it never sits on one idea for very long before its on to the next. It is literally perfect.
Definitely the first one. Don't get me wrong, they're both stellar games. However, Galaxy had a sense of exploration, which was dearly missed in its sequel. For this reason, I kept coming back to the first one for months, Galaxy 2: under two weeks.
The second game rocks, but I miss the observatory, and I miss flying around with the red star. Super Mario Galaxy 2 doesn't have the story the original does, or the heart-wrenching ending, which I loved. The levels in the second one are more nostalgic, but the levels in the first were more epic, in my opinion, because at the time there was nothing like it. The Original's levels dampens the impression the sequel's levels give.
Final Verdict: The original.
If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.
I'm donning rose tinted glasses for a game only a few years old. When I played through Galaxy, I was constantly in awe. Galaxy 2 was utterly fantastic as well, but being a sequel, it didn't have the same punch.
I prefer the first Galaxy, the levels and worlds were just more interesting. Also there didn't seem to be as much spherical platforming in the second, which was sort of the point of it being a "Galaxy" game. Still a fantastic game though.
Galaxy was such a unique experience, especially after the disappointment of Sunshine and waiting so long for Galaxy.. It was great to play something that felt like a true successor to Mario 64. Everything about it was done pretty much perfectly, it's one of the few games I can say deserves 10/10 without hesitation. I have to comment on the difficulty level inparticular, which I thought they really nailed. Parts of the game could be very challenging but it progressed at a good pace, so you never felt out of your league or frustrated at dying.
The second game definitely didn't pack the same punch for me and I was disappointed with the smaller, more linear levels. I much preferred the big worlds from the first Galaxy which gave you more room to explore and find hidden stars. The hub world was just terrible, although the addition of a map screen was appreciated.
Also, unlike the first game which really had a perfect difficulty level, the second game definitely becomes frustrating when you reach the bonus levels and quickly begins to feel like the game is just throwing everything at you to be as hard as possible, unlike the natural difficulty curve the first game had.

Definetely 2. More levels. More variety. The second 120 stars were not just "play through all the levels again" this time. Much harder. Yoshi. They were both awesome, but Galaxy 2 was just better.
