Topic: Wich game is better, Mario Galaxy 1 or 2

Super Mario Galaxy was the game that I bought alongside my Wii. It is an amazingly polished and satisfying game with a smooth difficulty curve. While it is probably too easy for people who breeze through Megaman games, the difficulty is perfect for the rest of us. While the gameplay is still the center of the experience, the cutscenes and the storybook add a great deal to it.

While the gameplay in SMG 2 is just as great if not better, the weak story and presentation make it feel more like a level-pack for the first game rather than a proper game in and of itself. The sense of "been there, done that" really hurt my appreciation of the game, and the fact that it never stays on one gameplay idea for very long makes the experience feel shallow. I also felt like there was a lack of justification for the adventure even happening, as the story feels like a weaker variation of the first rather than something new that "really happened" in Mario's life (lives?).

If SMG 2 hadn't been a sequel I would have appreciated it more, but since SMG 1 is probably the most polished game Nintendo has ever produced, the unfinished feeling of the sequel just kept nagging at me as I played through it. There's a reason the first won so many GOTY awards while the second was mostly ignored.

SMG2 played it far too safe so I'm going to have to say the first was better.

While the second one had a weaker story, it's a Mario game. Honestly I don't really care for a story in a Mario game unless it's an RPG. The level design was much better and the addition of Yoshi was greatly appreciated. I'll have to say that 2 was better.

Don't give a hoot if it played it safe, or if the original impacted you more. Which game is better at the end all things aside?

If you're looking at it from a purely technical standpoint then I suppose part 2 is slightly better. But I still found part 1 more enjoyable.

Now, what are the main difference between both games? Level wise, Galaxy one is more... round planets? Also did Mario Galaxy have a S World or something? Which one has more replay value.

I think the first one had more replay value because the levels were much longer and more fun to go back to.

I haven't played the second, but I'd honestly be disappointed if that were true, seeing as short and low replayability is how I'd sum up Galaxy 1's levels. I assumed Galaxy 2 actually fixed those problems.

Were the levels really that much shorter? I only remember it being fewer "open area levels" (SM64 and Sunshine style) and more linear levels, which I find far more enjoyable. Fewer stars in each galaxy also made it feel like you didn't do the same thing over and over, meaning more variety. I'd say that while the first one was a more complete experience with story and the like, the second is so much better when it comes to gameplay, which means it's more fun to return to.

I liked having a bunch of stars I could get in any order. It made replaying a blast, since I could get whatever star I wanted with a little work. It was less confining and every world felt alive. I hope they make another game with that feeling someday.

SMG2 is like a bumper level pack. More of the same, but nothing uniquely different. If SMG was on another console most of SMG2 would probably have been released via DLC, but seeing as though that can't be done on the Wii you get a sequel, which basically changes nothing but gives you more variety.

I don't know which one is 'better' but I definately enjoyed SMG1 much more because for me the concept began to get a bit stale in SMG2 when you realise that nothing new is going to come. Yoshi is ok, but not enough of a unique selling point in my opinion.

Hmm, hard to decide, they're both masterpieces The original Super Mario Galaxy has more cutscenes and a better hub world (Comet Observatory ftw ). I also like how you can play as Luigi after you get 120 Stars. But Super Mario Galaxy 2 has more power-ups, the ability to switch between Mario and Luigi later on in the game, and more Stars to acquire. The sequel is even more challenging, as well!

I'd say 1.

2 just felt more like an expansion pack to the first one.

I think they are not really that comparable. Both are works of art in their own right.

I would say Mario Galaxy 2 is better, the first was dull, easy, and very linear with no exploration aside from a few levels like the Beach Bowl Galaxy.

Super Mario Galaxy had an interesting story and the observatory but Galaxy 2 had better level design and music. If you could only buy one then get Galaxy 1. I recommend both. Neither of them disapoint.
