Well since I am not a huge fan of old school Castlevanias I would have to say either Super Castlevania IV or Rondo of Blood.

ive watched a playthrough of Castlevania IV twice now...what is it about this game that seems so bland? i dont think ive ever played that one, is it the whip twirling that got everyone? i got a lot of CV games for various systems, but somethings keeping me from this one. Bloodlines is awesome to me. and ill pick Dracula X over IV any morning

I don't know why you think its so bland. Sure it may be Heavy Barrel on the brownishness but I don't view the setting of Castlevania as taking place in a land of puppy dogs and ice cream. Stuff is decrepit where the spooks hang out though there taste in music is fabulous indeed. And speaking of music, Super Castlevania's IV soundtrack is the greatest! It's moody like Super Metroid. Sure I like my discotech Castlevania soundtracks and some of the rock as well but Super Castelvania IV nails it masterfully! As for the whip thing yeah that's cool but there is so much more to the whole package of the game than that.

@Ryno
i almost downloaded it on VC to see what all the hype was, thats why i watched the full playthrough for a second time and still im on the fence with it.

You should at least download it if not get a copy of the cart for your collection. It is probably the easiest Castlevania game (even on the 2nd quest) but its still grave fun.

As for Bloodlines, yeah I like it (It is classic Castlevania after all and there is not much more I like than that) but I thought the 6 levels was rather weak though you get two different characters. The music is just ok, stage 2 is awesome and even better with the Circle of the Moon remix. Though I do like the remix of the classics.

And man, I'm itching to play Bloodlines! I think i should just cave in a buy it already. and Isn't it the only Castlevania title to feature blood & gore?
As for Dracula X....Hmmm, is it really worth checking out if you've beaten Rondo? I've seen the final boss battle against Drac' and it's completely different.

Castlevania on Nintendo systems in NA up until the time of Bloodlines wasn't allowed to ooze blood so yeah, I guess it was the first big NA Castlevania release to have it. Castlevania's in Japan had in-game blood on Nintendo systems. I find it interesting that the awesome Castlevania NES cover has blood dripping from Drac's fangs.

As for Dracula X, yes it's definitely worth checking out if you have beat Rondo and you have a pulse. Did you like Rondo? Of course you do! Well, it's like Rondo but due to some legal issues Konami was not allowed to directly port it to other 16-bit consoles so they created a new SNES iteration. The music quality is some of the best you will hear on the SNES and the graphics are great. You will enjoy if you don't compare it to Rondo which you shouldn't because then it would be pointless like a t-shirt for Krang. Enjoy it as an extension of Richter's adventure and you will have another classic Castlevania.

Aren't the levels completely different between Rondo of Blood and Dracula X? Anyhoo, on Bloodlines I have actually played it and it's quite neat and a great game in the series. I've been playing Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth recently and it does a great job of hearkening back to the classics with the graphics, soundtrack, and gameplay.

Yeah, the Dracula X and Rondo of Blood levels are redesigned and there are not as many branching paths in Dracula X.

You're straight up insane. It's "'brown" is the best argument you can muster? The game is a masterpiece; the single best Castlevania ever made. Superb graphics, gameplay and music.

What would you guys say are the hardest Castlevania games? Iv'e been having trouble on the last levels of Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth, but I know the first game and Castlevania III are supposed to be quite difficult.

Haha, fair enough! But hopefully others can benefit from these replies as well.

On a related note, which would you guys say is the best Castlevania DS game? I'm playing Symphony of the Night for the first time and loving it, and from what I understand, the DS games follow the template for exploration established in that game. Which would you recommend?

i know this is almost 2 years and 4 months later... but you JUST PLAYED SoTN ? its by far the best Castlevania !!! and on the DS... hard one, on the GBA my favorite was Harmony of Dissonance, Juste Belmont was just too awesome. on the DS i would say Order of Ecclesia, i loved the story of that one, and the weapon system its amazing

I'm wondering if I should get Rondo as my second game... Should I? (The adventure on GB was my first)

Yes, Rondo is a fantastic game. I wish they woulda kept the original voiceover in the intro for the VC version though.

I wish Bloodlines and Vampire 's Kiss were on the VC. I'd get them. I only haven't got NES Castlevania 2 and GB Castlevania.

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!
