Keiji Inafune must be right about the Japanese game industry getting complacent. I mean are those tired JRPGs ever going to evolve? He's right about video game coverage being limited to new releases and reviews too. I want to hear about the drama behind the scenes, the inner workings, the dirt, the gossip... I miss reading Next Generation.

well that was one of the best things I've read all year.

Incredibly insightful, to say the least.

Non-binary, demiguy, making LPs, still alive

He seems very bitter. A little too much for what he's been through, I think. Pretty much all large Japanese businesses operate in that fashion.

He has rose-tinted glasses about western development environments too. There is a lot more drama there. See: EA Spouse, EA Louse, The Truth About IceFrog.

He doesn't just want change at Capcom, he wants to see a change in the way all large Japanese game business operates. He doesn't say Western devs are perfect either, he says they're more competitive and he's right. He's also right about leaving a job when you're not getting paid what you're worth.

Oh look, a creative mind quits a company because a company acts like a business. This has never happened before, at all, oh no.

Just like film, books, theatre, and the music industry, creative minds in the video games industry need to know they're dealing with business. No, it's not always pleasant, but this is work, not play time.

There's a vibrant indie scene for those video game developers that absolutely cannot handle being part of a corporation, and you can still make a decent living there (hello minecraft).

He makes some valid points but lately he has been coming off like he has his head stuck up his own you know what. Thanks for Dead Rising (the only decent thing you created in the last five years) Inafune but as time has showed us, the real creative talent left Capcom years ago when Clover was dissolved.

That's not quite what his problem is. He talks about how Japanese companies aren't motivated and aren't working hard because the incentives just aren't there. He goes on to say he could make the same games at Capcom with fewer employees. That sounds like he would like to dismiss some staff and outsource more projects. He's not bent about Japanese companies acting like businesses-he's upset because they're acting like bad businesses.

He even talks about video games not being treated like films or books when he compares them to Manga. Video game creators have no copyrights while they work at a company unlike with Manga.

Keiji Inafune doesn't need indie gaming to take over he just needs Japanese game making to become more Westernized. When Disney asked Warren Spector to make Epic Mickey he told them he'd love to, but that he doesn't do budgets and he doesn't do deadlines. I don't think Inafune or anyone else could get away with that attitude making video games in Japan. I'm not looking forward to Epic Mickey because it's a Disney game, I'm looking forward to it because it's a Warren Spector game.
