I have both in the house, and it doesn't really matter to me.
QUEEN OF SASS
It's like, I just love a cowboy
You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!
I hate having full screen stretched to wide screen. I don't understand why the Wii doesn't have the option to automatically put black bars around VC games.
I think you mean full screen instead of "standard". Though, I also personally prefer widescreen to full screen. To people who don't like widescreen: did you know that that has been the original format for movies since theaters were made? With full screen, you are only getting half the picture compared to widescreen. If you don't like it, then that’s too bad.
I can't stand those stupid black bars, please make them go away!
Sean Aaron ~ "The secret is out: I'm really an American cat-girl." Q: How many physicists does it take to change a light bulb? A: Two, one to hold the light bulb, the other to rotate the universe.
Well, 16:9 (or 1.78:1 if you prefer) is the standard TV size in Europe for years now - even before flat panels you'd have had to shop to find a 4:3 tv. "Fullscreen" is an equally Amero-centric term and worse makes no sense - pretty sure the images on my screen "fill" it just the same!
This bizarre schism in the USA where you have separate DVD releases with 4:3 formatting (even for films with correct wide aspect ratios which will still be 4:3, but letterboxed rather than anamorphic) makes importing DVDs from there a bit annoying, but I guess there's millions of people in America with 10+ year-old tellys or something. I'm pretty sure widescreen sets display 4:3 content just fine (note I'm not talking flat-panel versus tube - believe me I'd have a CRT if they hadn't stopped making them), so get with the now and dump that square telly!
I just recently bought 5 Sharp 27" CRT televisions brand new in the box to keep as reserves for my 16-bit gaming rig. These should last until I'm dead and buried.

4:3 is better for 4:3 content, 16:9 is better for 16:9 content and wider.
Widescreen isn't more engaging huge screens like IMAX are actually a lot more square. Widescreen also hasn't been around since theaters were made. Widescreen was adopted in theaters after TV's came along to entice more viewers in. How the west was won even used 3 cameras to create an insanely wide picture, the screen in the theater was also concave so it curved around the audience.
How wrong you are, Jebby. Widescreen has been around since at least the 20's I think - long before TVs were even invented. I can't remember the name of any films but I've definately seen some from that era in widescreen.
Anyway I get really frustrated when I have to explain to people that widescreen doesn't just add borders to the picture. In 2010 I can't understand how some people still don't realise this.
human vision is wider than it is tall. without moving your head, look left, right, up, down; you can see objects directly to your sides and beyond while not even being close to seeing what's directly above or beneath you. this is why a square shaped tv makes no sense; it wastes screen space that our eyes could easily see.
films have taken advantage of wider screens forever, but it's even more important for video games since they test your ability to see threats all around you. playing in 4:3 is like putting blinders on a horse; you can only see what's directly in front of you and your peripheral vision (which evolved for tasks like this) is wasted. i've yet to see a game that doesn't play better wide; for FPS it's a must, but even 2D sidescrollers like muramasa and nsmbw benefit from the extra screen. why a 4:3 ratio was ever chosen in the first place is a mystery to me but in a few years time it'll be a thing of the past.

The cinema format is 21:9 not 16:9 so even on a 16:9 tv you won't get the whole movie picture
I know its not exactly the same, I can tell just by watching a movie at my local Regal Tal Firs theature. Widescreens we can buy are the closest to the cinema format compared to full screen, so they are better because of that.
Films are actually still presented in both formats. Some movies are "flat" (closer to 4:3), some are "scope" (closer to 16:9). The screen in the theater usually has curtains or some other mechanism that can be moved in to cover up the unused part of the screen for flat format movies, or pulled away for scope format movies.

Yeah I hate this as well. Just to check, you are aware that your TV will have a "standard" mode to correct this? But yeah it's really annoying to have to switch TV modes when I want to go between VC games and Wii games.

Haha that's awesome. I really want to invest in a good CRT but I don't have the spare cash. I'm always worried that before I get round to doing it they're just going to disappear from the Earth :[
