Topic: Spyborgs: Revisited!

The school I work in is closed today so I decided to take a break from my immense backlog of Wii games to play some Spyborgs (I had the crazy urge to beat up on some robots lol). After playing a few levels on Adrenaline difficult (my first playthrough was on core), I was reminded of how much fun I had with this game and that despite its flaws it's no way as bad as people made it out to be on release. Now that its firmly taken up residence as a budget title (£10-£20) I'd definitely recommend it, here's why:

  • Challenging and lengthy (for a side-scrolling beat-em-up)
  • Excellent Wii graphics (some of the best I've seen on Wii)
  • Good mindless,old-school beat-em-up fun!
  • Even though the art-direction could have been better it still has that Capcom design charm

Here are my tips on how to get the best out of Spyborgs:

  • don't expect to much (This is not Devil May Cry or God of War) it's more like Streets of Rage or Final Fight
  • when enemies flash red block
  • save the life giving power ups until you need them (don't just go breaking all the crates when u enter a new area)
  • don't be afraid to back off and pick tough enemies off 1by1
  • knock enemies of platforms for easy kills
  • upgrade as quickly as u can (this improves your combat options greatly)
  • learn your combos (there aren't many and from my experience different enemies are more susceptible to different combos)
  • if you hate motion controls turn them off

Hopefully these tips will help u enjoy Spyborgs as much as me. Sadly this game was hyped up to levels it couldn't live up to, was marketed wrongly and had a few minor faults because of this it was bashed to bits by the gaming community. This does not mean it was a bad game though and will hopefully be a cult classic for those who miss the simplicity of old-school games. Let me no if these tips are helpful and if ur one of the few fans of this game!

Much love,

And here I thought I was the only one that bought the game. I like the game quite a bit myself.

Thought I was the only one 2, lol. Kinda feel sorry for the developers though as their not a huge company (bionic games) and the game was no way as bad as people made out. Its such a shame that many gamers didn't give it a second look after it got slated. Even though they hate to admit it gamers are and always will be the "puppets" of the gaming press, sad but true

I remember I bought it the day it came out and 3 weeks later Gamestop had it marked down to $19.99. I facepalmed myself because I could of bought another game with the extra cash or bought a few PS2 games. But all in all it is a fun game that has replay value so its all good.

I was a day one buyer as well went down from £25 to £15 in a few weeks as well, I don't mind paying full price for a good game that goes down after a few months but that cut me deep lol same with Little King Story, madness I say!

I just got it for Christmas (asked for it specifically), and I love it!

Like I said in the Capcom thread, it was critically deemed mediocre because most reviewers don't understand the beat-'em-up genre anymore (e.g. simple gameplay and some repetativeness is just fine). It bombed commercially because of those reviews, gamers with the same problem as those critics, and lack of advertising. I wonder what Nintendo Life would say if they reviewed it (hint, hint).

By the way, do you know where I can find any hints, cheats, or FAQs for this game online? I haven't been able to find anything so far!

By the way, what cheats has everyone unlocked? I've only got Vampire Mode so far. Are there any helpful ones?

Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.

Good to hear you guys like it. Gamestop has it for $9.99 new. I was considering getting it. Now I think I will!

Just got the game a week ago for only $12.99. Haven't even tried it yet, though.

You know why I didn't buy this title? My first introduction to this game, by looking at the cover, it looked like it was based on a Saturday morning cartoon. From that point forward, I didn't even bother to check to see what the game was about. I know, I know ... don't judge a book by its cover (does that hold true for video games, as well?) but honestly ... it appears that this was a criticism that was leveled at the game from the beginning, so I don't feel so bad about my impression.

Now that I know it's NOT that ... I'm actually inclined to take a look at this game sometime after February (when I'm done with Innocent Aces and TvC).

The $9.99 price tag at Gamestop means I just may buy this game sooner rather than later.

I actually didn't buy it when it changed from the saturday morning cartoon style that was apparent throughout the game (it even had TV commercial minigames) to something more executive mettled. It became a traditional brawler that tried to have a laughably tough as nails attitude. Unlike so many on the net, I liked where they were going with the original design, not just the graphics.

And to everyone else that hate/hated the design, what the hell is wrong with Saturday morning cartoons. I suppose Mario is gruff and manly for the hardcorez eh?

If it's 9.99 at Gamestop I'll pick it up tomorrow instead of another point card then buy the point card monday depending on what's released.

I too question what is wrong with cartoons. I love cartoons, and not just the darker animes and the adult comedy cartoons (I actually can't stand those, except for the Simpsons which is much more appropriate comparatively). Every now and then, there'll even be ones targeted at children that are also great for adults, like "Avatar: the Last Airbender" or "Phineas and Ferb." Then again, I'm more into cartoons than almost all people my age, as I've seen every episode of the Pokemon cartoon since I started watching it 11 years ago during the first season when I was 14 years old.

I guess my dad and I should've shopped around more when he bought Spyborgs for $40 in November.

I'm 33 and I still watch cartoons. Sure they are the ones I grew up on (thank you DVD) such as Transformers, GI Joe, Masters of the Universe, Superfriends, X-Men, Spider-Man and Batman. So I don't think there's anything wrong with watching cartoons. However, the newer cartoons don't seem to have the same soul that they did in the 80's-mid 90's. Power Rangers ruined everything.

Yeah, I agree that the Power Rangers formula is really weird and inspired too many copycats as well as countless incarnations of Power Rangers itself. The cartoons I grew up with were the original Ninja Turtles cartoon (still like it better than the more serious 2003 version) and the Disney Afternoon (Duck Tales, Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers, Darkwing Duck, etc.) in the early 90s. Overall, I prefer cartoons that at least decently attempt to follow the laws of physics, although one notable exception is Animaniacs. Sometimes, I can get too serious about cartoons or animated movies, though. [Anyone want to hear my list of inaccuracies (not counting the fantasy elements) from "The Princess and the Frog" that I've already come up with after seeing it just once?]

Interestingly, I just looked up Spyborgs on Metacritic, and the reviews aren't as bad as I thought. 14 of the 30 reviews gave it the equivalent of 70/100 or higher for an overall average of 65/100. If only Capcom had put some good advertising behind it...

I know, if marketed correctly this could have been a great release. If I were Capcom instead of abandoning this game completely I'd do some damage control, most people (this forum confirms it) didn't even know the game was released and its not totally unheard of to start a mini-marketing campaign to stir interest up again. And now with a low price tag Capcom could really make some of their money back. It would be a risk but it mite pay off. But in future they should support their gud games instead of complaining that theres no audience for Wii core/non-casual games, this is a hard, side-scrolling beat em up and people are wanting to play!

Actually, it's 3D-scrolling, not side-scrolling.
