Sonic and Sega All Star Racing recieved a 75% from the latest ONM issue. There games rated 70% to 84% are ones that are "entertaining but rough around the edges". Basically, its what we expected, a Mario Kart clone with a few minor sega specific features. The controls are responsive and tight, there is plenty to unlock, a good solo challenge mode....but.....the tracks are forgettable and the multiplayer is flat (not as much action as MK, and frame rate drops slightly).
Tracks include Sonic, Super MB, Samba DA, House of the Dead, Jet Set Radio and Billy Hatcher. No Channel 5 or Fantasy Zone though. No GC controller support. It does just about everything "well" whereas MK Wii does it brilliantly.
Generally, the revw content when read as a whole ENCOURAGES me to get and 75% is a creditable if unspectacular score. The DS version got the same score and generally a similar revw.
Super Monkey Ball recieved a 72%. The revw makes it sound fun but also makes it sound quite hard, especially with the balance board. It has a decent story mode, loads of activities, great visual atmosphere but is tricky with the remote but even moreso with the balance board.
Again, I think I'll give it a go, but I hope it doesn't try my patience so much so that I sell it on soon.
Well, I got Super Monkey Ball Step and Roll through the post this morning. Its a very, very good game. Good Monkey Ball atmosphere and no irritating music (unlike Banana Blitz). I've just completed world 5 and have to say its a little easier than Banana Blitz. The graphics are also a little more polished too. There is no jump mechanic and there are no boss battles (though I thought that put an interesting twist on the MB BB gameplay myself; even though inessentially). Its back to the old MB gameplay. I've completed world one and two reasonably comfortably with the b.board but haven't tried any others yet. I'm yet to try the mini games though the reviews tend to say they'tre decent. There are also other interesting modes like co-op, marathon and what looks like a free play mode. I'll let you know what they're like.
First impressions, a worthy addition to your collection especially at £15.97 from amazon!
"They say video games are bad for you? That's what they said about rock n' roll."
I missed out on Banana Blitz, but it's sad to hear that the Balance board doesn't work too great...since it actually makes the experience more frusturating and difficult which is a shame. BUT, if the wii remote controls are great, than i'm all for it. I had Super Monkey Ball 2 back on the Cube and I enjoyed it...but i got tired of it half way through. I bet with the wii remote it makes the experience alot more fun and fitting.
Comments on Balance Board are very mixed, actually. So it's not universally terrible. I just know that Step & Roll is lacking in difficulty. It's way easier than Banana Blitz from what I've seen (which I actually really enjoyed).
Aye, the difficulty is markedly lighter when compared to banana blitz which I enjoyed as well........, I still personally prefer S&R to banana blitz overall. But opinions eh. Oh and the balance board play is a lot of fun. If you're reasonably competent on the wii fit plus mini games, the balance board gameplay is fine. The controls are certainly not broken in that respect
I think S&S All Star Racing is probably a worthy addition to your collection too whether you have (or like) MK Wii or not. I'll confirm that when I play it. I think the ONM revw compared the game way, way, way too much to MK Wii. So what if its bascially the same infrastructure and gameplay.
If you don't think MK Wii is good, the good for you and respect to your opinion #sigh#
EDIT: Its actually often hard to complete the course in the alloted time moreso than BB. To get from trough the course from A to B is easier than BB
I have played the DS demo of Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing. It seems pretty good but just a clone of Mario Kart. I mean even the items have the same colours. I.e. green boxing glove, red rocket.

I played the DS demo of Sonic Kart, it was fine. Although it wasn't nearly as smooth as Mario Kart DS, the drift mechanic is really shallow and simple, and the items seem similar to MKDS. (Also I think there was some rubber banding, one race isn't really enough to fairly judge, when not looking for it)
I still need to try the demo, but I am looking forward Sonic & Sega All Star racing. IMO, it shouldn't be too hard for it to show up MKWii - it already has more characters that I like and recognize, now all it needs are more balanced weapons and more than 3 or 4 good tracks, and it'll be worth far more than Mario Kart Wii as far as I'm concerned.
