I think we're kindred souls.

The DS has a surprisingly large list of RPGs with a darker, and more western feel as well. Two of my faves are Dungeon Explorer ( Very Diablo + Gauntlet with tons of customization, including crafting and hirelings...er, robots, and a multiplayer mode. ), and Fighting Fantasy ( Daggerfall-Morrowind-ish... kinda. ).

Of course everyone else hated them. =/

Mazes of Fate, Dark Spire, Orcs and Elves, and the Etrian Odyssey series, are worth it for the old school CRPG vibe as well.

In fact, the reason I love my DS so much is because of titles like these. It's almost as if it's the only place to find them, other than the PC of course.

Wow.... I have all of these, and love all of them.

On the DS, my favorites of this style are Fighting Fantasy, which while short is a very good looking, very entertaining dungeon hack, and The Dark Spire, which is the closest thing to an English release of Wizardry that we're going to get.

The PS3 and DS Wizardry games, which were only released in Japan, are really good games too, BTW.

Yep, we were separated at birth. I still play Wizardry 8. It's an absolute masterpiece. Sir Tech's passing was a great loss!

I have to add something about the loud footstep sounds in Eldar Saga, just in case that alone was a deal-breaker for some. You can wear other footwear/pants, that actually have different sounds associated to them. Some are really quiet, and sound totally different. I've been thinking about this, and maybe this was intentional, as you can hear the quality of your gear.

I've been playing games now, across all platforms, for many years, and I don't think I've ever played a game where your character's feet actually make different sounds according to his/her footwear. I hate to think people may have passed on Eldar Saga because of the sound effects alone. Or judged it on a brief play session. It really requires quite a bit of attention to appreciate.

Speaking of Wizardry 8. I'm remembering the varied sounds your feet make in it. The scuffs, and crunchy twist sound when you change direction, or come to an abrupt stop. It really is the tiny details in games like these, that pull you in.

That, or I've got a foot fetish.

After you get a few hours in, the sound of the footsteps fades into the background (or it does for me anyway). As part of the background, I haven't found it annoying, and given there's no consistent music playing in the background... I prefer footsteps to no noise at all. That would just be creepy.

I love that I actually have a notebook to keep track of the many stats for the equipment. That's a real throwback to my pen and paper D & D days, keeping track of equipment stats, and it's a similar rush to the Etrian Odessy games with the map making.

I do hope this thread encourages a few people to at least take a look at this game. It's no game of the year, but it is genuinely good, if you're into hardcore and retro-flavored RPGs. And ignore the other reviews comparing this to Monster Hunter. .. The two games are nothing alike and I suspect many reviewers only gave this a hour or two's playtime.

I follow this thread, and it seems like my kind of game.
I'll pick this up when I find it for 20 bucks or less.
