Topic: Power backup for your Wii?

Has anyone bought a UPS for your Wii, and do you think it's worth the cost? They seem to start at around $40 for the lowest wattage ones, which should be sufficient for the Wii assuming those models aren't just complete junk, but I've never bought a UPS before (I always use laptops).

Ever since I got my Wii it always seems to go on the fritz every time there is a power outage, despite having it hooked up to a power bar with surge protection. Usually what happens is I have to unplug the AC adapter for a period of time before I can get the red LED to come on and reassure me that the power outage didn't fry my Wii. Sometimes it powers on right away after the power outage, but I get messages about corrupted files which mysteriously go away if I unplug the AC adapter for a period of time. The annoying thing is most of the power outages I get only last a second, so a UPS should see me through those.

I haven't bought one for my Wii, but I do have one for my PC. It works well (I bought it for my previous house which had terrible wiring and would trip the safety switch regularly) and it's nice to know that I'll have a couple of minutes to power everything off in the event of a power outage.

Before forking out for one though i'd check your power board - if it's just a supermarket bought one, they can fry after a big power surge and not provide surge protection any more.

Thanks. The "surge protection indicator light" is still lit, so I assume it's okay, unless that extra light is a lie and just put there to give people a false sense of security. I have used my Wii with 3 different power bars though, and it's been finicky with all of them. None of my other electronics ever acted up after any of the power outages, so I don't think there's ever actually been a big surge.

Hmm, fair enough - I imagine the light's just a fuse, and if the surge protection circuit was blown it would be too so it's probably OK. I don't have any bright ideas though - it sounds a bit odd if it's happened with several power boards!

Perhaps get in touch with Nintendo, they might have come across it before. Let us know if you solve it!

I got the UPS yesterday and charged it up and tested it today just by unplugging it, and the Wii wasn't fazed. Then like an hour later an actual power outage happened, lol. No problems with my Wii, so I think the UPS was a good investment.

Excellent! I like having my sensitive electronics on mine, just in case
