Topic: Platformer suggestions?

After going through my library of games and setting aside the ones I've always enjoyed the most I realized ... I'm really into Platformers
now I've already played a lot of the platformers on the NES and SNES but I've never really played any of the other systems and the only games I've ever played on the Sega Genesis were Sonic , Mortal Kombat and Jurassic Park

So are there any good platformers for the other systems that I should try?

hmm....might I make a plug for my buddy Nifflas' games? He's an indie developer, currently working on Night Game if I'm not mistaken (WiiWare, soon-to-be-released) and he's developed some fantastic stuff. His page is: http://nifflas.ni2.se/ and he makes nothing but platformers, at least at the moment. I highly recommend Knytt Stories and Within a Deep Forest.

Lots of good stuff there.

In terms of good platformers...there are just so many. Right off the bat, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the Castlevania and Contra series, both of which have stellar Genesis incarnations, as well as a host of other games on other platforms that you may not have played. Ristar for Genesis was kinda fun, as were the Crash Bandicoot games for PS1. The Bonk games were also pretty cool (TG16). The Wonder Boy series kinda seemed Adventure Islandy to me, and I never got into them much. Also, if you MAME, I'd recommend downloading Space Panic, since it's arguably the first game in the genre depending on your definition.

Randomly overlooked game: Miner 2049er for Atari 400. EXCELLENT early platformer. Also, Pac-Land is one most people don't realize is a platformer. Honestly though, NES and SNES contains most of the gems of the genre, at least in my opinion. The Wiki article on platform games (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platform_game) has some good suggestions too.

It's the other way around. Adventure Island is the downgraded NES port of Wonder Boy (the name had to be changed because Sega owned the rights to the Wonder Boy franchise, but not the actual games). From that point on, Adventure Island spun off into it's own series, while Wonder Boy took the concept in a completely different direction. The later Wonder By games don't resemble the AI games at all.

I suggest getting Ninja Spirit for the Turbografx - it's one of the system's best games, and a criminally overlooked action-platformer.

I hear the Bonk series for TurboGrafx 16 is great as well.

One of the best, I can remember is Mr. Nutz for SNES or SEGA Genesis/Megadrive.
Dont forget the Donkey Kong series, Mickey Mouse Fantasia and other Disney platformers.

Do you have Do re mi Fantasy for snes? It's a really cute little import game similar to stuff like mario only with a little guy that sorta looks like link. The graphics and music are just adorable. If you haven't tried it I highly suggest you do.

Reala

Ristar and Dynamite Heady for the Genesis are both great platform games IMO.

Reala

Outrunner

Ristar, Dynamite Headdy and Rocket Knight Adventures, all on Mega Drive/Genesis. 3 of the best.

I'm looking into Castlevainia IV as I have never played any of the series before and Dynamite Headdy ... kinda reminds me of Sonic

Genesis platformers don't get any better than Sonic, but if you want to get the Sonic games, just get Sonic Mega Collection for GameCube. It includes all the Sonic Genesis games including the lock-on games, plus it also includes Flicky and Ristar for a lot cheaper than it would take to download everything from the Virtual Console.

Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.

Well, Earthworm Jim was on the SNES, but the VC version is from the MegaDrive.

Mega Man 3.

The best strategy in the game: go up stairs and pause balls.

Mr. Nutz is a definite recommendation from me. There's also Buster Busts Loose!, Ristar, Sonic 2, Mega Man X, Super Ghouls'n Ghosts [mwa hahahahaha], Yoshi's Island, Super Mario World, Kirby's Dream Land 3,...
The list goes on!!!!!

@opeter - Fantasia?? I heard that Mega Drive license was a total bust. A LOAD OF TRIPE [obscure Chicken Run reference], claim some.

To each their own

DjPhatskillz

i recommend BioMiracle Bokutte Upa, Mega man 9, and Sonic 2 as far as plat formers go.

@starboy91 Buster Busts Loose is such a good game. i used to play that game religiously when i was a youngster. I wish that it was on the virtual console sooo bad.

KILLDOZER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

StarBoy91

Yeah. Too bad Buster Busts Loose! is a licensed title.
