I don't see how their line-up is that bad, especially compared to last year. Still, this delay has me worried they won't have much to say at E3, or that, Zelda will be delayed for next year.
If we're talking their first-party line-up only, all they have so far is Endless Ocean 2 (yippy?) and Super Mario Galaxy 2, plus Other M TBA (if rumors prove to be true, which I personally doubt -- fingers crossed, either way). S&P2 looks all right, but it's a Treasure game. That just leaves two Nintendo games most long-time fans would care about.
Not to mention that the PS3's lineup is looking pretty pathetic if you ask me, unless the Last Guardian somehow makes it into 2010.
Heavy Rain, 3D Dot Game, God of War 3, and Mod Nation in half a year is pathetic? Or do you mean first-party only? I'm not sure if any of Sony's studios really constitute "first party" in the way that Nintendo's do.
While I'm not surprised that Nintendo would delay them both, it seems weird that Nintendo didn't issue a press release on the same day. I'm calling it false until I see some proof.

Then I guess Final Fantasy is first-party, too, since Nintendo published the original in North America. But no one would ever say that. I'm not sure what first-party is taken to mean in reference to Microsoft and Sony, but with Nintendo it has always meant games developed by Nintendo. Probably unfair to make that distinction when comparing with Nintendo's competitors, but in the context of talking about Nintendo alone, it makes more sense.
Yes, really unfair especially considering only God of War 3 out of the ones you listed is from a Sony owned studio and 3D Dot Game Heroes is fully 3rd party(not funded, published or developed by Sony in any way).

A first party game would be any game developed by a company that is owned by the console manufacturing company.
Nintendo's first party development companies include (but are not limited to): Nintendo EAD (what we typically think of as being "first party"), Retro Studios, and Project Sora, Inc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nintendo_developers
But if Other M isn't released in June and is in the holidays then that will be be Nintendo's big thing for the Holiday with the 3DS and then the triforce will be broken Triforce=Mario, Zelda, and Metroid all in one year
I know those aren't first-party games, Oregano. The quote I responded to didn't indicate first-party only, which is why I mentioned them. I'm not even sure which games are first-party on PS3 -- never really cared for some reason.
Also, about the first-party Nintendo thing -- I thought that quote was about S&P2, which is only published by Nintendo, not made by a company they own. Whoopsy daisy! Just edited out my response, my bad.
it seems too early for nintendo to definitively know that zelda won't make it this year, so it could be anything else causing the delay. maybe now that the leak of the 3DS has blown the E3 surprise they're trying to take some of the weight off the new handheld's shoulders by putting more games in the later part of the year (the response to the 3DS in japan has apparently been lackluster so far), but to be fair i have absolutely no idea what i'm talking about.
i'm fine with sin and punishment getting moved; it sucked waiting half a year while japan already had it, but 2 weeks from mario really was pushing it. i want to enjoy these games fully without having to juggle two at once. but if sin and punishment is pushed back then it'll get too close to metroid, so maybe metroid has to be moved then too. no one wants to wait longer to play these games, but it admittedly makes much more sense to delay them. maybe that's as simple as it is, and zelda isn't a factor?
Hopefully this is nothing but a rumor, but if it does happen to be true I hope they use the extra time to work out some better voice acting for Samus...
"Don't make enemies, they'll stab your heart; don't make friends, they'll stab your back. Including me, including you, all men are trash. Don't love; don't be loved. Have nothing to do with other; live in isolation."
Damned rumor, why couldn't it have turned out to be false?! >:[
Oh, well, let's just hope they use this delay to bring the quality of the voice acting (Samus's, to be specific) up to par so it matches the visuals and gameplay. Also, hopefully they can add some movement to the first-person view, at the very least allow for the nunchuck to be plugged in for boss battles...

August 31 > TBA. Still, it's a more sizable delay than one would expect from the company that has been vocal about not announcing release dates too far in advance anymore in order to avoid such disappointments... especially given that the release date was announced not long ago. Oh well.
it's also confirmed that the delay was caused by metroid taking too long to develop.
"Although it's taking slightly longer than expected to complete the project, we're confident that fans will find it to be well worth the wait."
Nintendo said the delay of Sin and Punishment 2 was due to the close release date of Super Mario Galaxy 2. "We're striving to provide the best possible pacing for our summer game launches," Nintendo added. "A June 27 launch allows gamers to enjoy Sin & Punishment: Star Successor without having to rush through Super Mario Galaxy 2 (May 23)."
