After a recent forum topic discussion I decided to get your views on online functionality in games, is it essential in modern games? I'd also like to hear from those without an internet connection. Ps I'm tired so I may not have worded this right but I think it will make for an interesting discussion. Please state your age, when you got into gaming and your views on the matter.
I'll start: 26, gaming since NES era, online gaming is fun and adds great replay-ability to games but is in no way essential.

??, late N64 era, and online functionality in games isn't essential yet, but it may be in the not-so-far future. I personally view online play as a selling point for most games.
16, SNES era, online gaming essential for games like Halo 3, COD4, Team Fortress 2 etc.
Yeah I agree with you about the FPS's (although some like Metroid Prime & Red Steel 2 don't really need it). I've been hearing too many "no online, no purchase" comments on forums lately and its good to hear that other gamers don't want online play shoe-horned into every game!

15, the N64 got me into gaming, online is essential in most mutiplayer games, but not all.
Yeah, I agree with the multiplayer comment, although I wouldn't say essential but desirable instead. I think all games first and foremost should have strong single player support, even ones that are multiplayer. E.g. Wii Sports Resort, designed primarily to be played multiplayer but had strong single player aspects (stamps) aswell.

23,147.32 and I got started on the SNES/Genesis. As has been said it's very important anymore for multiplayer games, but I hate it when a game gets a lame online mode shoehorned in that nobody plays. I lament the loss of splitscreen gaming, as sometimes it's fun to get people together in the same room and play. LAN parties can fill in, but those can be a pain in the ass to set up.

I just turned 15, and I've been gaming since I was 4 or 5, with a N64 in the late 90's.
Is online essential? Hell no. Anyone who thinks so should have all their video games stripped and replaced with an Atari 2600. However, it's always welcome IF it dosen't detract from single player/local multiplayer.
23, NES. I can't understand why so many games are criticized for "lack of online play". Games like Brawl or Mario Kart, sure, but not every game. Whatever happened to plain multiplayer (id est, inviting people over)?

It's certainly nice....In today's market, games that feature an online component definitely get development-nods more easily...but no I doubt it'll ever be required.
23, Commodore 64/NES/Atari 400 (all at the same time)
16, Started with the SNES, and it is nice to have but it is not essential for any game genre. Though it does provide a great reason to keep playing the game over and over.

(20, Start playing videogames in a Master System, but already on middle 16-bit era with an Mega Drive also.)
Hey, you're pretty much a SEGA version of me! I grew up the same way, but with NES and SNES sharing my time. Same age, too.
Online, is nice, but it's really not something I use very much at all. I enjoy it when playing with friends, but not when random internet jerks are involved. By NO means should every game have online multiplayer, though. It was a VERY bad idea for Turning Point, Beautiful Katamari, Overlord, and more. It's ESPECIALLY bad when it's coupled with retarded online Achievements/Trophies like the infamous "kill 10,000 enemies in ranked matches" ones. The "win 50 online games in this mode" ones aren't any better, especially when the online mode is crap. Developers who impliment online multiplayer like Naughty Dog did with Uncharted 2 are welcome, though.
My Backloggery Updated sporadically. Got my important online ID's on there, anyway. :P
It's not essential at all. I find that most online games get ruined by the people playing it, they either cry about every little thing, or exploit every glitch & bug that will give them an edge. Or in games like the Conduit, only vote to play certain modes, with certain weapons, on certain maps, & nothing else. That's why I only play with friends online, random people can rot.
Flandre Scarlet, she's cute, she's colorful, she can blow up entire cities, she's also a vampire. Start running sparklepants.

Some people don't know anyone who plays video games or they know people but those people never have the time.
If I have the choice between a game that lets me play against humans anytime I want, vs. a game that only lets me play against humans whenever I can beg enough people to find time from their school or work to come over, I'll take the one with the online features. Ideally they should have both online and offline multiplayer
