I read that reviewers viewed the original felt like SMB3 while NSMBW felt like SMW. I think NSMBW actually feels more like SMB3 due to the addition of the Koopalings and the replacement of the item summoner with an item menu (which stupidly tells you how to find the items every single time you get items). The addition of Yoshi did not do much, because he's only found "when appropriate".

I never got one single SMB 3 vibe From NSMBWii or the DS version and the same goes for Super Mario World. It feels a tad like Super Mario 64 more than anything.
To me, the Wii game felt like SMB3 with a little Super Mario World mixed in. The SMB3-like parts for me were the item menu and the randomness of the environments (stages and overworld maps) while the SMW parts were the sparks of freshness. As for the DS game, I'd have to agree with Adam. It felt very Mario 64-ish, but instead in 2D.
