Basically, this will create a hybrid of traditional Mario elements with the "black sheep" that is SMB2. Few people really care about SMB2, and making it more like a Mario game may attract traditionalists.
The sequel is probably going to be that NSMB Mii that was shown off at E3. Sure Reggie said it's just a tech demo but I bet it turns into a real game.

Whilst I'm not keen on the "New" brand as a whole when it comes to Mario games, I like the idea of any potential New Super Mario Bros. 2 literally being a "new" version of Super Mario Bros. 2. I don't think there's much chance of it happening, since SMB2 is never gonna be as popular as the rest of the family (it's my least favourite Mario game personally), but it's a very interesting concept and I'd certainly like to see the results if Nintendo were to take the plunge and try it.
Super Mario Bros. 2 is my favorite of the NES Mario games. I don't want to see anything changed. Actually, it would be pretty cool to play another version of SMB2...

You're probably right but I hope that miis are just optional and player three and four also have the option to play as another Mario character like Wario or Waluigi and that player 1 gets to choose their character instead of always being Mario.
It's hard to tell if you get what I meant. They will use this as Wii game to show they still make Wii games even though inevitably (even if Nintendo wasn't blatantly abandoning the console) they won't.
If you mean the new use of Wii games for the controller will keep Wii games alive, no. Pikmin 3 is already on Wii U, most games on Wii are gonna be moved to the system like GCN and Super Paper Mario (although considering what early 2007 for Wii would have been like without SPM, that wasn't a bad thing I suppose). In an ideal world, they'd reduce prices of their new releases (even if just by 10 bucks) and try to make Wii U the new third pillar that they originally tried with having GBA and DS around (the difference is that GBA was still supported and even got a Zelda game after DS launched).
I think the New Super Mario Bros. games have pretty much run their course to be honest, as we're seeing more and more of a combination of 2D and 3D in the main Mario games (see Galaxy 1 and 2, but especially Super Mario 3DS). I'd like to see this trend continue on the handhelds and for big world exploration to be a feature of the home console games. I think there's room for both of those, but not the 'New' franchise as well. I did enjoy them, but am not desperate for a New game based on Doki or otherwise.
A new game with the gameplay of SMB2 would be interesting. They could leave Mario out of this one but let you play as other main characters like Peach, Daisy, Toad and Luigi. Or maybe even have new original characters. Though beating Wart again would be cool i'd like another surprise boss to come after him. Edit: Super Mario World 2's graphical style would fit the game well i'd say.

Shy Guys have become traditional Mario enemies. Bob-ombs originated in Super Mario Bros. 2 too.
Your re-imagining of Super Mario Bros. 2 is just New Super Mario Bros. 1 all over again. You probably don't want the player to be able to stand on top of enemies heads and be able to pick them up either.
Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.
I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

While Super Mario 3DS does look awesome, I am disappointed with the direction they're taking with it as I was hoping for a new 3D Mario platformer on a handheld like the ones on the home consoles. I would rather they kept 2D and 3D Mario platformers separate and I hope we see a proper 3D Mario platformer on the 3DS at some point. Super Mario 3DS will still probably be a really good game though as the level design in it looks great.
I'd love to see a new Super Mario Bros 2 (it's my favorite 8-bit era Mario), but it won't happen. The consensus is "SMB2 was not a true Mario game so it sucked!" which is not true at all. To attempt to silence those naysayers, Nintendo would have to bring a little bit more of what we traditionally know as a Mario experience and integrate that in, but I don't agree with the original thread poster's idea of changing EVERYTHING. I really feel like all it would take would be a few familiar enemies, some question blocks and warp pipes scattered around, and some familiar power-ups to make people more accepting of the SMB2 format.
The question is: New Super Mario Bros. Wii 2 or New Super Mario Bros. 2 Wii?
I want New Super Mario Bros. 2 Wii. That would be more interesting. And 4 player mode should be standard now for all platformers. Kirby Wii will have it. And Donkey Kong Country 2 Returns should have it too.
Ah speaking of DKCR, what sequel would you prefer? Donkey Kong Country 2 Returns or Donkey Kong Country Returns 2 ??
