Topic: My charge beam just dissapeared in Super Metroid

Here's something annoying: my charge beam? Just dissapeared randomly. I went through great lengths to get that darned thing, because I got to a boss that was very difficult without it (the big, fat, screen-filling aligator-like boss). So I beat the boss using my newly aquired charge beam and super-missiles, got to the nearest save station and, well, saved. When I turned back on the game my charge beam was gone. Just gone! I definitely had it before I saved, but when I turned back on the game they were gone. Still had my Super Missiles and the Varia Suit, but no charge beam. Is this normal?

Is it still on the equip screen?

Good question. I'll have to look next time I play. Certainly I don't need to go there and equip it? It automatically equips things when you get the item.

It could be some sort of glitch though, just be glad if you can equip it again

Seriously. I'm pissed because I've never gotten this far in the game before, and now it looks like I might have to start over. Though, really, you don't need the charge beam, right? It is nice, though, for that little trick where you charge up then roll into a ball and drop a ton of bombs.

That's very interesting. I've heard of some very weird things happening in that game, but never something like this. When you play it again see if the Charge Beam is still where you got it from. If it's not, then I have no idea what happened but it's really screwed up.

Edit: Yea, you don't need the charge beam. It can be very helpful though.

At this point, though, I'm not sure if I can get back up. It looks like I need the ice beam to get back where I came from (there's a long vertical tunnel leading back up, with a bunch of flying enemies that I could conceivably freeze and use as platforms). Now, technically I could do the old morph ball jump trick, but it'd take forever and with all the flying enemies one mishap would mean starting over.

Ah, alright then. Well you shouldn't be too far from the Ice Beam at that point, so whenever you get it I'd be interested to see if the Charge Beam was still in it's place.

If it's not there, and you don't have it, well you'll have to do with out it. There is a glitch that can put all the items back where they belong, while letting you keep everything you have, but I think it requires the Charge Beam to do it, so that wouldn't work.

Weird! Alright well I'm going to play it and see what the deal is.

Well Arkia was right! All I had to do was re-equip it on the Samus-suit screen. I feel really stupid now, but I still had no idea you could un-equip powerups (or why you would even want to), or how I even did that in the first place. Thanks for the help, though!

Well, there are a few spots where it's better to un-equip the High Jump Boots so you don't bash into the ceiling and fall. And I've been under the impression that the Ice Beam reduces beam damage when equipped so some people might turn that off for bosses.

Oh! And now that I think about it, there are a couple of special moves that can only be done with one beam + charge beam equipped.

You need the charge beam to kill Mother Brain if you run out of missiles fighting her.

The best strategy in the game: go up stairs and pause balls.

KingMike

Well, that would a kick in the nuts if you missed it. If you saved at the last save point in the game, you are stuck. In the room with a plot event, the door is locked.

It's always fun to see what the gravity suit would look like without the varia suit equipped, though I'm pretty sure the appearance doesn't really change. Its also necessary to unequip certain power ups to get one of those glitch-moves like the murder beam. I actually wish you could unequip power ups in every other metroid game.

I never knew there was this much depth to metroid games--and I consider myself a pretty big metroid fan. It's actually a really cool concept now that I think about it. And the murder beam? Yeah I'll be looking that up...

Murder beam is one of the most epic glitches in any game. Space time beam is pretty crazy too though.
