Yes this is true, however, it's only in the minority. I updated mine without any problem.

And it's strange you have yet to update to the fantastic 4.0 update.

It's safe to update as long as you don't freak out and turn off or reset the Wii while it is in the middle of updating. The update may take a while. Just let the update finish and you'll be fine.

Put your analyst on danger money, baby.

Vendetta

There is not a single member of Nintendo Life that has reported having either their own unmodded Wiis or those of anyone they know being bricked by the 4.2 update.

The update may take a few minutes longer than you'd expect. As Zaphod reminds us, just let the update take its sweet time, and I'm sure you'll be no exception.

If you are really that worried, install Bootmii/Homebrew Channel so that you can dump your NAND memory (including your purchased games and system menu) and restore it from an SD card or install an older version of the system menu in order to unbrick your Wii in the case that it bricks thanks to the stupid update.

If you have Bootmii/Homebrew installed, then you don't have to worry about the update.

That bricking stuff is a big bunch of hooey.
Go ahead and update, it won't do anything to your Wii.

I agree on the theory that it's only if it's interrupted. Just be patient, and it'll do fine.

So are random lightning strikes, Swiket.

TwistedVivid, if your Wii is unmodded, you aren't exactly taking a big risk by updating it.

Bottom line:

If your Wii is unmodded, you're really not taking a big risk by updating it (as V said.)

If your Wii is soft-modded, you're not risking anything by updating it.

I read somewhere (it may have been on this very site) that the update changes the boot operations of the console (to stop various hack exploits), so if it's interrupted whilst updating that part, your console won't be able to boot. It'd be like deleting that little autoexec.dat file on your computer (seriously, don't do that). Provided you don't turn off whilst it's updating, it'll be just fine. I'm on 4.2, didn't even realise there was issues until like 2 weeks after when I saw the articles popping up about the place. And, touch wood, my Wii hasn't cooked itself.

But it IS bricking unmodded Wiis.

Not saying it'll happen to the OP or anything, just sayin'.

Where? Do you even know of anyone with a bricked unmodded Wii? I think one person claimed it and everybody freaked out like it was Swine Flu.

Somebody set up us the bomb.

System Menu 4.3 will give your Wii swine flu. You heard it here first.

It is legit as Nintendo officially put out a notice that they would fix any Wi that was bricked that was unmodified. It is extremely rare though as I have never seen anyone complain they got bricked from the 4.2 update. Mine works just fine.

I've updated three Wiis from three regions. My NA Wii was vanilla with 2.2 firmware. It took the longest to update because it was so old (even using +/- to flip through the screen settings didn't work!), but it was still just fine.

I've yet to see any confirmed reports of a system brick happening due to this update of any kind, though to be fair I've not researched them. Certainly no one on this forum has said they've had a problem that I've seen.

I waited a while before finally updating mine, but I had no difficulties, and I've also not seen a single confirmation anywhere outside of the original handful of posts on Nintendo's tech forums and all the gaming blogs that jumped on it with hyperbole.
