I like the IGN Nintendo team, somewhat...but man, Craig Harris did a really crappy job on that review. I mean, I have no problem with the 8.9 or whatever...it was just he seemed so unenthusiastic...sounded like a robot.

yeah, but if you fail 8 times, the game can help you. I thought I wouldnt like a help system but after they explain it it makes sense and I am looking forward to it.

EDIT: I've removed my original comment because I feel that I was being extremely stupid and I didn't actually play the game nor critically take into account the faults of the game. But for those that DID see the original, can I be forgiven for being stupid?

Average those out and it's clearly a great Mario game, but one that doesn't do anything more than be a great Mario game. No online, etc.
Now for me, personally, all I want is a great Mario game, so all is well. If you are not a big Mario fan, then it's good, just perhaps not the bestestestest game ev0r.
I think that's a fair summing up of the early review scores.
One other point that the above poster made - I will play this multiplayer, but only for a few giggles, this game, for me, will still shine when played exactly as you would play Super Mario Bros 3, or Super Mario World. Single player, exploring the levels for secrets.
That's what Mario always has been, and always will be.
I'm really surprised the Gamespot gave it an 8.5. They usually hate Wii games, and all over the forums half that stuff you heard was "flop am confirmed".
The Game.
Is it after 9PM EST? You should probably ignore the above post.
GamesRadar gave the game a 7. They explained the score very well and the reasons behind their praises and critcisms of the game. Personally, I was set on Galaxy 2 even after NSMB Wii was announced and I still am, even though all the reviews I've seen for for NSMB Wii have been good. Might pick it up eventually if it goes on sale for a good price during the holiday season.
The review seems perfectly reasonable to me. He docked it points because it played it safe and didn't add some helpful features that would've enhanced the experience a great deal. It's the best of the bunch, but it's in no way a phonaminal step forward, or even a refreshing return to form.
And c'mon, what're really complaining about anyways? That he didn't call it a 10/10, Game-of-the-Year, Best-thing-since-sliced-bread insta-buy? He already pretty much said it's a great game, and would have no problem recommending it. Ain't that enough?

GamesRadar is usually dead-on with score.... via after playing the games I agree with the score given by them, instead of gripping about it before actually playing the game. The lack of online if very questionable. I have two brother that I love being able to play online with and this was a Buy Another Wii AGAIN.... but now Im not so sure. I think the lack of Online is a huge miss on Nintendos part. I work a LOT and when you get older your friends dont really want to come over to play Mario, so you go online to play, but guess not.

I totally agree with this score. I actually think it deserves a 8.5. There's multiplayer, and, uh, there's new power-ups. I just thought there wasn't enough new and this was the same old same old. I like the game, but it's so hard!

The game is mutliplayer focused and from nintendo who has the resources to make online multiplayer work. Obviously the lack of online multiplayer is a huge missed opportunity and worth docking at least some points for in a review. I could see if they make it traditional single player mario but this is supposed to be the first multiplayer mario experience.
Multiplayer and at least some online leaderboards or something would have been great:
Could have had top times in a level Could have had competitive online games Playing cooperatively without speaking is actually a very interesting experience at least when I've played onslaught could have had ranking to see who wins most and has best skills could have even had level editor and level sharing If you've ever played super mario war they could have had a mode similar to that
The fact that nintendo hasn't gone all to the full potential of games like this and wii sports resort is part of the reason wii sales are down. The big games on the hd systems generally have all these kinds of features and so have big communities behind them. The wii has yet to have this kind of game. For a single player game like metroid it really doesn't matter that there is no online but if games are offline mutliplayer focused they could have easily had great online.
In any case I only get upset about reviews when they are really factually wrong and that's not the case with this review. Mario is great but not everyone is gonna want to automatically give 10's to every mario game.

You know... I'm wondering how much disc space this "Help System" takes up. Think about it--this is an average looking game visually, Nintendo usually raises the bar in terms of visuals on their systems. The game features no online multiplayer--sure, it wouldn't have worked for Co-op, but there ARE Coin battle and free-for-all modes in the game--that would have worked. Maybe this help system just ended up taking up a lot more space than Nintendo had planned (they've already said they're not planning on using it in any more games).
