I finally caved in and ordered a copy off Amazon. This happened for two reasons: 1. I'm a hopeless Mario fanboy. 2. Save files, and this is the big one. I really want to play through both Mario Bros. 2 and The Lost Levels, but both are incredibly challenging in their original NES forms. The former only gives you 2 continues, which is positively ridiculous, and the second is...well, just hard.
And, I wanted the soundtrack. Yes, it's rather slight, but the fact that we Americans are actually getting a soundtrack is pretty cool.

Yep I cant see playing Lost Levels without the save feature but I guess youd have to in Japan. As for Mario 2 (USA) Wow I actually found that one to be the easiest of the 4 games. I dont know why but I only maybe use 5 lives if that whenever I play the game.

I think it's just the fact that it's so different. The physics are different and the gameplay is different. It still feels very much like a Mario game, but I didn't play it much as a kid. Those other Mario games had a huge impact on my childhood, so they're kind of ingrained in my memory. I'm still learning the ropes with Mario 2.

AH ok that makes sense. I hope you didnt take offense to my comment. I just never heard someone say that Mario 2 was the hardest for them. But yeah if you didnt play it much I can see why. For me the hardest was actually SMB I think I only finished that one once or twice. SMB3 was pretty easy as well just the length got to me especially when playing the NES version without no save feature or suspended play like on the VC.

No no, I wasn't offended. I actually don't find the Lost Levels to be nearly as difficult as people made it out to be; guess I have a weird sense of difficulty

Got two - preordered one on Amazon and got another for Christmas. One to keep and one to open. However, seeing some of the prices on eBay has me very tempted to go ahead and sell my keeper. One just sold about a half hour ago for $90, though the most common price seems to be $50-$65...

I got lucky and my parents bought it really early as a Christmas present. If they'd waited, they probably wouldn't have been able to get it. I've been too busy playing NSMBW, Super Scribblenauts, and Wii Sports Resort to start it yet though. I also want to wait until my youngest brother is gone, because having a screaming six year old running around swinging lightsabers around doesn't help concentration.
My uncle gave it to me today as an early B-Day present. Not sure when he picked it up, though. He called his local Best Buy to see if there were any copies there and the dude basically said, "We've got like 300 copies. Take your time." Weird.
Only 2 continues in SMB2? I thought it was supereasy to win extralives in that slot machine at the end of every stage.
Arbitrary difficulty inflation. The NES version is the only one with limited continues. The Famicom version (Super Mario USA) has unlimited continues, and I believe all other versions have a save feature.

for me, it is easy... in its SMAS incarnation. for some reason, in the original NES version on VC, i just can't nail the pattern as easily as i can in All-Stars. that combined with the only 2 continues makes it very hard for me to play the game through level-by-level on VC. I can beat it via warping, but I don't like to play my games that way

@tbd Funny, i feel the exact opposite -- i had the original NES slot machine timing down near-perfect after so many years that the SMAS version totally throws me off. =)
@theshpydar: we never owned the original NES version of SMB2(US)... we rented it a few times from like Blockbuster and borrowed it from my cousins, but that was it until SMAS came out and we finally had our own copy. my reflexes are all honed for the all-stars version, since i played the hell out of it lol :3

I'm glad I pre order my copy.. though I'm dissapointed on the fact it is the original snes version with no 16x9 support not even super mario world... but oh well... I gave my opinions in the nintendo club survey....
I missed out on the metro prime collection so I was not going to miss out on this one...
What the heck. Maybe I don't remember it right, or I've been spoiled with New Super Mario Bros. Wii, but Mario doesn't feel like he controls right in Super Mario Bros. and The Lost Levels. It's like I can't get him to stop and when you jump you can't really change your momentum. (Like I'm playing Ghost's n Gobblins.)
And also on the lost levels, on one of the levels there is literally a jump that is too long for mario to cross. I don't get it. A full speed run and jumping off the lip doesn't clear it. If anyone has come across this, what did you do? I don't remember mario being a puzzler.
Yeah, I was playing the original SMB, and I was thinking most of the time, "This is the game that spawned the franchise we all know and (mostly) love?" Something must've gotten lost in porting.
