Anyone try this out yet?

Wanted to know if it's worth the $50 for an HDMI upscaler for the Wii. So far I only read that it is a slight improvement over component, but I guess it also depends on how your HDTV handles the upscaling as well.
Note: I know this does not output 1080p for the Wii (it's impossible), I just want the best picture I can get.
Thanks for the help

I don't think it's worth it. Wii games weren't designed for HD so the changes may be minimal at best.

Well within a year Wii U will be here and that is HD so there is no point

I'm a little skeptical. Do really do much good it'd need to do some antialiasing at the least, and that's not an easy task (in terms of processing power).

It may be absolutely fantastic, but I'd wait to hear more about it before spending any money.

I used to have a blog link here. I'll put it back up when the blog has something to read.

I'm also skeptical.

It is your money but I sure wouldn't want to risk $50 for a "slight improvement".

Thanks for the help guys,

Still on the fence. I guess I'll wait a bit for more reviews to see how everything pans out.
I would wait for the Wii U, but Nintendo announced that the new system would not up-convert Wii games even though it's displayed through HDMI (booo). This is one of the reasons why I'm leaning towards getting the HDMIkey.

@WaveBoy: Thanks for the compliment. Hands down, Nintendo has the best mascots in the world!

I find this very strange. Emulators are able to do it, and I'm sure the Wii U would be capable of handling some antialiasing - surely it'd be a great selling point? (Particularly if they want to recapture the 'core' market as they put it).

When you start doing stuff like that you risk compatibility, some may look worse or not work at all. This is why you don't gain things like a better framerate when you play a Gamecube games on a Wii. They want the enviroment to be exactly how it was on the original system.

This is true, but I wouldn't expect it to be a big problem - thousands of PC games run on highly varied hardware with no problems at all, including things like antialiasing and other processing.

I'm not saying it's foolproof - there certainly are issues with certain games and settings combinations - but with a closed-system like a console I don't think it would be too hard to get it running well.

Hell, the Dolphin emulator has a huge list of games that run perfectly and that's with the added complexity of emulating absolutely everything through software.

You're right that altering things through emulation is not as simple as it sounds, but I think it'd be worth the effort - at this stage I won't be upgrading to a Wii U, but if I had the option of playing my Wii games in full high-def I'd definitely think twice. Nintendo wants to get back some market share among the core gamers, and this is the kind of thing I think appeals to them (being aware of gross generalisations as I say that).

It'll only give you an improvement if the video processing stuffs in your TV really sucks. At best you'll get a little bit less noise and a slightly less blurry upscaled image. It's generally not worth it though because the hardware in modern TVs is fairly good.

If you had a REALLY cheap TV or a circa 2001-2003 HDTV and you have a serious problem with lag and you KNOW this thing performs very well then yeah, it might be a good idea. Other than that no.

what I'd really love to see is the N64 3D Castlevania game running in Virtual Console in it's high-res mode without killing the framerate like it does on N64 but I have the feeling that if it's ever released on Virtual Console it will be exactly the same... or possibly even have the high-res option removed.

I bought something like this but it was much larger and required a power supply. I think I actually saw it on this site some time ago, but I cant remember. I plugged it into the Wii but only noticed a very slight improvement. I had to send it back though as it required aseparate amplifier for me to be able to hear any sound. How would this thing output sound? Would an amplifier still be required? Is that what the smaller socket is for?

I had assumed that the sound would be transmitted through the HDMI cable, but the website is a bit iffy on that. It appears to have a 3.5mm audio jack which would suggest an amplifier is required. From reading the website, I'm not sure if you can choose between HDMI and analogue audio, or if the latter is the only option.
