Interesting, but I'm still not convinced to buy it.
Did you enjoy the first? From what I can tell, it'll have the same kind of gameplay (obviously,) with some new added twists. Seriously, it's like Sonic 2 or Halo 2; if you liked the original, you'll like the new one too. It won't change anybody's mind either (the few that there are.)
Best thread ever
Feel free to add me on Miiverse or PSN.
Miiverse is Moomoo14, PSN is Moomoo1405390
if you like a hub world, you got it in the last game. i don't think it'd be as exciting to get the same thing this time around, so i'm glad they're trying something different. a world map doesn't mean the game is going to be totally linear either, super mario world had a pretty huge amount of secret levels and alternate paths to take. i'm hoping they take care to keep the same amount of off-road exploration in this one.

It's not like sonic 2 or halo 2. Those games suck ass, but Mario kicks ass.
I was stating that if you liked the originals, these were even better. Also, I said they wouldn't change anybody's minds. Seriously though, those 2 games are at the tip top quality, and you can't deny that. Halo 2 is pretty much the reason online games are popular on consoles, and Sonic had fun action and fantastic level design. I'm a Turbografx fanboy, and even I can admit Sonic 2 is a good game (not great, but good.)
Fast access to levels in an easy-to-navigate menu? What's not to like? I would love if the hub were optional rather than simply omitted, but this is better than no map at all. Perhaps they'll take this opportunity to introduce two-player alternating to Mario 3D. I would buy Galaxy 2 in a heartbeat if so. Having someone sit there and shoot stars is not what I'd call co-op.
about the map... "Is there a particular reason behind that decision? Did you want people to be able to get into the action faster?
We want players to focus on the joy of the action instead of getting to each game course. We wanted to make it as accessible as possible and as easy as possible for the players. Also because we’re going to incorporate a number of different stars and conquering all the stars is going to be one of the most challenging missions for the player, we want them to understand as easy as possible where they should go next and which places they should go back to in order to get access to the remaining stars. Also, for this time around we are incorporating the starship in order to navigate around the different planets, and the map is actually catering to the need to make access as easy as possible."

While I agree that would be cool in theory, so many of the stars involve exploration and searching as opposed to raw platforming skill. If you watched someone else do the level first, it would take all the fun out of it. While I don't think shooting stars is really co-op either, I'm not sure how well that style of play would work on most levels (with the exception of the comet levels, since those mostly are races/time limits/etc.).
At the end of the day, the way the levels are sorted isn't really important. It's the levels themselves that matter!
I think having a "Hub" world, or main place to select levels and check out what was going on gave the first game more of a story and less a less linear approach. Don't get me wrong, Mario games never really have much of a story, but it at least evolved as you played and helped drive the player along. I guess what this means is that Galaxy 2 probably will have less of a story than the first one, or it could be all in cut scenes and with no explanation as to how or why mario can move around to different levels.
@romulax (and everyone else) in that GI feature, did this come across as a bit sad for you? I mean it seems like he goes to work, comes home and then nobody is there for him. I'll play NSMBW with you Mr. Miyamoto, I'll play.
Can you tell me what games are being played in the Miyamoto household?
Up until quite recently, the most played game would be the fourth edition of the Professor Layton series. Because my two children have already left home, unfortunately nobody was kind enough to play New Super Mario Bros. Wii with me.
I am the one you despise. I am he who says what you really deep down know but are affraid to admit. I am the Anti-Fanboy, the crusader of truth in a world built on your lies.
I don't know, Token. Many Mario fans can attest to replaying the past games and still enjoying it, despite knowing where to go already from previous plays, so it can't take away all the fun. Searching for the stars (and then, only some stars -- many show you exactly where to go, and in Galaxy the levels tended to be linear anyway) is only one part. Getting to them is still supposed to be fun even once you've gotten them before.
But now that I think about it, the game would be too long for such a mode anyway. It'd be unrealistic to expect many gaming duos would play the game together so often that they could actually complete it together. Alternating play is best for games beatable in one sitting. They could always break up the game into two- or three-world courses for multi-player, but that's probably asking Nintendo to complicate things too much. I'd probably rather play NSMBW anyway, haha.

yeah, poor guy. i can only imagine what playing a mario game with it's creator is like... he'd probably demolish you in every way possible. which might explain why no one plays with him.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! I know this sounds like a bad reason but I am anticipating smg2 less because of this. It just wouldn't feel right playing a 3-D mario platformer without a hub. I like the comet observatory and wanted it to return but be bigger so that it had secret stars and the other 3-D mario platformers had bigger and better hubs and I was hoping this one would have a bigger hub. I know it wasn't as in depth as the mario rpgs but smg had a more in depth story that all of mario's other platforemers and I was hoping for an even more in depth story which i unlikely because of this.
There's a difference between replaying something and enjoying it and not being able to figure out how to do it the first time. I enjoy replaying 3D mario games a lot, but I'd be kinda bummed if I was luigi and could see someone else figure it out before me and lose that feeling of accomplishment. (Although, in theory, for the tougher stars, I guess the first person wouldn't always get there the first try, so it could work).
I am way too lazy to think of something clever. My Backloggery
Right, but like I said, for those who do care about beating it solo the first time, there would always be alternating play for subsequent play-throughs. That's what I did for NSMBW, actually. I think the bigger problem would be game length, really. Unless they give more short-term goals, you'd never make any significant progress before one person or the other has to go home, though it'd be good for kids with siblings.
...and i couldn't be happier. it means that instead of following the hub layout of mario 64 and galaxy, where you have a large room with many different levels accessible in it, you'll instead travel along a path doing one level at a time, much like mario 3 or super mario world. i like it; it's liberating to have multiple levels to choose from at once, but part of me hates walking into those big hub rooms and having to try out every door one by one.
I hope this isn't Nintendo pandering to the hardcoreists. I really liked the hub and I think most reliable reviewers did too. I'm disappointed that its out. Ah well, still can't wait for SM2 though.
