Why the Wii can still be the system choice for hardcore gamers.

This article hits the nail on the head, I have been thinking the same thing for sometime now. One of the reasons why I have feel in love the Wii so much and the other reason being niche games!

@WaltzElf he didn't say the weren't hardcore games, he said they didn't sell to the majority crowd that that has the Wii.

sighs IGN didn't read the gamepro.com.au article, I guess. Mad World, Dead Space: Extraction and all their "mature" buddies are not hardcore games. At all.

What is a "hardcore" game?

Who knows? That word is thrown around so much it really doesn't have much meaning.

There seems to be an expectation that to be a 'hardcore' gamer you need to be male, somewhere over 20 but under 30, and suppressing anti-social tendencies (and any number of other psychological deficiencies) with brutal, bloody FPS games. In reality, to be hardcore you simply need to live and breathe whatever it is you’re 'hardcore' about.

Rafael Nadal is a hardcore tennis player, that guy you know with every single episode of Star Trek on DVD and who travels interstate or overseas to go to conventions is a hardcore fan, and Uwe Boll is a hardcore videogames-to-film maker (although that last one is debatable. Generally hardcore people are good at what they're keen about.)

When you’re about to claim that Nintendo no longer produces hardcore games, think about Pokemon. Pokemon looks like a game squarely aimed at 5 year olds, and sure, they can play it, but my 500-page strategy guide tells a different story. It tells of the kinds of people who DO catch the entire Pokemon roster, it tells of the ultra-careful levelling a Pokemon to 99 that people go through to get the slight edge in battles. It tells the story that a hardcore Pokemon player (and there are plenty of them) would wipe the floor with someone with a casual interest in the game.

Simple - you cannot get so into Mad World, or any of the other "Mature" Wii games that you notch up 500 hours playing, participate in an online community around it, and perhaps even compete in tournaments.

99% of the "mature" Wii games are incredibly casual games - you might play them through once or twice, and they might put up a stiff challenge, but they're not games you'll still be living within a year after you buy them.

@Waltz: I don't really consider any game "hardcore" because that term is easier to refer to gamers. Also, some "hardcore" games on the 360 and PS3 don't even have those things you mentioned, and what exactly was considered a hardcore game before online communities?

It doesn't have to have online communities, that was an example - the original Pokemon didn't feature much in the way of online communities - but it needs to have big groups of people who life and breathe that specific game, and the game has some way of rewarding that commitment.

Frankly, the word "hardcore" is thrown around without any understanding or definition, and in the process it's become synonymous with either "mature" or "good quality" - both are incorrect. My definition, and the one used in that article above, are based on a factual dictionary definition of hardcore.

Like I said, I consider gamers to be hardcore, not the games. I don't see how hardcore can accurately describe a game

Can it be? A pro-Wii IGN editorial, and a good one, at that! This proves IGN isn't too far gone.

This article makes a good point for non-casual gamers to own a Wii (although, in my opinion, Nintendo has by far the best exclusive franchises even without counting retro gameplay revivals). I've always said that gameplay matters more than graphics. They should've mentioned how the underrated Wii exclusive, Spyborgs, is a spiritual successor to the 8 and 16 bit beat-'em-ups like the Double Dragon, Streets of Rage, Final Fight, and TMNT games that used to be so popular.

Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.

A game is hardcore when it's designed in such a way to draw the attention and imagination of a hardcore gamer. A mini-golf game is not a hardcore game, nor is a minigame compilation. Mario, Wii Fit, Halo, Final Fantasy etc are.

My core is somewhat soft and somewhat hard. I would consider myself mediumcore.

A game can be hardcore if it has a man and a woman and...umm...well, I'll tell you when your older.

that's it. i'm officially sick of the word hardcore. i was sick of it in the music world for about four years, and now i don't want to ever hear it in the context of gaming ever again. from now on, i'm just going to pretend everyone's talking about Contra: Hard Corps for Sega Genesis. cool game. you could be a werewolf or something!
