i think the levels are much better than any original donkey kong. some of them are startlingly clever ideas (muncher marathon), they really pushed every possible thing you can do in a 2D game.
They finaly made a game, that better then the Original ! That really "Rare" (No Pun intended)
You don't need all those Supporting Characters, to make a Good DKC game. And who knew, the Guys that gave us Metroid Prime, were good at making an Awesome Sidescroller game.
Maybe Sega should borrow Retro, to make one of there games (Hint, Hint)

Sorry to ask again but I am looking for help. On 1-2, at the very top, you have to go from right to left and then back left to avoid the clams(?) that pop out every few seconds. My problem is when I go from left to right i cannot jump and then hit 1 fast enough to hold on? I always drop or get hit by the clam. Any ideas? Do i need to just hit the buttons faster or is there a trick?i have the baby with me but that does not help me with gravity.
Anyone else had any kind of bugs in this game? I had one few days ago. I was playing with my little sister in the octopus level (world 2) and game's camera just went off. We couldn't see ourselves and had to kill itself so camera could get to right place. I have picture of this but it's taken with my phone's camera so it's not that good... You can see that we are both on the right side behind that wall and can't see anything.

I got this same bug, I believe it was a collision problem and the character got stuck inside the wall.. it happened just once tough
At least in my case I wasn't inside the wall. I was walking right hanging on grass and my little sister was just behind me then I dropped myself to the ground and camera just scrolled itself to left and we were left right. I tried to jump up and down, my sister died when she walked to sea (at least I think that is what happened) after that she tried to get back using A to come back to life, but she got killed again every time when she popped out from the barrel (dunno why). Then as I didn't know any other choice I walked to water and died. Then we started again from checkpoint and everything was OK again. Hope this won't happen again.
The problem with this game is that it feels like it has an identity crisis. It doesn't know if it wants to be a true sequel, or a remake/ updated rehash of the first game. It feels too similar and safe and they were afraid to give us anything else. Even the story is sort of a rehash, his banana horde is stolen and he goes to find it. Doesn't DK have anything in his life worth fighting for other than food? Can't we get an original story with new original gameplay mechanics and ideas.
I didn't care for the omissions of the animal friends and snow and underwater levels either. If a sequel follows it needs to learn from the mistakes of the first one.

i really don't see it that way. the music is the same but never once did i think to myself that this game was a retread of any of the old ones. or any game period. it's been how many years since the last dk country? a lot has changed and this game shows off plenty of new things that would have been impossible back in the day. i really don't know how they could have played it any less "safe" to be honest with you with all the crazy shooting-in-and-out-of-the-foreground/chased by spiders/rocket barrel type stuff they added to the series.

You just proved my point by trying to counter it. The music is the same, the level design and mechanics are set up basically the same. Okay so instead of just shooting out of barrels on one plane you do it on two? Oh how exciting. Not a lot has changed, it felt like more of the same but not as good. They must have been in the mind set that "a lot of people like DKC so if we make it a lot like that by recycling music, and gameplay mechanics blind fans will eat it up!"

I don't think the original Donkey Kong Country games had any mine cart levels or rocket barrel levels that were as chaotic as the ones in this game. (they didn't even have the rocket levels, lol)

The game itself is a fair bit more different than any of the previous ones... In fact, I think it feels fresher than 2 or 3 did. It feels like Donkey Kong Country; which it should. It has similar music; which it should. The gameplay goes beyond adding two planes, you interact with both planes. Or, at least, both planes interact with you. Each stage has its own feel, but they all have that similar "better go back to check for secrets at the very start of the level," or "hmm...this pit seems suspicious, I wonder what the chances are of jumping down into a barrel are and coming across a secret are." The visuals are much more stylized than NSMBWii; a much needed improvement. You can play with two players and the game incorporates that peanut gun and jet pack you get in Donkey Kong 64. This game is everything I would have imagined and more if I had wondered what this game would be like [15 years] from then. I do wish they had the swordfish or you could play as the parrot and such, but so far the level variety hasn't demanded it yet (I've only completed the first 3 levels). Oh, but the level map is a bit disappointingly simple and sometimes I accidentally roll of a ledge instead of doing a ground pound; however the game is never frustrating enough for it to be a problem. Maybe I'm just getting used to Super Meat Boy... All-in-all; the best game I have played on my Wii so far (single player). Maybe Mario Galaxy can beat it, that was a marvelous game as well. I'll have to see about borrowing Galaxy 2 from my sister during the summer. I really missed trying to collect thos dang Kong letters.
Sean Aaron ~ "The secret is out: I'm really an American cat-girl." Q: How many physicists does it take to change a light bulb? A: Two, one to hold the light bulb, the other to rotate the universe.
Seems like there's a little NSMBW vs. DKCR debate. Honestly, it's a really tough choice. Mario definitely plays better; in NSMBW the motion controls are minimal, and are used to accent an already-perfect control scheme. A little shake at the tip of a jump for an extra second of air, or a quick shake to activate the propeller suit. With DKCR, though, the motion controls are heavily integrated, which is a problem because they're inconsistent, and the game is frustratingly difficult as it is.
I'd say the level design is fresher over all in Donkey Kong Country Returns, but it's also not as well balanced as NSMBW. Hmm...I'd say it's about a tie.

sorry skullman, i don't really know what you wanted out of this game. of course it's going to play similar to the originals, it's the same series; that's sort of the point. it easily innovated more than dk country 2 or 3 did and definitely more than comparable games like nsmbw. it's kind of cynical to imply that retro were just exploiting nostalgia, it's clear that they loved the originals and tried their hardest to make their entry something special, .
