Will the wii 2 keep the gamecube, or lose it like the DSi did GBA?

Most likely.

Yeah, it was useful at the launch because the Wii had hardly any software for it but it's just dead weight to anyone getting it now. I suspect that any new home console from Nintendo will probably be backwards compatible with the Wii, for those reasons, but no more. On the other hand, if it's a much more powerful machine they might be able to add Cube games to the Virtual Console.

if it's backwards compatible with the wii, it'll be backwards compatible with the gamecube. the two systems are so similar that even though the dolphin wii emulator was originally designed for gamecube games, it easily played wii games with a minor adjustments. unless nintendo wants to move gamecube games online for downloading only rather than making the system a fully functioning gamecube, i expect it should work.

Please don't use the term "Wii 2". I have a personal thing against it.

As for the question, maybe, maybe not. We might get Gamecube games on the new virtual console, but that would only happen if Nintendo gave the next console a hard drive and if they decided to keep the gamecube ports.

That's not necessarily the case. The DS is internally very similar to the GBA too, but that doesn't stop the DSi from being unable to play GBA games. For instance, they might remove the controller and memory card ports as well as the ability to read CG discs; they're not necessary for any Wii games and wouldn't need to be included for backwards compatibility.

I don't think there will be any NGC backwards compatibility, as the Wii will continue to sell even after a next console is out, Nintendo will use the excuse of, the next console will not be a replacement to the Wii but a counterpart much like when the DS first came out and Nintendo was still selling the GBA.

Its the most common name that people have adopted for calling Nintendo's next console since we have no idea what it's real name is. Its most likely not going to be called Wii 2. We'll change the term when Nintendo reveals something more official even if its just a project name.

You may have a personal thing against it for whatever reason, but couldn't you just frown when you see it and move on?

As for the topic itself, I'd like it if they did keep backwards compatibility with the Gamecube but would not be surprised if it was dropped. The Gamecube controller is the best one to use for some Wii games though but GBA functionality was essential for some DS games but that didn't save the GBA slot being dropped for the DSi. So I couldn't say Gamecube compatibility to be safe. I would imagine that storage would be quite large (or has the option of being quite large) - just as you can download XBOX games on the XBOX 360, so too I think that you would be able to download full Gamecube games and possibly Wii games on the next console. Or that may be me asking too much from Nintendo. Its hard to predict what they'll do these days; some of their decisions can be quite random or detrimental to users getting the maximum enjoyment out of their consoles.

I can't wait to find out more about Wii 2

I don't care if it's backward compatible, I have a gamecube and a Wii 1 to scratch that itch. If the Wii 2 is gonna be the console we are hoping for, I think they need to move away from Wii 1 and GC, and forget them!

I've never really understood the fascination with backwards compatibility. Just keep your old systems and your good to go.

Unless they break. But I suppose you could find a new or used one of that broken console.

If the Wii is backwards compatible to it, there's a pretty high possibility. Why? Look at games like Brawl, Mario Kart, and Sin and Punishment 2. They offer Gamecube controller support, so if their new system can play Wii games, I'm sure we'll be able to plug in a Gamecube controller, so it'll probably allow the use for Gamecube games.

It's convenient yes, but I don't want convenience with the Wii 2, I want power, housed in a small and quiet little box. If they have to dump backwards compatibility I won't mind one bit.

Let's... push... things... forward!

I don't think Wii 2 will have backwards compatibility with either, not through physical media. You might be able to download these games or have them on a different format (SD cards).

Have you tried classic controller pro? That's propably the best controller ever.

I think it's more likely that Nintendo would launch the GameCube on the Virtual Console, and that's what I'd prefer too. =)

dang, i hope so. if not, i dunno if i'll be willing to trade in my Wii... my GC collection is getting big... and i don't want to lose those games... or have t re-download them from a "VC2" while still missing out on some of my favorite GC titles that i currently own.

You all seem to forget that the GC emulator in the Wii is a completely separate system that requires specific software to play the GC games. Have you ever noticed that your Wii remotes turn off while playing GC games? I doubt Wii 2 will have GC software for this reason

If they make GC games for the VC they'd better allow for Classic Controller compatibility so I can play Legend of Zelda FSA in SNES-style.
