So, I know it's not possible now, but could Nintendo possibly allow the classic controller to play Gamecube games via a system update, or is this just a pipedream?
Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. - 1 Corinthians 10:31 (NKJV)
If they released a Classic Controller that could be connected through the GCN ports (or an adaptor for the job), then theoretically yes. It has the right number of buttons and sticks. I doubt they'd ever have any reason to, though. Gamecube controller works best for Gamecube games.

Actually, maybe not. Gamecube controller has analogue/digital L and R buttons (it can detect how far they're pressed in, and has a normal clicky button at the bottom), whilst the Classic Controller doesn't. I know very few games made use of the analogue aspect of the L/R buttons, but it's a limitation nonetheless.
@Raylax, exactly my point. it would work for a lot of games, but not for all, and thus it wouldn't ever happen... though i wouldn't be surprised if you could find a basement-made adapter on the black market somewhere.

Yes, but they would have to make a Gamecube port for it. When the Wii is in Gamecube mode, all Wii operations are turned off (hence why the Wii remote does not interact with the Wii)
I'm quite sure the Classic Controller has analogue L and R buttons... at least the non-pro version does. The reason the Classic Controller doesn't work for Gamecube games (on the Wii and without an adapter) is because the Wii hardware goes into a gamecube mode when its running Gamecube software. The software only sees an underclocked Wii CPU and GPU (down to the level of the Gamecube) the Gamecube controller ports and Gamecube memory cards.
Two advantages to this. It ensures that Gamecube games will always work so that firmware updates won't break compatibility and it closes off the "Wii parts" of the console from Gamecube exploits. The reason you can't use the Classic Controller is the same reason you can't save Gamecube saves to the Wii system memory. Personally I think this is better than the PS3 and 360's approach which have both had compatibility problems.

I much prefer the Gamecube controller (when the games are properly optimized for it, of course). It reflects a completely different control philosophy from the CC, one that evolved from the N64. It's not just a matter of four identical buttons on the right, but one large "home" or primary button that is generally context-sensitive, with the smaller B-button to roll onto with your thumb, and the two differently shaped additional buttons surrounding it at the top. The C-stick is of course just the evolution of the C-buttons, keeping intact the idea that it's primarily a camera control rather than something to be used for dual analog (personally I hate dual analog games). But the best part of it is the core Nintendo control idea: every button feels different from the others, so that it's never just a matter of placement.
Playing WindWaker, for instance, on the CC would utterly ruin its smooth GC controls, IMO.
I don't even own a CC, I have Wavebirds so don't need to. Yes I know, the SNES issue, but I just deal with that, cos I'm h-core. I'd get a Pro, but just like the CC, I don't want a cable and a wiimote flapping about. That would annoy me.

I agree with everything here. The GameCube controller also has the primary left analog stick in a better position for my left thumb. Sure, the other way works better for dual analog games, but like wariowoods, I don't like that control scheme. My first console FPS is the Conduit, because it uses great Wii motion controls instead of dual analog controls, which I think makes it better than the Halo games or any other dual analog FPS. I also prefer using an analog stick for everything, even SNES and Genesis games, and of course only GC Controllers can play GameCube games, so I'll never get a Classic Controller.
Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.

I use a Classic Linker and an extension cord to use my Classic Controller with retro compilations on Gamecube (and instead of a Gamecube controller in Metal Slug Anthology, where I just don't like the feel of the analogue stick and the crappy Gamecube d-pad doesn't cut it), but if it's an original Gamecube title I use the Gamecube controller.
