Topic: Are Sony and Microsoft's Sales Going to Blow Nintendo Away This Xmas?

Who cares? Nintendo are still sitting on the mountain of cash created by Pokemonz, DS (family), and Wii. The others, iirc, made a loss for some time on their current gen' consoles. They may win this battle, but we all know who won the war.

Sorry man, you don't know anything about business. You should probably stop yourself now before you put your foot in it more.

And to simply dismiss your agument in a few words - both Microsoft and Sony innovate. Both Microsoft and Sony have R & D budgets that make Nintendo's look like a high school kid's pocket money. To take a technology that looks most like a copy of Nintendos: Both Kinect and Move feature a number of innovations that the Wiimote does not have. Ergo your whole argument is flawed. End of story.

Who said anything about R&D? People keep throwing in random subjects as if to try to prove me wrong somehow. First copying spurs innovation, "wall of text" now this nonsense??

R&D does not equal innovation. It has nothing to do with it. If anything its quite the contrary. But no reason to get in depth here. What for? So someone can throw in some random response like: "No I disagree a big R&D equals more innovation".

The Wii is obviously losing some steam. BUT! November could easily change that. Red Wii, Goldeneye, DKCR, Epic Mickey, etc. etc. And Nintendo always does better around the holidays. So.... yeah.

I feel real sorry for anyone who thinks 'motion gaming' is the natural course of evolution at this particular moment, and not a knee-jerk reaction to Nintendo's runaway success.

You would have to be absolutely blind.

I mean, come on. We're five years into this. The other two are kinda late to the party, doncha think? And I don't care how you gussie it up, motion gaming is motion gaming. Only patents make sure they aren't identical.

What were the big reveals at the last E3?

Microsoft - Motion controls.
Sony - Motion controls.
Nintendo - 3D portable gaming.

Oops! What happend guys? They both decided to play catch up at the same time, meanwhile, Nintendo dropped a bomb on them and pulled ahead... again.

So... it was just an incredible coincidence, right at this moment and time, that both Microsoft, and Sony became amazingly 'creative' and decided that motion gaming was the way of the future? Even though they, most of their fans, and an uncomfortably large portion of the media, relentlessly made fun of 'waggle' gaming? I don't think so. If there weren't almost 80 million Wiis out there, there would be no motion gaming at this particular time.

I'm not going to address how often Ninty's been copied. You can Google that, and read it all night long, Ninty themselves have even called Sony out on it. Mostly over controllers.

Anyhoo, wake up! This isn't about innovation, it's about a demographic, a target market, one that Ninty sowed up long ago. Like I said before, shows just how much the other guys don't get it.

...And, sorry for another long rant, but even Iwata said back in August, I think, that the reason they're keeping tight lipped about the Wii's successor, is for fear of being copied. It's gonna be another game changer, bet on it.

GREAT points stated here. This should be logical but many people still don't get it. Also bet that by the time the PSP gets 3D a new innovation will come forth from.... You already know who. Copy cats move sideways, innovators move forward.

So Move and Kinect built off of what Nintendo started, while theoretically improving it, or going in a different direction. That's still technically innovation, in a way.

The Wii was Sony's and Microsoft's market research, I don't know about development. Kinect at least attempted to be different, but as ever, Sony took what was already there and stuck a blob on it. Wow!

LOL!! Sad but true. On a brighter note Nintendo's R&D is huge now! Something like 15 times more than what they had during the Gamecube.

LOL!! Sad but true. On a brighter note Nintendo's R&D is huge now! Something like 15 times more than what they had during the Gamecube.

And yet it's a tiny fraction on what Sony and Microsoft put into R & D. Granted, both those companies have more concerns than gaming, but nonetheless.

R&D does not equal innovation.

Yes it does. That's the explicit purpose of R & D.

It has nothing to do with it.

Yes it does.

If anything its quite the contrary.

What?

But no reason to get in depth here. What for? So someone can throw in some random response like: "No I disagree a big R&D equals more innovation".

I'm just going to put this out there: there's no reason to get involved in a discussion because you know sweet f-all about how businesses work, or even what innovation is. You're ranting, like a true fanboy, and that's the reason not to get in-depth.

Both Kinect and Move feature a number of innovations that the Wiimote does have.

What? Kinect and Move both go far beyond what Wiimote is capable of. You might as well claim the PlayStation is a copy of the NES because they both play games while you're at it.

Once again I suggest you stop trying to discuss business when 1) you clearly don't know enough about it and 2) you're letting fanboyism taint your opinions. Business doesn't play favourites and there are no "fans" in business discussions.

I hope so.

Am I being unreasonable to myself for being keen on Golden Sun DS, despite not enjoying the GBA games?

Off topic, but I have to know.

You're not enjoying the GBA games so unreasonable: definitely.

Puzzle RPGs = not my thing. That bit's not unreasonable, but giving a series a third chance?

Man I wish Camelot would just throw in the towel and do a traditional JRPG. Golden Sun would be awesome in the hands of Square Enix. (and yes I know what your response will likely be, but really, your tastes do not objectively dictate what is and isn't quality, so I stand by that statement).

That's a good question... I mean, I can tell from videos that the battle system itself is pretty damn similar, so if that was your main issue then probably, but if it was more things like the encounter rates were too high or the story grated on your nerves and the dialogue was too wordy, I can't be too sure just because I'm not sure how they've dealt with those particular issues.

To me it looks to be less derivative than the first two were. A number of the characters are much more visually interesting and the locales look they have a lot more going on, so... I guess overall I wouldn't say it's unreasonable to feel that way.

off-topic whee

EDIT FOR GREAT JUSTICE: If it's the puzzles then I don't think that bit is going to change a whole lot; it looks very puzzly, so there's that, but I don't think it's unreasonable to give it one last chance since it's in a genre you like. After three though, if you don't like it, then yes it would be, lol

I really, really enjoyed the combat of Golden Sun - that's how I managed to finish the two GBA games.

The story I also found enjoyable.

What I didn't enjoy were the damn puzzles in each dungeon. If you're gonna have puzzles, then great, but turn off the encounter rate while you do so. Random battles breaking up the flow of a puzzle = dealbreaker. If Golden Sun DS fixes that then I probably have a new favourite RPG.

Noire

Ahhkay, well sadly, I have no idea. There's nothing in the game footage that I can use to determine that... they keep the battle scenes and the puzzle scenes distinctly separate in the videos, so no dice, really.

I think though that if you like the combat and enjoyed the story it's not at all unreasonable to want to go for one more time.

Their was a psynergy that prevented enemy encounters for a while. Granted it was semi-hidden since you needed certain Djinn combinations to get it.

... Or they could have just turned off encounters over the course of a puzzle.

Seriously, Golden Sun had good qualities, but that element of the game was very poor design
