Maybe its because that game came out in 1986 and the fact that there isnt any multiplayer in it, that could be the problem? Of course thats just a guess

If it's the same online mechanics as the PS360 version, you're always in an online 'party' in the multiplayer lobby, even when you're playing alone.
You can set it to private/invite only somewhere in the menu.
Not being able to join your friends could be down to NAT types (how open your router connection is). It may take some fiddling and you (or your friends) may have to do some port forwarding to it running smoothly.
As for the WiiU being for amateurs; Call of Duty is for amateurs, regardless of platform.
With each iteration of the series, the MP has further and further removed the player's skill from being a factor in what determines who kills and who gets killed.
The AI of computer controlled kill streaks and luck sway the tide of battle, not team work.
These so-called "pro gamers" that now inhabit the CoD community wouldn't know a skill based game even if it smacked them in the face.

Actually I can help you with this game as I still have a pirated copy on my Amiga 500
Update... ok I'm back hope you have a pen at hand because this is what you do.
Helicopter lands on top of shopping plaza just go in and shoot stuff, pickup items, don't let the zomfis bite you then haul a$$ on out of there. Games haven't really changed that much after all these years
