Well the desolate, barren atmosphere is part of the appeal. The other part of it is the exploration, it's a game that's built for you to explore your surroundings and try different paths to figure out where to go.

There's a couple I don't like, some because I simply don't like the genre, but what really stands out are the Mario series and the Donkey Kong series. Both of them have very vague gameplay identities and lack distinct mechanics and tend to feel very repetitive and similar to each other, especially the recent ones (NSMB, 3D Land/3D World, DKCR and Tropical Freeze). They're big contributors to the feeling of Nintendo rehashing.

I for one really disliked the Zelda franchise at first. I still don't like A Link to the Past, but when I got arund to loan OoT from a friend I immediately changed my mind.

This is the best game in the entire Legend of Zelda franchise in my opinion.

Since the post above didn't list what they disliked I'll restart:

Metroid. I love the fact that the protag has always been a strong, independent woman but the desolate, barren atmosphere, generic enemies except bosses, and the pretty sparse story makes the franchise very boring for me...

I would disagree a bit about the theming of Metroid. What I have always liked about the series is the contrast between Samus' rigid, apparently impenetrable metal armor and the outside environment, which is teeming with oozing, crawling life, all of which wants to kill her. It's anything but desolate, it's just all of the intelligent life forms that are dead or hostile. That contrast makes things particularly interesting in games like Prime 3 Corruption and Fusion where that outside life tries to, well, corrupt her. And, yes, some of the enemy designs in Prime 1 were a bit basic (looking at you rainbow space pirates,) but they improved, becoming more complex as the Trilogy progressed.

As for the dislike rebuttal, just refer to Bolt_Strike's post above.

Don't hate me because I'm bnahabulous.

No part of Animal Crossing is particularly appealing to me.
