My brother got me Assassin's Creed IV, but there's one problem...
I have a Basic Wii U and have had a decent amount of space so far. However, Assassin's Creed has an update that claims to take up 1900+ MB of space. I currently only have roughly 1000MB.
I want to know if I can use either an SD Card or USB Flash/Thumb Drive for the update data or if I have to invest in an external hard drive.
I can grab a large SD Card or Flash Drive for cheap compared to the expensive Hard Drives out there.
So... Can I?
Thanks in advance! Have a happy New Year's!
I own a PS1, GBA, GBA SP, Wii (GCN), 360, 3DS, PC (Laptop), Wii U, and PS4.
I used to own a GBC, PS2, and DS Lite
Flashdrives work, but aren't recommended. SD cards won't work for Wii U software. They recommend an AC self powered external HDD, but using one with a USB for power works, as long as it's USB 2.0 or you have a USB 3.0 y-cable for USB 3.0 drives.
I'm using a SanDisk 64GB flash drive to run games like AC4: Black Flag, and yes you can use SD cards with a usb adaptor and you can use both external HDDs and SDDs.
I'm gonna take Nintendo's advice and not use a flash drive due to the amount of data transfer between the system and drive. Besides, hard drives are relatively cheaper data-wise

I went to the store and got a 16GB flash drive for now. In the future, I'll likely upgrade that to a hard drive, but it works for now and that's what matters.
I don't plan on getting anything digital I can get at retail. I just need the space for the occasional demo, the few indie games I get, and save data. Not planning on downloading Tekken or anything.
Thanks again, everyone!

@RicoSuave: For smaller games (VC titles, Child of Light, D&D) and update data, it was perfect. Bigger titles (Game & Wario, Monster Hunter, and every other downloadable retail game) it'd crash.
Got a 320 GB hard drive and I haven't looked back.

@kyuubikid213 Nice, what brand did you end up going with? I know nothing about Hard drives and what not but I want to download citizens of earth while its still on sale. I also did the humble bundle, but I managed to use all my space over the past 2 and half years. (Freaking Metroid Trilogy was 7 gigs!). I may take your route and purchase a small flash drive to tide me over. Does that make sense?
@RicoSuave: Makes sense to me. I have a PDP External Hard Drive. It works for me. I'm no hard drive expert either. Nintendo's got a list of recommended hard drives on their website you can check out if talking with other people online doesn't help you make a decision.
Of course, while a flash drive will be cheaper, it won't get you that far. Just grab a hard drive when you can. I'm not sure if you HAVE to install immediately after purchasing on the eShop...

You aren't given a prompt, but you can cancel a download and do it later. On hard drives I tend to stick with established brands: Seagate, Western Digital, Toshiba, etc. I'd also recommend getting a second drive for backup purposes in case your main drive fails.
