I assume you mean to use with the Wii U? The general recommendation is a USB HD with its own power supply, up to 2 TB (Nintendo has said that this size limit might expand in the future). SSDs and USB-powered HDDs are not recommended.

You can technically connect two 2TB HDDs and move/copy stuff between them, though they can't be used simultaneously as of yet.

I have a 2.5TB external HDD hooked upto my Wii U. Why 2.5TB? Because I got it as a drive to sit in my then new NAS back when HDD prices rose massively. An external 2.5TB drive was actually cheaper than an internal 2TB drive. So that was a stop-gap solution. When the price dropped down again I grabbed a couple of 2TB WD Reds.

The thing is now that I have a NAS and a 750GB portable drive I don't really need storage. So everything else has an SSD and just leaches off the NAS for all of the larger files. The 2.5TB external was basically sitting there on a shelf doing nothing. Now that Mario Kart 8 is coming out soon? 2.5TB drive has a new home.

I have the Zelda-themed Wii U. The styling on the gamepad is especially nifty. I don't currently have an external HDD, but it's not out of the question that I may grab one at a later point. I still have 20+ GB available on the built in 32GB drive, since as a matter of principle I always buy physical copies of games if at all possible.

hmmmm i will be investing in a self powered usb hdd then !
after of a selection of vc games as well as pikmin 3, splinter cell, sm3dworld and WWHD my 32gbs have all been spoken for.
i like to buy games direct from nintendo if they are 1st party games mainly out of respect and support of the company and also because there are now so many great nintendo games i wish i still had from previous consoles but sold on a whim.
and also i do like the ease of not having to stand up to change a disc....... lazy.
@dreamz
i also enjoy the detailing on the gamepad.
did many people go for the basic and a hdd ?
i thought about this bus couldnt resist the WWHD bundle

Premium system, launch version. No USB hard drive, it's needless clutter and I still have storage space left anyway.

Have an SDHC card for Wii mode inside the Wii U though. Wish that Wii U mode also supported SDHC cards.

I really want to get a 2TB Hard Drive before Mario Kart 8 (would rather have faster load times for a game I will not sell), once I get a job this Hard Drive will be number 1 on my list

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

I got a basic unit because I wanted to go download-only for my games and use an external HD. I have a 2TB Seagate "expansion" drive which has an external power supply as my primary drive. I also have a 1TB USB-powered backup drive (you'll need a y-cable for this option) which is either Seagate or Western Digital. I really wish they'd allow multiple drives all the time because doing backups is really awkward at the moment, though it does work.

Premium console, bought at launch. No need for hard drive yet, as I prefer physical disks over download copies.

Dunno how I feel.
