@tebunker..

While I usually agree with this, after near a full year of doom and gloom articles, it's becoming hard to ignore. I have been gaming since the 2600, I turn 30 soon, and while I can't speak for anyone els, the reason I am concerned about this is.. I enjoy gaming. Sales ENTIRELY matter, because they dictate whether or not the people who create my hobby for a living will continue to do so. Games are played for fun, but they aren't made for fun. This is a business. So while I would like to agree with logic like @Cappa's above, that "Hey only 30000 copies were shipped so this is a good thing!" I'm very realistic about the fact that so little copies were shipped in the first place. I can guarantee "Okay folks, we could sell a ton, but let's only ship 30,000 copies" didn't come up in the board room meeting.

So, @faint whether or not you "suspect" Japan has a "downloading culture", 30,000 copies being shipped is NOT a good thing, and this thread is far from meaningless. Just ask all the developers who are choosing NOT to develop for my favorite platform because they don't think it's worth their time when they hear of poor sales.

I want the Wii U succeed, and as i'm not a kid with a "Just play it if it's fun!" Mentality, I realize what needs to happen for it to succeed, and for me to be able to continue enjoying it cuz it's fun.

Again, this is just me, but there was always something that attracted me to this game as well as turned me off, and I just recently realized what it is. It's kind of hard to connect with the randomness going on, on the screen. There are a couple sites that have done in depth looks at the characters- Wonder Red, Wonder Blue, Wonder Yellow, Wonder Black, and Wonder White- And they're all pretty different and cool, if caricature-like, enough so that if they were to start advertising this game with these character's personalities versus random action, I think this title could do well. After learning up on the characters, this is definitely a must-buy for me.

Again, all my opinion, guys.

while I understand your concern you just can't worry about it. If you were gaming since the 2600 that means you were like 2 or 3 when you started gaming. I am 34 and played the 2600 at like 6 years old maybe even younger, I think 4 or 5. Eitherway. All you can do is buy the game. It is the only way you can send the message.

This game may be great, actually I know, for me, it will be, but that doesn't mean it will have the appeal to sell hundreds of thousands of copies, and NCL knows this and only shipped a reported 30k in Japan, so the game will need to sell in the EU and NA. It isn't a statement on gaming in general or how Nintendo is doing, but the fact that W101 is a niche title, on a niche system, even in Japan. So it is a tough sell. Also, we have no idea how digital downloads are doing there either. No way to tell if the majority of Japanese WiiU owners DL games. So I wouldn't worry about your hobby going anywhere. I would be more worried about the Homogenization of gaming, and the AAA or Indie separation of development. The only way to fight that is to support games like W101 and encourage others to support it as well.

@tebunker I think you misunderstood me. I think this game will soar in the West. My point is the thread is meaningless because it all hinges on Japanese sales. CoD sells poorly in Japan and still hits 10 million. Japan is not god. I will see you on the 101 miiverse if you put your money where your mouth is.

My replies had nothing to do with you and was more aimed at Letsgoretro I firmly believe the west will buy more of this title, but I won't sweat it either way, I am getting the game, I have it preordered which I rarely do, and I will enjoy it immensely. I don't care if it sells 1 unit or 30k units in Japan, Us and UK. I will play it knowing that it appeals to me.

Faint, again, this is very relevant. We can only go off the numbers we have, which so far is only Japan. Of course some titles sell better in some regions then others, but often one is a good indicator of another. Japan is an important territory for Nintendo, and this is a quirky, colorful cartoon-like game. This is much more geared towards the Japanese audience than the West.

Well given Pikmin 3 sold "only" 95k in its first week I don't think it's worth reading too much into a new IP only getting 30k units shipped. I don't know what people were expecting really.... although I think this is probably just another excuse to create a doom thread

Wii Fit U. A game that screams to me "My creators don't realize my once in a lifetime craze is over". I mean, really, are the casuals that bought that REALLY sitting around waiting for another?

I don't know about that, but hardcore me is waiting for another, yes. You are making too many assumptions.

Can't say too much because I haven't played the game, so I'll just make one point.

I never expected The Wonderful 101 to move copies in Japan. It's based on retro superhero mythos, the campy kind with absolutely no sense of subtlety that all of us recognise as childish but for some reason still adore. That kind of hyperactive in-your-face attitude seems like something which would appeal much more to Western audiences.

always thought I'd change to Gyarados after I turned 20 but hey, this is more fitting I guess. (also somebody registered under the original Magikarp name and I can't get back to it anymore orz)

Honestly if a new Nintendo IP like this sells those 30K quickly for Wii U this early on in Japan, I'd almost consider that a success. The game basically exists to make Platinum and Nintendo close rather than to be some major commercial success anyway. That's what Bayonetta's for.

Everybody knew this wasn't going to sell. You could see it 2 months ago in the pre orders lists of Amazon. Nintendo never thought it would sell much either. However, games like Zelda will sell. There's really nothing to do with each.

I want this game to do well, but at the same time you can't have really expected it to be a huge hit. It looks like a pretty niche title to be honest, and aside from those who have been following it for a while, i'm not sure how many people it's going to attract. At least it worked on strengthening Platinum and Nintendo's relationship.

Look at it on the bright side though, regardless of whether or not it sells well, we still get to play and awesome game.

Apparently it didn't make it into the Japanese top 20 this week.

Media Create: 5,258 copies of #TW101 #WiiU were sold in Japan its opening week. Ouch.

You have to fear those guys at Platinum will just give up making games. I haven't played Wonderful 101 to make my own judgement, but they have made some amazing games that have completely flopped in terms of sales, and a couple of times now it's led to the closure of their studio.

Edit: Well the good news is it did make the top 20. It in fact got to number 14 (although it's sales wouldn't have even got top 20 last week, so this was a slow week overall). The bad news is the 5k figure is true.
