You know what? Twilight Princess is awesome. I'm convinced by now that all of its supposed flaws are just strengths that other people misunderstand.
Take for example Hyrule Field - Eldin. Big, flat, not much to do but ride around on your horse and kill bulblins. But just look up; from there you can see all of Hyrule! Snowpeak, Hyrule Castle, Death Mountain, Zora's River—it's all there. Just an amazing place.
And then the much-belittled Twilight. Common complaints include feeling lost, confused, and the sequences taking a long time as a result. Well consider Zelda for a moment. What is the core gameplay loop of Zelda? Entering a dungeon, feeling confused by the puzzles and impotent in your inability to beat them, eking a path through to the mini boss and gaining the dungeon's item—gaining the power of agency.
Now back to the Twilight; you enter, feel confused by the strange landscape and impotent due to the lack of bipedal legs and opposable thumbs, and eking your path through to clear away the Twilight, thus empowering you to solve the region's challenges.
The Twilight is Zelda.
A game as grand as Twilight Princess starts to become meaningless if always playing the same one, epic note. The Twilight sections provide an essential contrast to the high points of the game. They are a tool for contrast, not just gameplay-wise, but also tonally. When in the Twilight Link is either fearful for others or feared by others. He becomes an outsider due to their fearful scorn. This is a perfect and crucial foil to the game's moments of triumph.
You know with all this talk about specs and so on I should probably point this out. Not many things choke me up.... but if I put this on my headphones? It's an emotional rollercoaster. Especially when the Hyrule Field theme kicks in.
Please Nintendo, remake this game. Full orchestral soundtrack, everything cleaned up. Just let me dive into it.
edit: To be fair, the same is arguably true for most Zelda games. But still
About ALBW's music, let's remember Lorule is not the Dark World.
The Dark World a land twisted by the evil intentions of Ganon, it was litereally his own private "hell" (and then other people joined him in hopes of getting the golden power themselves). Lorule, while pretty much a copy-paste in design, is meant to be a tragic alternate universe where the destruction of their triforce left the place broken and in a decaying status. It's still perceived as a bit more "evil" than Hyrule, but for different reasons.
I guess the songs are a bit different to reflect those different ideas.
I believe Lorule was the Sacred Realm, but corrupted by Ganon's evil, as you said. It'd be like a dark, twisted version of the Sacred Real segments of TP. Which would be so awesome to see

I don't believe that due to the Triforce, Lorule had it's own different Triforce which was destroyed (which resulted in that world's twistedness and not Ganon) where as the Sacred Realm is referred to as a holy place where Hyrule's Triforce resides so an alternate universe seems more likely.
Lorule was a reflection of Hyrule, like the flip of a coin. I figured the Dark World was Ganon's corrupted vision of Hyrule. The fact that they are identical makes sense in terms of their relation to Hyrule but is otherwise a coincidence. As for the development itself, it allowed Nintendo to use existing world design, and could exploit the success and familiarity of A Link to the Past.
@Blast Twilight Princess does have the best combat. I don't think Nintendo ever really got enough credit for the large number of changes they made compared to Wind Waker's combat system. Link's movement is so fluid; the way he sidesteps and somersaults is brilliant. When you kill one enemy it automatically targets the next with none of the targeting confusion in earlier titles. It's very intuitive. I also like that you can swing the sword as Link moves. The hidden moves get some flack for making the game even easier but I thought they were fun to use. The helm splitter was awesome, especially in Temple of Time!
@arronishere: ahhh I'm an idiot. I meant to write the dark world, not lorule. Yeah Lorule was it's own thing. The dark world is what was the sacred realm defiled if I remember right. My bad
@mookysam: I agree that TP's combat is pretty good, I only wish that the animations looked as fluid as Wind Waker's animations. Link in TP looks a little static when he's jumping and rolling sideways.
I'm sure Nintendo will have something if Reggie's there again.
I just hope that "something" is able to be taken seriously, unlike their Cranky Kong thing two years back. So no showing Federation Force, Nintendo. Stick to Zelda U, Starfox, or even XBX (since it's a day before release)
And what exactly are the sacred realm segments of TP? When you train with the golden wolf?
As DarthNocturnal mentioned, I always considered these as either some sort of pocket dimension, or else visions that Link is seeing within his own mind.

Some random dude on Nintendo Life.
Toriel left for a while, so Freaky Fred took over her place!
Not changing this part of the signature until Nintendo announces Super Mario Sunshine 2.
