Well, yeah, cleaning it up is clearly something they need to do. But they haven't really "remade" it, as in rearranging it or re-recording it again with real instruments.

I found a website that compiles a list of devices and their GPU floating point performance. Based on that here's a list of 9 consoles sorted by the amount of a leap they were from their predecessor:

#1 - Gamecube
#2 - PS3
#3 - Wii U
#4 - PS Vita
#5 - 360
#6 - PS4
#7 - 3DS
#8 - XBOne
#9 - Wii

If we're going to be fair then the Wii U is actually more than keeping up with Moore's law. The Wii U is far more than just the Wii of this generation in the same way that the Gamecube and the PS3 were quite a leap. On the other end of the spectrum, well down the pack, the Wii. The one time that there wasn't much of a spec bump.

You got the source for that? One problem with that measure is that it doesn't take into account the different lengths of generations. The gamecube only having a 5 year life, whereas the Xbox 360 had 8 years (so the Xbox one almost definitely fails the test)
I don't know about the flops but just looking at the CPU clock speed, the Wii was only about twice the Gamecube. In a 5 year gap, Moore's Law says you should get about a 6x increase.

You're right, I didn't take into account the number of years but I didn't want to go and enter all of the release dates into a spreadsheet. Plus my point was more that Nintendo don't "ignore" Moore's law and that they certainly didn't for the Wii U. I didn't want to quantify how much of a performance boost each console had because GFLOPs is a rough measure. But I think it's fair to say that the Gamecube, PS3, Wii U and Vita all exceeded the boost that they would have gotten from just Moore's Law. The Wii fell short, the rest were more or less in-line with expectations.

File select songs don't count

Anyway, I'm not sure if the other one is actually remade, but it does sound a bit nicer.

@Freeon-Leon: I think it depends on what emotion you're going for. Dark World theme, for me, was a grand adventure into a strange place. Instruments were full, notes were drawn out to the end of the phrase. They used pseudo-strings and brass instruments with an oboe in the B section. Lorule theme? Much more of a person going through maybe a mysterious woods. Phrasing was cut off on one beat, instruments that played melody was by one violin. It was less of a grand expedition, for me. Again, I am willing to admit my bias, but trying to see this objectively, it feels weak.

@Morpheel: Ok, the difference in these is even more noticeable.

This and this.

Now that I'm hearing this, I come to think how awesome it will be when we get a HD remake of Ocarina of Time. Pure epicness.

Well now, in that one the ocarina does sound like a real instrument.

I guess the soundtrack is still so identical I failed to notice it during gameplay.

So well, maybe the can improve TP's soundtrack a bit too. I guess it's just the portables games' music they don't care enough about.

@Freeon-Leon: That may have to do with the Wii U having better sounds installed into it; the MIDI files are probably exactly the same, and I'm not sure how much work was put into it. Sounds way better, though. I had no idea there was such an upgrade, not having played the original.

@Haiassai: Those are valid points, though I think Lorule's Theme fits the pacing of ALBW. Also, the scale of both games are different because of the historical context. ALttP was like this huge game that no one had ever done before, the world was so vast and the OST reflected that pretty nicely. While in ALBW things were a bit different; it is a big world, but it's not as big when compared to other (Zelda) games. But I'm maybe grasping at straws here.

@Nicolai: No, they did re-record some songs. The strings in Outset Island sound very differently.

About ALBW's music, let's remember Lorule is not the Dark World.

The Dark World a land twisted by the evil intentions of Ganon, it was litereally his own private "hell" (and then other people joined him in hopes of getting the golden power themselves). Lorule, while pretty much a copy-paste in design, is meant to be a tragic alternate universe where the destruction of their triforce left the place broken and in a decaying status. It's still perceived as a bit more "evil" than Hyrule, but for different reasons.

I guess the songs are a bit different to reflect those different ideas.

@Morpheel: I can dig that. Ugh... I was just so confused by that game. I don't get how it works. It's a parallel game... takes place 100 years after ALttP.. but uses a copy and paste design... and all the temples are the same... and same items are in the same places... but it's in the future... and what?

That said, I like your and @Freeon-Leon 's reasoning. (y)

@Nicolai: Yeah, I don't think they're real either. I mean, it seems Nintendo have re-recorded the songs as in they now have better digital instruments.

You know, more and more I'm finding that I'm super excited to see certain things get the HD treatment. Perhaps the most wanting asset in the whole game is the curtain of twilight itself. A clearer effect / texture would make this scene in particular much cooler (a feat in and of itself):

...I wonder if they'll include Link's Crossbow Training HD as well?

The way I see it there are three main technical advances since Twilight Princess launched:

1. The disk size has increased from 1.5GB to 25GB (~16x)
2. The available memory has gone from 43MB to 2GB (~46x)
3. The available video output has gone from 480p to 1080p (~6x)

I'd assume that when they were making Twilight Princess they had to scale back their ambition so they could fit it on that hardware. Things like the midi soundtrack rather than a fully orchestrated one which they gave lame excuses for. Really that stuff was as it was because of the limited disk space on the platform they developed it for. Or the resolution of the textures where they didn't bother pushing it because RAM was precious, storage was precious and at 480p nobody was going to really notice it anyway. So it was held back by the hardware.

For a game the scale of Twilight Princess those limits don't exist anymore. Which is why I want a remake

You know what? Twilight Princess has the best minigames.

I hope we get an additional sumo and diving mini game at Death Mountain and Zora's Domain respectively. There mechanics are already in the game, they'd just have to come up with some challenges. Iron boots are MVP.

Guys, guys... You can deflect arrows with your sword in Twilight Princess.

Like a freakin' Jedi.

Best Zelda game.
