So the PS4 is doing so well because it can play games on last-gen and current gen the best? I don't get that. If I have a machine (360 or PS3) that can play the games I want, why upgrade to a new machine (PS4) just for a small increase in performance?
I get there are a few exclusives people may want but I haven't seen a Killer App for PS4. So I don't understand why the PS4 is selling so well. Obviously this gen is unique and not playing out like any other generation (but I guess each gen was unique)
Here's your killer app.
WAT!

Nintendo went in with a console not to par with the rest of the industry and let their first year really go to waste. Microsoft went a bit underpowered and ended up with a bigger price point. Many expected the one and PS4 to be reverse of each other.

How exactly did they shoot themselves in the foot?
Nintendo- Swung and missed with their hardware, chose a different architecture and made it harder to port games over to the Wii U(despite 3rd part games not selling well on their platform), dropped the ball on marketing, no killer app for the gamepad, underestimated HD development which led to droughts, basically no 3rd party support which takes away a lot of the value in a console
MS - #dealwithit, $500 for a console that has weaker specs than their competitor, still have pay-walls for stuff you can do for free on other devices, all the controversy that surrounded the Xbox division leading up to and during E3.
How else do you explain the Xbone not selling as well as the PS4 despite having more notable games on shelves and the PS3 still having more notable software being released on it at this point? And why is the Wii U literally bombing in all regions right now?
@shingi_70
Not everyone cares about inFamous, though. I can say Mario 3D World, Game & Wario, Art Academy, etc. are all "killer" apps, but that doesn't mean you're going to agree with me.

Ya, but alot of people also still realize that developers and companies are still trying to figure out how to handle 8th gen. People aren't worried about the short term, as much as the long term, so PS4 getting ACIV in 1080p isn't that big of a deal, because they're still figuring things out.
Xbox One can run ACIV in 1080p. It's just a matter of figuring out how.
The average consumer will pick the product that is producing the best results currently ie the PS4 this could very well change in the future but right now thats just the way it is.

That doesn't preclude it from being a killer app does it? I know many a people who dislikes say halo but wouldn't agrue that its usually a killer app.
Out of the games mention only Mario would be considered a killer app or system seller.

I am not sure about that. inFamous was never that big of a series. The demo I saw at E3 wasn't very impressive either. Do we know what are the sales numbers for Second Son? inFamous sold about 2.7 mill and inFamous 2 was about 1.6 mill. Decent numbers but not as close to the system launch as Second Son. Does the rest of the gaming industry see this as the Killer App for PS4? Am I the only one that doesn't see how this is a Killer App?
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...
@MAN1AC
The question is whether any of that effects the bottom line, though. Nintendo probably has no reason to give Wii U a "in your face" market campaign, hence, why there isn't one. We're past Microsoft's controversy. Developers are still figuring out hardware.
People expect things to improve throughout the course of these console's lifespans.
If ACIV being 1080p is exciting for you, then great.
Strange, isn't it? Honestly for all game consoles, it's surprising how much can be sold purely on potential.
The media has decided the PS4 is 'the winner'. They may say that 'it's too early to say', but they've bashed fans over the head with the Wii U drought and processor inferiority; Xbone's early policies, pricing, and inability to do 1080p, and that Sony have really nice TV ads with references to games that could be coming soon, even though they haven't been announced or even made in 10 years. I'm not a Microsoft fan, but I've noticed how negative the media has been to the big black VCR box, similarly to the way they've been to the Wii U.
Most consumers are really scared they're going to buy the 'loser' console, so they do what IGN and CVG tell them to do.
About 1080p, i find it funny because people used to call pc gamers graphic jerks when they talked about fps or resolutions, but now if you look on internet all that matters are graphics.
Also its funny because people say 1080p/60fps is going to be easy on ps4 and so fare there's 0 games like that (i think infamous is 1080p/30 fps isnt it) plus most of ps4 games have framerate problems, and imo fps > resolution.
Has anyone seen a framerate dip in a Nintendo game? i haven't.
I suppose rating 'fun' or enjoyment' is a subjective thing, whereas numbers can be made to sound like fact. You can say a PS4 is 2.378 times better than an Xbone because it can produce that many more polygons- (You can see I know a lot about processing power). How do you prove what is the best game between Titanfall, Infamous SS, and Mario 3d World when they aren't anything alike? I think the modern world needs to be able to quantify everything and big is best.
Isn't it obvious that Falco Lombardi is actually a parrot?
You're right. Not everyone values a specific game as much as the next person. What ppl really care about is having a steady stream of games and a variety to choose from...which is why this thread was made in the 1st place.
....and that's why my PS4 is next to my television and my Wii U is hibernating in the closet until May 30th.

Putting it in the closet seems pretty pointless. Is your entertainment center really that cluttered? You really can't find anything to play?

What games are you playing on your PS4? What games are you not playing on your Wii U? (What I mean is which of the recent big titles did you not pick up)

Why buy a bigger TV or a newer phone? Most people aren't doing it for new features: they're doing it because it offers them something better of what they already have.
EDIT: and when I say newer phone, I mean when upgrading after 2 years, not after 6.

While that is true, replacing your TV doesn't stop you from watching old shows or movies. Replacing your phone (if you keep the same OS) doesn't stop you from keeping your old games. Replacing your Playstation means your PS3 library is gone. Keeping your old system and new system requires a lot of space, input slots, and controllers laying around. It is a different type of replacement than phones or TV.

No one said replace a lot of people who upgrade keep their old consoles.

I'm playing Infamous: Second Son right now and I'll be picking up Mercanary Kings on April 1st. DKC: Tropical Freeze was my last Wii U purchase. As a Wii U launch customer, I've picked up every major Nintendo retail release for the system baring some of the minor Eshop only titles like Dr. Luigi.
