I could see him making a cameo simply because he's so popular here in NOA. I wouldn't mind him having a trophy or even an assist trophy simply because he's one of the few people keeping nintendo relevant these days aside from Shiggy and Sakurai.

Nah. I don't really see the casuals being too mean about it. I have seen competitive players bully casuals over not taking the game seriously, though. That was pretty funny.
"For Fun" should say "For Jerks!" Since casual players alwas bully us competitive players.
I swear that's almost true. I was playing brawl online and everyone was ganging upon on me. When I died every taunted. A Mario player did his longest taunt right next to another player with a home run bat! anyways jokes on them I won.

In all honesty, I really dislike the competitive scene of Smash. Not necessarily the people because there are some jerks, yeah but there are jerks in the casual audience too. My beef with the whole "competitive" scene is that it takes away what makes Smash Bros fun. It just strips away anything unique about it.
A radically different stage where there are several stage hazards or traditional KO's are not possible? Banned.
A variety of different items that make the game fun and unique from other fighters? Banned.
Meta Knight? Banned
Smash Balls? The item that makes Brawl stand out and really fun to play? Banned
Why is the competitive scene so stingy with what they do and don't allow? If you look at the listing for all the stages in Brawl, you'll be hard pressed to find anything that's not banned. It just bewilders me that some people actually prefer to play on a boring flat surface with no items and don't allow certain characters. It just takes out everything that makes Smash unique and fun. Like if you're going to remove all of that, why even bother playing Smash Bros? A match without items, on final destination is just pointless to me. Items, stage hazards and every single character on the roster are the very core of what Smash Bros is.
I don't intend any offense to anyone. If you enjoy playing like that then more power to you, but I honestly think you're taking away what makes Smash Bros, Smash Bros.

if they did not ban these things there would be completely random things happening. you want to rely on skill, not luck to win a tournament.
