I don't see the point in voice chat. I've seen people argue that it's for "strategy" but what strategy is there really to Splatoon? What makes this game great is that it's really easy for anyone to pick up and play as your main objective is to just shoot everything in ink. If there's something not covered in your teams ink, shoot it. That's all you need to do.
Not to mention you don't really need voicechat to alert someone that you need help, as you can clearly see it on the game pad. You see a teammate near an enemy? Chances are they're trying to kill each other. So just tap your teammate and you'll super jump directly to them to help.
TBH the only time I looked at the gamepad was when I was respawning or I couldn't see an area on the telly that needs covering in ink.
By the end of the testfire, I was looking at my GamePad more. The GamePad gives a lot of information and not looking at it will be the downfall of most teams.

Okay: I personally think the gamepad does a good job of helping the player strategize on his own. It's a passive way of having the player communicate and read their teammates. And yes, even if people direct others with voice chat does not mean others will follow. However, the more options, the better. I'm more of an auditory learner than a visual, and having a screen that I have to go back and forth is not easy for me to adapt to. Granted, I will because that's what Nintendo wants me to do, but they are making this less accessible for gamers who don't strategize in that way. If they are willing to accomodate colorblind individuals and those who do not like gyro controls... this should've been placed in.
The map should be put on the screen. It's really annoying to look down, especially in this game. And if no voice chat, they should add more pings, rather than just those silly taunts that are useless. "Need help!" being one of them they should put
Please, stop debating about Voice Chat. It IS essential for a (professional) strategic game with friends but not needed for a funny occasional game with strangers.
In the first case I will use my phone or skype with my friends and in the second case I am glad not to listen to other players.
It would be practical to have an option for Voice Chat with friends but Nintendo is family friendly and won't do it. So deal with it.

To add to that, I think if Ninty is so adamant about having no voice chat, they should create beacons for teammates suggest where to go. If Age of Empires II had it, Splatoon should incorporate it as well.

I've gone back on my word about getting involved, so I personally apologise for that. Though I think your word choice for "professional" is better under "strategic," and that's what I get the most out of games.

Thanks. If you and I want to play together, it would be not problem to exchange skype accounts and have a voice while playing.
I think that in terms of people who are doing more shooting than territory painting levelling might fix that? I can't imagine people will be levelling up very quickly if they aren't trying to complete the main objectives and working with their team towards victory so you'd just leave them behind, no?

"Need help" - with what? Painting the floor? I never was in a match where I had trouble finding floor areas to paint.

The mechanics are trying to push people away from killing and closer to holding ground. People will ignore those mechanics at first but as they continue to play they will learn the meta and play the game correctly. We just need the community to catch up.

Some random dude on Nintendo Life.
Toriel left for a while, so Freaky Fred took over her place!
Not changing this part of the signature until Nintendo announces Super Mario Sunshine 2.

Needing help isn't really about covering paint (you can see all the paint on the gamepad). I think the "need help" ping is helpful if you're facing a group alone. Also, how about if you're using the Splat Charger? It's terrible at covering ink compared to the other weapons, so having a "Come Here!!" option is helpful if there's a big territory that needs to be covered. Rollers and shooters can fly over to you to help cover the map in ink.

Splatoon
Super Smash Bros. Wii U & 3DS + All DLC
Mario Kart 8 + All DLC
Mario Golf: World Tour + All DLC
Mario Kart 7
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
It seems like the single player might be fairly large. Review codes are apparently being sent out now, and the reviewers are allowed to talk about the first 3 worlds in single player.

Haha are you really trying to shoot down that too? Boy oh boy...
This is probably the one game I payed least attention to as far as news goes, because eh I really didn't think I'd like. But man I played the demo, and it has me hyped beyond believe, and considering I don't even like shooters that's incredible. Has Nintendo said yet if there will be an option to play with friends?

There will be. Also later (through free DLC) there will be a way to do a 4 friends vs 4 friends.

for some reason...I want a trench warfare type mode ala WW1. Straight up epic arena/coliseum style 8v8. each start at one end no obstacles. a moshpit of colors clashing.

Wouldn't that give snipers a crazy advantage?
