Can't you level up and get points from the solo mode though?

No, single player is a stand-alone thing in every sense (the gear is completely separate in single player as well).

From the Splatoon Direct: "Points are awarded for performance in a match. And points are currency for use in-game. That's not all pupils: points also determines how fast you level up."

I never once felt the need for voice chat, because the gamepad shows you everything you need to see to strategize.

TBH I don't even feel the gamepad is needed to strategize as the matches are too short. The main use I'd see in voice chat is just tell people on my team to stop following and trying to paint the same area which could as easily be done with having common sense which I'm sure the ranked battle could eliminate.

I'm sure that if people played the demo, they'd see it really isn't needed. Plus the Gamepad is a very good point too. It's just 3 minutes so again, voice chat not really needed. The only reason I think voice chat might be optional is in the other 2 modes they announced. The one with the territory and the capture the flag one.

lol, I was really not missing the voice chat. It might change when I play the full version of the game or with the team oriented plays, but for this demo I didn’t miss any of that. I think this is just confirmation bias: people thought it might need voice chat, have only the basic shooter as point of reference, start talking about voice chat and then don’t play a demo to see what the game is like but actually start testing whether or not they could use voice chat.

I loved the demo. It really surprised me in terms of potential depth. And it was lots of fun, obviously. But the scope of this demo did nothing in terms of player chat or communication between us as players. Ask me when clans start forming, ranked battling in tournaments are here, or a game mode is terribly dependant on team play to even work, but otherwise I don’t know if I’d miss it, to be honest. I’m sceptical as to whether or not I’d want to hear the other players anyway.

The article is correct that when the August update comes, sharing strategies via chat could be of importance.

For Turf War against constantly shuffled randoms in pretty chaotic short matches, no.

I do agree that Turf War can do without voice chat due to the short match length but it would be advantageous to offer it in the more strategic modes.

It's strange that the game's director complains about the negativity of an online game. The "angry, cursing 12-year-old" stereotype is pretty much gone in my experience. I can't speak for the PS4 community, but when I play Call of Duty on Xbox One it is a silent affair. You'll see that the lobby is full of people with headsets connected but they're all in their own private chat. I don't see any reason why there couldn't be a private chat application for Wii U...

edit: Also, is there any advantage to pre-loading the game from the eshop (aside from getting to play it instantly)? Usually companies offer some sort of incentive DLC for pre-loading; not sure if Nintendo has any special offers going on or not.

Well...I'd argue that we don't need voice chat. Call of Duty Black Ops II has voice chat and not once, NOT ONCE, has it ever been used in a way conducive to the game in any match I've been in. I've tried to use it to warn my teammates about enemies flanking us or try and organize an attack, but it never mattered. More often it's kids blabbering about nonsense, guys hitting on female players, some dude with music blaring, and background noise of a family dinner.

Assassin's Creed's voice chat is built into the GamePad and no one uses that either...and those game modes are usually DEPENDENT on teamwork to win it. But nope. Nothing aside from occasional friendly conversation.

While I only played one of the Testfire sessions, I didn't feel that having voice chat was absolutely necessary.

I own a PS1, GBA, GBA SP, Wii (GCN), 360, 3DS, PC (Laptop), Wii U, and PS4.

I will agree with the those scenarios you've listed. MH3U had this one irritating kid and and I got sick of it. Luckily, all I had to do was cut the speaker on the gamepad and was instantly happy. If nothing else, VC for friends only because usually when you friend somebody and you plan on playing with them often, you have something in common with them or really enjoyed playing with them and find it beneficial to talk to them.

i was never going to reply to you ever again but. You're acting like everyone's experienced what you experienced like this "I didn't feel that having voice chat was absolutely necessary" Yeah you didn't feel the need for it,but what about the other's? Nah screw them right? Here's another thing "NOT ONCE, has it ever been used in a way conducive to the game in any match I've been in" Yeah you been in there's others who actually used voice chat in COD to help them win. And voice chat is an option that if you don't want to use it, fine mute everyone. But the other's who wanted to actually use voice chat they got screwed in the long run. Is not fair they went the lazy route and took it out cause they don't know what a mute button is.

No such offers, but if you downloaded the Testfire Demo, you'll get 10% off the eShop price in the NoE eShop. Preloading is just to play the game faster.

Well unfortunately I'm dealing with NoA and they haven't been all that generous as of late. (Although 10% isn't even that much, tbh. That would just cover the tax here.)

I'll probably wind up going with gamestop for the Smash DLC.

I say it needs voice chat, because so many times I wanted to tell people "Go to that area", "Don't follow me, we can cover more ground if we split up" "I need you to watch my back while I'm painting the enemy base", "This is not a shooter, this is a turf war", "Stop painting on the walls, they don't count" The gamepad does not show you everything you need to strategize, it just shows you who's team paint is on which area.

I think it's just common sense for voice chat to be there between friends. Honestly, people that advocate for less features in a game just because they personally would not use them (just like the silly developer), are not people I would concern myself with.

But aside from that, because it's never going to happen, all I would ask Nintendo to reasonably change is to put the map on screen. It's really annoying to have to look down at the gamepad, especially in a game as fast faced as this one. It's the same issue MK8 had at launch.

I haven't played Splatoon but doesn't voice chat depend on the context of the game. Typically when I'm playing its usually with friends in a private setting, which is usually how it goes when i'm playing Halo just me and some friends talking and calling out where things are on the map. Destiny is a game where during the PVP i never use the voice chat but when doing a strike or a Raid its used fairly often.

But honestly Voice Chat should be included its not really needed that much. When I was playing the Halo 5 beta I noticed not many people used voice chat when playing randoms, however 343 put things into the games to compensate for that like the sparten voices calling out things in gameplay and markers for where certian things are spawning.

WAT!

I think it's less that and more people sick of people complaining about trivial missing "features". Like the people who complain that the Wii U lacks Blu-Ray and DVD playback. Sure it'd be cool if it had it but the fact that it doesn't doesn't really matter. For a unique game that's pushing boundaries? The checklist critiques grate a bit. The fact that the game isn't simply going down the list and ticking boxes is part of the appeal. I agree that it'd be cool to have voice-chat between friends but it's not really necessary for the game itself.

Well the strategy in Splatoon from the two hours I played it was mostly "paint the areas that aren't your colour". Which the map shows. So at least I knew exactly what I should be doing. And for sure it's a team-based game but if someone is playing the game wrong? It's their loss. Winning as a team is important but at the end of the day you're in there for the currency. Currency to buy better gear so you can do better in the game. If your team-mates suck? More currency for you!

I don't see the point in voice chat. I've seen people argue that it's for "strategy" but what strategy is there really to Splatoon? What makes this game great is that it's really easy for anyone to pick up and play as your main objective is to just shoot everything in ink. If there's something not covered in your teams ink, shoot it. That's all you need to do.

Not to mention you don't really need voicechat to alert someone that you need help, as you can clearly see it on the game pad. You see a teammate near an enemy? Chances are they're trying to kill each other. So just tap your teammate and you'll super jump directly to them to help.

TBH the only time I looked at the gamepad was when I was respawning or I couldn't see an area on the telly that needs covering in ink.
