What exactly would voice chat add?

besides an annoyance, people for some reason want to tell other people where to paint. i'm on team no voice chat.

On another note: has there been an explanation as to why the Euro version is so much cheaper than the NA game? Even with currency conversion, the EU price is substantially cheaper.

Count me in as one of the many who has Splatoon withdraw. Had a blast with the game and was happy to see the match making being very quick like Mario Kart 8.

My opinion on the demo: it's alright.

Fun game, but I got bored rather quickly. Contrary to whatever the developers said, I feel like I would have had so much more fun if I could actually communicate with people. The guns were okay, sans the sniper, which I don't like since it hardly acts like a sniper. It doesn't reach very far. Not worth $60 in my eyes.

You were bored with a fraction of the game. Plenty more weapons to choose from in the full game. Watch the Splatoon direct for all of the info.

He was bored with the gameplay of the 4vs4 online multiplayer which makes up the main chunk of the game. If he didn't enjoy the demo, regardless of what other weapons were missing, chances are good he wouldn't enjoy the full game either.

Thank you for that. I wouldn't say I wouldn't enjoy it. It's just, I get bored of it quickly. I couldn't last the single hour, I just stopped after half an hour

I really don't see why nintendo couldn't have thrown in a 2 player split screen mode. (that isn't battle dojo) I'm not saying 4 player, but 2 player at least. Why can't player 2 just use the pro controller, and pull up a map by pressing minus?

Agree. Not enough local lan options for multi-player with family. Now if they made a 3ds version and you could use your 3ds screens, and your wiiu game pad, plus the tv sceeen, I would be all about it.

So, $40 local coop DLC? Greaaat idea.

$40 for a portable version of the game, that just happens to enable local play. The problem you have with split screen multiplayer is that if one person got to use the tablet and three people did not, the ones without the gamepad would not be able to use the jump to team mate feature, or know where on the map needs ink.

Yes, players without the gamepad would be at a disadvantage, but that's better than nothing right? Plus like I said, they could bring up a map by pressing minus, and then select where they want to jump to.

Exactly, you just move a cursor over the map with one of the sticks. It's not rocket science. If Splatoon will have local multiplayer Nintendo should just patch in support for pro controllers and 2-4 splitscreen options. If they wanted to have 3DS controller support then they should just release a companion app on the 3DS.

Know this; Splatoon won't run on 3DS, it's far more demanding than that. The only way it could work is if Nintendo made a stripped-down port (why? Nintendo's first party 3DS online is awful.) The 3DS controller option would have to use the Wii U to stream essentially a splitscreen to the 3DS.

That's super not going to happen, so pro controller splitscreen would be more realistic and better.

I really hope that Splatoon's reviews shock NIntendo into putting voice chat in their games more often.

Reviews who would claim that voice chat is of any practical use in the 2-player Turf War matches are just trolling. Voice chat for the modes available in the August update would probably be of use, but that can't be reviewed at launch.

You mean 8-player? I've seen a lot of impressions videos that say the lack of VC really hurts.

Also, just to be clear, I don't think Splatoon will get low scores, just that many reviews will complain about VC

It's very responsible of them to not put voice chat in a Pegi 7 game. They can control kids' online experience better. Bravo I say.

The local multiplayer mode isn't Turf War. It's about popping balloons.

So, I played for 2 hours yesterday and it was as I had expected it to be: tons of fun. The motion controls felt awkward at first, but once I got used to it I couldn't go back. Like a lot of people in here, I went from the "Roller is op!!!" view to the "dang, this thing has no chance if you have some height and/or kite it". My favorite weapons were definitely the Splatter and the Splatter Jr.. I couldn't really get into the charge rifle, since it feels so slow and the lack of a range indicator didn't help either.

The two tracks were both awesome and it's really easy to memorize the outlay of the maps since they are symmetric. The OST was pretty good aswell. The ability to swim through ink is also amazing. It feels really natural and fluid and opens up new paths and tactics. The only thing I really hate is the fact that Nintendo will keep two maps in a rotation of 4 hours. That's just bs. It's the first game I've seen doing this and I hope they change it.

As to the lack of voice chat: I didn't care about voice chat before and after playing 2 hours of Splatoon I care even less. The matches are rather short and the objective is very clear. There is not really a need for further communication. All you need to know is displayed on the gamepad's map. If there had been voice chat, I would have told people something like this: "stop following me". This could easily be told with a quick message like "Spread out!", so again no need for voice chat imo. I do think there should be some form of voice chat with friends; and not just in Splatoon. This should be feature in every game, like some sort of Teamspeak or Skype. I guess this is due to hardware limitations though.

Apparently you can also shoot with the Splat Charger without charging, you won't get as far however. I'll definitely need to try this when the game comes out.

I wouldn't say that the lack of voice chat is due to hardware limitations (heck the original Xbox had voice chat!)

It's more due to the face that Nintendo is trying to be family friendly, and if you've every played a modern shooter you'd noticed that the language used online is far from family friendly.

Honestly though, I due agree that the game is simple enough where voice chat isn't needed.

Yeah, I think I phrased that wrong. I'm 100% certain that Splatoon could have easily had voice chat inbuild. If games from a decade ago had one, this shouldn't be a problem at all in terms of hardware. I meant some sort of external program though. Like running a voice chat program while playing Splatoon. Let's call it WiiU chat for the sake of it. You'd be running WiiU chat in the background to talk to your friends, while playing Splatoon with them. Hence my comparison to Skype and Teamspeak which are both programs that are running in the background and are not in build in a game.

That's actually my biggest problem: from the demo only, the game is too simple. I've seen too many fights where people are doing their own thing rather than working as a team to cover the territory. Another issue is that people who have guns focus a lot of their attention on shooting.

The best games I've seen are where teams rally up and push the enemy toward their base. It's evident that these teams (which are random) all have the same mindset and are rather skilled. But for those who aren't on the same wavelength, coordination would help so much more—it would def make the game more interesting and less simple.

During the demo, I usually covered most of the area on my team, my best weapon being Splattershot Jr. When I slowed down on the second testfire(i was really tired), i more attacked the other team to slow their progress and repainted stolen turf, but i barely covered anything. The focus is definitely less on attacking but more avoiding. I like the ranked modes cause they focus on covering a certain area and then protecting it.

Can you customize your loadout in Splatoon? Can you use a paint roller a bubbler and a inkzooka for example? Or does every weapon have a preset secondary and special weapon?

A couple quwstions;

-Can you swim under a roller and pop up behind them?

-Are there any more than 4 weapons + subs? I don't care about vague future content promises, just what's actually there.

The roller puts down paint so it would be like if someone shot at where you are in squid form. (You would take damage and go out of squid form, although since it's a roller it is an instant kill)
There are a variety of weapons for each type along with subs. For the SplatCharger there was the basic one, one with a scope and also a longer ranged one with a longer charging time. For subs there were also ones you could place that team mates could jump to and one that would mark enemies.
I think there were quite a few others shown in the direct and the only weapon that won't be available right away is the paintbrush.

I'll have to re-check the direct, but I believe they said that they are randomly added to the weapons available to buy.
