I think the reason why they are marketing the multiplayer side so hard is that it is the side they will be supporting the longest and they are trying to show people they can make online multiplayer games. Call of Duty often markets the Single-Player as it has the big action scenes but most people play the Multiplayer in the game. I wouldn't take their marketing to mean that is the focus of development or where most content will be.
At least it's not locked behind a pay wall. I much rather them do this to get the game out now. We can get familiar with it before more content comes later.

If I was only ever able to have Monster Hunter and EO games in the future, I would be a happy man.

I bet that is part of it, they want to release more complicated levels but need people to be introduced to these simpler levels first. Just like why they require you to level up before going into ranked, it is to make a better overall experience. There are a lot of players that would jump into a match, get killed 5 times in a row, destroy their rank, then quit the game and never come back.
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...
I think some people don't realize...they don't have to buy a game at launch. That's fine if you want to wait until more of the content is there. It took me over a year to buy 3D World, and my head didn't burst into flames and the game didn't suck because I waited.
Also, my time playing Halo back in the day makes me think a strong variety for maps and stuff is not a big deal for any of the reasons people say. Most of my time playing Halo 1 on the PC (which was probably at least 700 hours) was spent on the same few maps and the same 3 game modes. The rest of the content basically exists for the sole purpose of keeping things interesting rather than being anything that you will spend any significant time with (I think the lesser used game modes in Halo I played .5% of the time in total). That's not saying that's not important, but I honestly don't think any mode that doesn't appeal to both me and a significant amount of other people is gonna be used that much. That being said, more content is still important for the reason I just said. Underused modes and maps make the overused modes and maps better.
Also, single player and certain other things make me thinks this beats Mario Kart on average for content, even at launch. It also helps that imo, online shooting is way more replayable and interesting than online racing.
Okay, let me give my thoughts on this: Does it bother that some of these various trinkets probably should be available at the start? A little. Why am I not enraged? Well...because they're at least free. Trust me, if Nintendo was actually charging for this stuff, then I would cancel my pre-order(also, THAT would've been a real reason to boycott the game, and NOT the lack of voice chat.). Plus for all I know some of it could've come late in development, and they just didn't have enough time.
There is nothing here...except for the stuff I just typed...
Wi-Fi Game List:

At the same time though, Nintendo shouldn't be discouraging people from buying it Day 1.

I agree. While I will still be buying day 1, this very limited initial experience means I expect Splatoon will probably last about the same length as New Super Luigi U (about 20 hours). Thankfully Yoshi is coming out at the end of June which will definitely be a longer experience (Yoshi games are generally easy to complete but insanely hard getting all the collectables, Yoshi's Island DS is the exception with insanely difficult final world)

But by the time you get Yoshi in the end of June, Splatoon will most probably have more (online) content than it had day 1? That's the idea of the whole thing. ("New stages will be available every few weeks.", according to the NoE direct.)
I got an email from the future where people confirmed on twitter that the game is indeed too small to enjoy. Also, the updates and maps are a lie. In fact, the game is not really a game. It’s a cartoon. Without voice chat, which we know this type of game needs as all the previous splatoons have proven. Cancel your pre-orders, everyone. Let’s not buy it. It’s gonna suck.

The number of different modes will still be very lacking by the time Yoshi comes out. Back when I used to play CoD, there was several different objective based modes (Domination, Capture the Flag, Demolition, Team Defender, Drop Zone and many more). Now with Splatoon there's only Turf War, Splat Zones and Tower Control (we won't consider Rainmaker here because there's no info on it). Also even though the number of stages will keep increasing, the big unknown question is how long the wait is until there's a reasonable number (even Advanced Warfare has nearly 3 times as many maps as Splatoon at launch).
Have you guys ever thought that maybe they are only starting with one online mode and adding a few more, because they don't want to split the player base too quickly? This game doesn't have Mario in the title, so it's not going to sell well to many people most likely. I predict a million, if that. And that is nowhere NEAR the levels of popular online shooters. I'm glad they are gradually adding modes, they need to keep everyone on the same one for a while.

@NinjaWaddleDee After a little while has passed, i honestly think this is a really good idea. I remember seeing someone put that Splatoon will sell MK8 numbers which i thought was hilarious. This game will need all the help it can get to maintain an online community and with these free updates and DLC hopefully that can be achieved.

Exactly. People need to stop complaining and realise what nintendo is trying to do here. They aren't selling you an incomplete game. They are dishing out new multiplayer modes over time to keep your interest and to keep the most likely low playerbase high.
