Topic: Should Metroid control like Splatoon?

Why don't we all get rid of the 10-year old notion that motion controls are the best control method and accurate and fun to use. And forcing them on lazy gamers like myself is a good idea. Seriously, I just want to sit down, and move my fingers to press buttons.

Splatoon basically forces motion controls on you (yes, you can turn it off, but it's kinda hard to aim most weapons without it because the game was built around motion controls). It's annoying. You know what game doesn't have motion controls and is a great shooter? Halo. Or Destiny. And a ton of other shooters on the Xbox use that control scheme and it works. Seriously, Nintendo made the Wii U Pro Controller, basically one of the best controllers ever, and it would be amazing for shooters. The GamePad can the the same thing, even be integrated without motion controls. Motion controls are just a pain in the butt whenever I use them, and I could never figure out why Nintendo just keeps on using them.

I can't believe how lazy some gamers are. If moving your arms a bit while sitting on the sofa is physically demanding for you, I think you might want to look more into your health.
Yes, gyro controls like on Splatoon would be welcome. Even better is Wii remote and nunchuk setup, which I hope is added up to Splatoon too.

It's not that it's physically demanding at all. I don't know where that came from. It's that it's harder to use than the thumbstick controls that every other games use. And in Splatoon, it's so oversensitive that the camera never seemed to sit still.

That is highly debatable, though. Twin stick controls always felt harder and inaccurate to me at least.
In Splatoon, I don't have a problem with it, but you can reset the gyro with Y if needed.

It's not "physically demanding." No one ever said that. But I do not want to move my arms at all. I just don't. It's annoying, and if I wanted to move my arms, I'd do something else. I want a control scheme that I can manage with only my fingers.

Besides, that's like saying the Kinect is bad because you have to stand up to use it. Yeah, I don't want to stand up to play a video game. But it's also inaccurate, it doesn't calibrate correctly for me, it's sometimes too sensitive and other times not sensitive enough, whenever I give voice commands to it, it interprets what I say incorrectly, and it's just an overall annoyance. The physical aspect is only one of the bigger problems with it.

And in any shooter, accuracy and easy of control is crucial.

I'm not some 500 pound guy that can't get up, but if I don't want controls that only work with motion, then I don't want controls that work only with motion.

I hope you guys aren't thinking about holding the GamePad arms stretched out and moving your arms. That's not how it works. Just a small tilt of the GamePad is more than enough to do the job. With your wrist.
Anyway though, since I don't think the majority of (a) Metroid U's gameplay would be focused around the third person view, Splatoon's controls might not be perfect for Metroid U. I believe Nintendo would give us options: Pro Controller, GamePad w/ or w/o motion controls, and Wiimote + Nunchuk. I just don't get the hate towards motion controls...

I don't know how everyone else is using motion controls, but I never have to move my arms. It doesn't require more motion than moving a mouse.

Dude, the Gamepad never leaves my lap. Which is why I feel they're oversensitive in Splatoon...it doesn't take much motion to register on screen, and it really bugs the crap out of me.

@CanisWolfred I believe you can adjust the sensitivity, it's in the same menu as the other control options.

As long as the next metroid can be controlled with the pro controller, or buttons on the gamepad, I'll be good. Yes, I know I'm lazy or whatever. But I just don't find motion controls that intuitive or even fun. Just let me use the dang right stick.

Also, Retro just tweeted the phrase, "Can you dig it?" #E32015. Sooo there's that! We may see Retro at E3 afterall!

Alright, let me say this, since so many people are going to argue about this.

Nintendo needs to stop pushing motion controls. What I mean by this is, well, I basically have to use motion controls in Splatoon. I can turn them off, but the game is so heavily centered around the motion control aiming that turning it off cripples me. I've tried using various weapons without motion controls, and it's just impossible in Splatoon. And that doesn't mean the motion controls are good and dual stick is bad, it means that Splatoon is heavily centered on motion controls and dual stick was added without much consideration to anyone who disliked motion controls, such as myself. As it is, The only weapon that I can actually turn off motion controls and do better with is the Splat Roller, and that's because that requires minimal aiming.

Is that something we can agree to? Options? With no option being superior to the other?

But motion controls are frequently just better than dual stick for shooters like this. Thus this only works if they actively make the motion controls worse.

This would almost be the equivalent of complaining that a PC FPS uses the mouse.

1st person and 3rd person shooters don't tend to do well in Japan. I remember reading that they just don't like dual analogue controls. A reason Splatoon is owning the charts at the moment could be because of the gyroscope controls. So maybe, if the next Metroid incorporated them then it might sell more in Japan. I think a new Metroid (trilogy?) using the control pad would be great that uses the game pad for whatever they come up with.

@Grumblevolcano I didn't like the controls much on either. The Gamecube controls just felt... "stiff" I guess. Hard to explain.

As for the Wii motion controls, I'm not really a fan of motion controls in general.

I disagree. I do much better with motion controls off. Its not a fact that motion controls are superior. Its all subjective.

Exactly. I prefer dual stick. You prefer motion controls. So... as I said, can't we just agree on equal options?

Why don't we get rid of the 20 year old notion that the right stick is the best way to control a cursor and that anything else is a gimmick. And that putting up a barrier forcing people to learn it is a good idea. Seriously, I just want to be able to point to a place on the screen and press a button, not have to drag a cursor around and hope I didn't over or under shoot

Well, I tend to play lying down(belly facing down), so my wrists are in a comfortable position where they can be moved around without much irritation. For some reason, I play worse when I'm sitting upright... weird shrug

I can't really believe I'm saying this, but I was playing Halo 3 this morning(while my free trial of RE:R2 was downloading), and I darn well wished it had motion controls! My wrists could not stop moving when I was aiming and all that. Too much Splatoon?
