Link as a girl, no. Zelda as the lead character on the other hand could be interesting though, some Zeldas have been very capable of fighting, even without Link around. It would be interesting to see her lead in a game for a change.

You lost me once you started talking about the multiple timelines nonsense.
As for the title discussion; I don't see any reasons why Link should only be a male character. From what I remember, there are no major relations between Link and Zelda besides some royal blood and having pieces of the Triforce, so it is not like there has been some consistent love relationship involving the two characters (ignoring Skyward Sword). Sure, make Link a chick in the next Zelda. I don't think many people would care besides creepy fan-fiction writers who stay in their own corner of the internet most of the time.

It's really not nonsense. Nintendo released an official timeline in the Hyrule Historia.
The unified timeline, which comes first, has Skyward Sword, then Four Swords, then Minish Cap, then Ocarina of Time. Then, the Timeline splits into three.
Timeline A is if Link fails and dies. It starts with A Link to the Past, followed by the Oracle games, then Link's Awakening, Then Zelda 1, then Zelda 2
Timeline B is continuing from Link's perspective, warning the King about Ganondorf when he's still a child. It starts with Majora's Mask, then Twilight Princess, then Four Swords Adventures.
Timeline C is continuing from Zelda's perspective after she's sent back Link and remains alone. Hundreds of years pass, then Wind Waker, then Phantom Hourglass, then Spirit Tracks.
...yeah
Since it was mentioned, Super Princess Peach was simply a case of Nintendo making a what-if scenario into reality. Instead of asking "Does this new idea allow for better gameplay?" rather than just being "different."
More to the point I think a playable female character set in the Zelda universe could be very cool. But to call that character "Link" is to forever bastardize a beloved character by saying anyone by that name can claim to be the legendary hero. It would also call into question the gender of all of Link's "ancestors." Say it's not so, but with a scrap of evidence fan-boys minds run a muck.
Woah... that would be interesting. But its clear most of its fanbase don't want extreme changes. My proof is the reaction Nintendo got from fans when they announced Wind Waker Link.

... so? i thought that was the point of Link being reincarnated through time, it's always someone named Link who winds up the legendary hero. I don't see it as bastardization, I see it as 'something different for the series'.

again... so what? still not seeing where the impossibility lies in some of Link's hero ancestors being female. It's a 50/50 shot in each incarnation as to which gender Link winds up being, after all. :3

So Link's ancestors are all men. And Zelda's are all women.

And can you go a little faster?!
Ugh, I think this is why I haven't really gotten into the Zelda series (as in not played any of the games). Ridiculously confusing in more ways then one.
I'll stick to my seemingly genderless plant/animal hybrids thank you (I'm pretty sure Pikmin don't have genders, since they reproduce from separate structures).
This is probably the first time I've heard Zelda being complex. Unless you're talking about the timeline? Which is 99.5% unimportant to the games themselves.
If link were a girl I would actually like it.. It's like the majority of female characters are only good for getting kidnapped. That being said Zelda can stay a girl. We just need more female characters to do the saving for once. Also Link is always quite, it's not like he ever had a voice. His gender wouldn't even matter. I thought link in the oracle of seasons was girl.(and I still suspect he is) Or just make a game with zelda as the main character, If your that against a gender bender.

I'm pretty sure he's male in both Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages.
Nope. I don't think so at all. On a side note, the first time I played Super Smash Bros (Melee), I had barely heard of Zelda. I thought Zelda could switch from Zelda, the girl, to Sheik, the man :l Ever since, I have decided I never want to see a famous Nintendo star swap genders. Besides... would it work, a woman saving Zelda? Link being a boy fits the role much better ._.

It's severely outdated, but I guess you can look at it if you want. (?)

I think honestly it's just me. I've never really been good with RPG or otherwise-esch games (in other words, where you run all over the place to grab specific items and use them at the correct time and area). For example, I tried playing Ocarina of Time on my bother-in-law's Wii, and never got past the forest, even when I played it for almost an hour. And yet I still really like the franchise as a whole all the same. My friend is similar. He likes Pikmin, but only played the first one and quit after five minutes into it, whereas I have played both games to death and can name every creature by memory. I guess you can say one can be a fan of something, and yet not actually participate in it, if that makes sense anyway.
