Would your opinion be the same if instead of the billboards and signs for things like Toad Pistons/Service, Bowser Oil, Bullet Bill Speedtrials, etc., we had the real life equivalents of Midas, Penzoil, F1 advertisements, etc?
Because my biggest gripe with this sort of DLC is that I'm afraid that's where it'll eventually lead.
Too bad things like that would prevent you from enjoying the game.
:>
Funny thing that you mention that DLC will lead that way. So we will get in the end a DLC that changes those billboards to the real life equivalents? :>
The original game has no such thing as that, and if a DLC that you want so much had that, you will either had to cope with it or not play it :>
Remember, Nintendo cant please everyone after all :>
And saying it will end like that with a free kart DLC out of marketing is a pretty bold assumption :>
Didn't SSX 3 (3?) have upside 7up logos all over the place?
Super Monkey Ball has Dole Banana logos in it. This is when it becomes annoying. When it's bluntly in your face like that and forced.
The Mercedes car is totally optional. Mercedes probably paid out the nose for it and Nintendo said "okay, but only as DLC. We don't want it in the original game".

Even advertising like that doesn't bother me. We might as well complain about every advertisement ever.
The olympics are sponsered by Coke and McDonalds, so their logos are there. Get the f*** over it. This isn't directed at anyone specifically, BTW.

Now that you mention SMB, true. I think it was a bit excessive, but I personally didn't mind the bananas since you could barely see the 'Dole' texture on the banana model itself. But it kinda got annoying on beginner 8 and master 5, where you had the HUGE Dole texture right there...
Thankfully the deluxe version removed it.

I haven't owned TV service in a decade precisely because I despise the double-dipping that the advertising-centric medium perpetuates. I use Netflix and Amazon instead. Likewise, I also use a combination of both Adblock and NoScript for web browsing.
Thus, I'm probably more sensitive to this sort of thing since I'm not exposed to it nearly as much as your average person. But I will say I don't mind it nearly as much if it's something optional that I can opt out of.
@Dreamz
FYI, antenna TV still exists and I'm pretty sure everyone uses adblock and such. The point is that you can't avoid advertising. If I'm driving down the road and see a billboard that tells me not to do meth, when I didn't even know meth existed in the first place, and is blocking my view of a tree I want to see, you think the city will care about my request to take down the billboard? The answer is hell no, especially if it makes them enough money to put a billboard somewhere else, which they will also gain revenue from.
My only complaint is that the character logo/colours don't appear on it like other vehicles. It looks a bit silly, but you know there's a car that looks like a caterpillar and a Yoshi motorbike, so I can't see the problem myself.
As far as Nintendo "selling out" goes, Nintendo isn't some kind of charitable or fine-arts organisation - I mean these characters have been slapped on all kinds of crap FOR DECADES. Frankly I think the fact that Mercedes Benz wanted to use Mario in an advert and have one of their cars in a game is very positive for Nintendo - not because they're struggling financially, but because they have sufficient positive Brand Recognition that Mercedes thinks it's good to be associated with them. It's a point someone else made already, but I thought it bore repeating. This isn't about Nintendo being desperate, it's about Nintendo being MAINSTREAM.
So please spare everyone the hand-wringing about Nintendo further leveraging their brand, I mean this shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who's paid attention to any of the shareholder briefings over the past year!
2. as such an advertisement paid car wouldn't be poopoodoodoocacapoopledoopledoggiepoople cause then no one would use it thus ruining the concept.
3 If it's not garbage then its probably good.
4. we know its japan only so if it's good then japan players have an advantage, as anyone who actually plays mario kart knows you race internationally.

5. it breaks immersion.
1. No poopoodoodoodoggiepoopsiedoosiedoodles.
2. What?
3. It's a car like all the others.
4. It comes overseas soon.
5. How? It's a CAR.
I've yet to see anything about it not being a japan exclusive. If the car was cruddy it would be bad advertising and as it stands only the Japanese have it but can still use it against us. It breaks immersion because it's a car, the game is called mario kart. GameXplain did a good discussion on this. It looks unnatural and aesthetically unlike anything else in the game. You can't make the don't like it don't use it argument because you sitll have to see it in races.
To put it simply, not everyone is going to like everything Nintendo does and the sooner the fanbase stops acting like Nintendo is the second coming of Jesus and acknowledges Nintendo is capable of doing things that are dumb or poor the sooner we stop the passive aggressive "you're not a real fan: that has been going around on these forums.
What makes it more sad is you can tell by the grammar and mannerisms it's the new teenage fanbase that's mostly guilty of this.

Do you get butthurt when you see this car in MK8 as well? It looks very realistic, and all its's missing is a brand name. There is also an F1 style realistic looking racecar available to use as well.

I'll be too busy making tinfoil hats over there to answer this thread anymore.
Anyone who drives that Mercedes is far more likely to attract green shells/red shells/fireballs/bob-ombs/piranha plant attacks as well as increased ramming and other acts of petty vindictiveness that make Mario Kart the harmless family-friendly fun for all ages that it is, so I don't think we need to worry too much about it. If anything, we should be grateful that with that free DLC we also get a new free game mode: Hunt the Merc
