Topic: POST MS and Sony press conferences, perspective on Wii U

After having watched the whole things yesterday I have to say I came away unimpressed and believe following:

  • XBox One might have the best launch titles
  • PS4 owned Xbox One in EVERY other regard, no DRM, used games are okay, no region lock, cheaper sub-fee for online
  • general lack of creativity in all games shown except a few examples
  • PLENTY of room for the Wii U to co-exist and deliver unique gaming experiences
  • crowd was wowed by PS4 though, might be nice to have a Wii U as secondary console though
  • as expected the step from last gen to next gen was (to me) not that visually impressive
  • SAME old concepts lightly better looking

That said I hope for a good Nintendo Direct today and that Nintendo doesn't drown completely in mainly Sony's spotlight and the general public gets a good idea what the Wii U is all about and that it delivers GAMES first and foremost. Seriously, after having seen all those graphical showcases I saw nothing my PC couldn't do 2 years ago and again it didn't impress me really, I'll take good ideas over graphic-showcasing any day. The most interesting game I saw so far was LEGO MARVEL HEROES - which will come to Wii U and given the nature of the Lego games will look mostly the same on all consoles anyway!

Thoughts?

Wii-U can certainly co-exist, but we have to face reality. They're not really a AAA third party player. I don't think they have to be. I'm going to buy a Wii-U for Nintendo games. That's what they're good at. But I also think they need to try harder. They have a third party vacuum to fill somehow. Indies that can be played on tablets probably won't excite a lot of potential customers. They don't need to do this to beat the competition, but to have a respectably, good selling console.

I agree with what you said really, Nintendo will need that support for sales and the sales for keeping the platform alive, but from my personal perspective (being somewhat grumpy gamer in my 30ies longing for gaming-days long gone) there isn't even much I'd like to have on Wii U from what I've seen from Sony and MS.

KH3 and FF15 were not announced as exclusives on PS4. They might be just be brought to Xbox One as well but I think that their existence on Wii U is likely considering Wii U can hold its own against the 2 consoles more than the Wii could.

Looking forward to the Nintendo Direct at E3! Nintendo will definitely wow us After PS4 price reveal I expect a price drop as well of $50 and if they are removing the old basic bundle they might just add a new one, i.e. Wii U 32 GB without all the addons!

Wii U still on top of my list followed by PS4!

Nintendo fan, with a taste for all genres! Monster Hunter for the win!

Oh and Isaac for Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS!

I'm extremely tempted to buy a PS4. There's nothing wrong with too many consoles, right?

Nintendo needs to announce a lot of games today. 7 months after launch, and out of all games available or officially announced, I am only interested in Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101 and Monolith's game, while there's loads more on the other two, existing franchises and new IP. I expect 3D Mario and Retro's game to be added to that list but it needs to be a lot more. On the other two there is Metal Gear Solid 5, Ryse, Forza 5, Quantum Break, Sunset Overdrive, Witcher 3, Dead Rising 3, Crimson Dragon, D4, Halo, Titanfall, The Order, Infamous: Second Son, Knack, Final Fantasy XV, Kingdom Hearts III, Destiny, Mirror's Edge 2 and The Division. Wii U needs games, specifically stuff we can't play on 360 and PS3. Assassins Creed 4 and Watch Dogs look great, but neither of those is gonna convincing me to get a Wii U since I have a 360.

Wii U's problem is it won't be able to handle the Xbox One/PS4 only stuff like The Division, Thief 4 and Witcher 3. To get good 3rd party games, Nintendo has to convince developers to make games specifically for Wii U, and they're going to struggle to do that if sales don't drastically improve.

Personally I'm happy with the Wii U being just for Nintendo games but I think a lot of people here were expecting to get all the big multiplatform games this time. I really, really hope Nintendo knock it out of the park today with a mix of their major franchises and importantly, brand new IPs.

Microsoft had a very average presentation. There were the exclusives but there wasn't much that had me really excited. Not much in terms of new gameplay even though it all looked pretty shiny. Like Ryse which looked like the same old game even though it was very shiny indeed. The worst bit was the polish of the presentation itself, it seemed very scripted and it was clear nobody was actually playing the demos. Made Nintendo's decision to do a pre-recorded Direct look very smart indeed.

Sony was slightly different. Similar technical problems in the show itself but they hit where it counted. Lower price, less restrictions and a good relationship with third parties and independents. No killer apps and not as much content as Microsoft but I could see myself getting one at some point. So they were well ahead of Sony.

I don't think Nintendo will "win" E3 because I think Sony has already got this.... but I think Nintendo could actually come out with some new styles of games. That's what has been lacking so far, the vast majority of these games seem to be the same few ideas with different skins. If Nintendo comes out with a new idea or an exclusive that's a deeper "mature" experience along the lines of the last Tomb Raider or Bioshock Infinite then I'll be very, very happy.

Price is what's gonna dictate it alll

Wii U is gonna have some huge problems vs the PS4, Publishers gonna flock to it like there's no tomorrow. It also has nearly double the power of the Wii U, there won't be much compromise in frame-rate and graphics. PS4 basically took the money spend on the Wii U's gamepad and channeled it into a better GPU/CPU

They definitely need to show games and wow potential customers. That said I truly believe the times where you could pick ONE console and get all the goods you wanted sans a few exclusives are over. If they drop the price on Wii U just a bit many people would consider it as a secondary console which would drive sales nonetheless. Sure there's a plethora of games you just mentioned and they will very likely find their market and customers who long for them, but for me personally (you know, the grumpy oldschool gamer I am) I really was not too impressed except a few exceptions:

  • Metal Gear Solid 5 // looks "solid" (haha wordplay) wouldn't get a console for this one game though
  • Ryse // looks slightly better than what my PC did 2 years ago but this quick time event fest is horrible. This could have been good...
  • Forza 5 // far less "Motorsport" than ever before, I guess they continue going arcade and social media instead on focusing on racing.
  • Quantum Break // Could be interesting, but I fear it will end up as mediocre gimick.
  • Sunset Overdrive // Just no.
  • Witcher 3 // Good games but I didn't like them too much.
  • Dead Rising 3 // Seriously? People are still interested in Zombies and the only thing next gen does to the genre is... MORE Zombies? No Coop? Pff.
  • Halo // Nothing was shown to judge but at this point I grew tired at the franchise, loved the first 3 though.
  • Titanfall // Generic shooter, yay.
  • The Order // Generic shooter riding the steampunk wave, yay, at least it got some personality.
  • Infamous // Hipster game, while nice idea and good execution, nothing I'd play.
  • Knack // Just no.
  • Final Fantasy // Never liked them after 16bit Era.
  • Kingdom Hearts III // Never liked it.
  • Destiny // COULD be good, need to see more, nothing to buy a console for though.
  • Mirrors Edge 2 // Nope.
  • The Devision // This is the only title that looks interesting, like a "clever" shooter, I always liked them Tom Clancy games.
  • Assassins Creed // Don't like the series.
  • Watchdogs // Remains to be seen, if its like GTA IV its BORING!
  • GTA 5 // Remains to be seen, if its like GTA IV its BORING!

Of course we still need to hear more about all those games since judging them by just trailers and maybe a few minutes of gameplay is not the way to go, but honestly, I expect many "broken promises" and "expectation bubbles" to be burst, like always at the beginning of a new generation of consoles.

So there you have it, I am very picky about my games but perfectly fine that many people will find joy in those games and it sucks most of them won't be on Wii U, but for me it was mostly quite bland anyways! Before you say "yeah that jackhat doesn't like anything" I DO like plenty, see my signature, on top of that I liked the old Halo Games, Mercanaries, Battlefield 1942, Vietnam, Modern Combat, Bad Company 1+2, ... plenty of more games from the olden days. But nowadays, it's too bland for me. People don't like to innovate too much.

I agree with all that you said, I personaly HATE tablet or mobile gaming but since everyone is focusing SO MUCH on having some iPad functionality with their game Nintendo would have been wiser to do just that as well instead of focusing on making their own tablet and rather spend the Wii U some more power. Also Nintendo didn't do themselves a favour in NOT making their machine on x86 (PC) Standard like the other two's, further complicating the porting process to their system.

So far my Plan is to get a Wii U accompanying my PC, maybe even a PS3 (have an XBOX360 at home too, collecting dust) and catch up on the good Sony exclusives, not picking up Xbox One AT ALL and MAYBE a PS4 and of next year if there are any reasonable games out and the inevitable starting problems are solved.

The XBox One: $599. The PS4: $549. These are the launch prices in Australia. I wanted a PS4 at launch to catch up on PS3 games and Classics, but it's way too expensive for my tastes. I am still looking interested in getting it when the price drops, though, even if I'll need to wait for ages.
Dear Microsoft, Internet connection from my room is shoddy- I do not want to move out my console to the living room every day just to have it authorised. By the way, you wouldn't let me play my older games from your older consoles on your new machine if I bought it, so thanks for that...

It was just... fine, though. Not many games really interested me, but I'm sure that other people are going to enjoy them. Never gonna buy a One, I'll be waiting for the PS4 to get a bunch of cool exclusives and a price drop ~

Also, I just want to say- though this wasn't in either Sony nor Microsoft's conference- for some reason I really want the new Plants VS Zombies game. It's not just me, is it?

Wii U Need more games. With this super-bad 3rd party support Nintendo will have to produce much more games.

How many games we expect / year for Wii u (including all 3rd,2nd,1st party developers)?
5? 10?

Well we need much-much more.
