First. I have to mention that I LOVE the design for the secret base. It's like an area from Metal Gear.
What I'm afraid it's going to have little substance behind it outside of a dungeon that leads up to a Koopaling.
Y'know, out of everything, this is what's likely bugging me the most. And I can't believe it took me so long to realise this: This game nor Sticker Star had a true sub-villain. Nearly half of the chapter bosses in the first three Paper Mario games didn't have any relation to the main villain of said game. Hooktail had nothing to do with Cortex or Shadow Queen, Tubba Blubba had nothing to do with Bowser, and King Croacus had nothing to do with Bleck. They were all separate characters wither they're own motivations, they were the bosses of their own that provided extra motivation for said chapter. This game is likely going to have none of that, none of the Koopalings are going to be relevant before you fight them, they are just filler challenges before finding the paint star.
Why is there a base? Who sent you there? Those are things an earlier Paper Mario would probably tell you, but for now it just looks like 'Because Bowser, just deal with it'. The secret base just becomes a fancy empty husk.
Am I the only one to see it like this? I know everyone has the complain with the Koopalings in the game, but I always felt that was because they were appearing everywhere lately. I've seen very few people talk about the motivation aspect.
But dang, that secret base sure looks great. The Toads acting like secret agents actually seems like fun this time around.
@Seacliff Of those characters you mentioned, only Cortex and King Croacus have no relation to the main villain. Every single chapter boss in the first Paper Mario is working for Bowser with explicit instructions to guard a Star Spirit, they didn't just find them one day and decided to keep them. Tubba Blubba in particular only became invincible with Bowser's help.
As for Hooktail, she and her siblings were created by the Shadow Queen to further terrorize the world (with Bonetail at the bottom of the Pit of 100 Trials, a torture chamber). They just happened to outlive her, in a sense.
What I'd like to know is, who's the guy who sold Iggy these chariots.
Also, he proves to be a surprisingly graceful loser. From what we've seen, these paper Koopalings seem to have somewhat different characterizations than we're used to.
I'm still bummed that the bosses are mainly just the koopalings. I'm guessing bowser won't have any interesting motivation other than "lol im bad". Which is a shame, because the potential for a narratively interesting game is there, they just go out of their way to not do so.
Seeing a playthrough of that chapter, the NPCs might not be as visually distinct, but they ARE much better animated. They all have back-facing sprites, when previously those were pretty much limited to just Mario and maybe Peach.
After seeing the full gameplay clip ending in the Iggy boss battle, my hype is through the roof for this game!
All thI excellent humor, and despite lack of actual character diversity there is tons of personality and crazy diverse events and ideas.
I'm 100% sold now, that video did it.
Psalms 22:16 (1,000 yrs before Christ)
They pierced My hands and feet
Isaiah 53:5 (700 yrs before Christ)
He was pierced for our transgressions
Zachariah 12:10 (500 yrs before Christ)
They will look on Me whom they pierced
I'm not sure at exactly what time it started in the stream, but the Japanese 3DS direct actually had a new trailer for this game, for anyone who's interested.
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

This "Koopalings appearing in every game" - the most typical complaint about the Koopalings - is actually a mantra that is not consistent with the games that are actually released, unless Mario Party 10, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, and Super Mario Maker are not counted for unknown reasons (I could also cite Mario Golf: World Tour, Super Mario 3D Land/World, Super Mario Galaxy 2, but I hope the point is clear).
The word you used, everywhere, is actually more decent than the ones I usually read even though I still think is a bit of an hyperbole argument (Bowser Jr. the last two years has been in more Mario games than the Koopalings even without counting Mini Mario & Friends: amiibo Challenge and without considering Bowser Jr. as being in Color Splash - the only good thing I find about the Koopalings mantras is that now almost nobody complains about Bowser Jr., who I happen to like too ).
For sure, the Koopalings are now frequently used characters. They are also in the two "main characters" pages of the "Encyclopedia Super Mario Bros.". Unfortunately, I'd say that recently it was mainly AlphaDream, the Mario Kart 8 development team and SEGA (that followed AlphaDream characterization) that cared about them and used them quite well - and unfortunately Mario Kart 8 ended up with a questionable roster, with important holes, i. e. characters used in at least two previous Mario Kart games, with Bowser Jr. being one of the the worst offenders along with Dry Bones, of which Mario Kart 8 even has rigged 3D models that are used to create obstacles in Bone Dry Dunes.
To return on topic, I think it is too early to talk about the motivation aspect, as only a few parts of the courses were shown so far - the story won't likely be something to write home about, but saying in advance that every course won't have any motivation to be exactly like it is could be a bit excessive. Furthermore, in Crimsom Tower, some lines of dialogue revealed that Morton is met before the final battle. The characterization of the Koopalings so far doesn't seem to be on the same level of Paper Jam - Morton fans are crying in the corner - but admittedly in that game the Paper Koopalings were revealed, so it might just be that this game's characterization came before AlphaDream did their very good job on the Koopalings' personalities - and even if it wasn't, the concept of "paper characters" itself can be used as an excuse for simpler characterization.
Anyway, in the recent Japanese trailer Petey Piranha was shown:
Not something on the level of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, in which the Koopalings could coexist with original characters, story and settings, but it could be an improvement...
Someone pointed out that Petey looks very different to other characters there.
Perhaps he's not a boss? Maybe he's some of thing card or partner or something instead? Dunno.
But if he is a boss, at least there's a tiny bit more variety than just Koopalings. Which is alright.
He has a strange tail, which is why I am cautious here and used could. As far as we have seen, each Big Paint Star is guarded by a Koopaling, and there are six slots in Port Prisma. This means that one of the Koopalings might not even guard a Big Paint Star, and he or she would be fought instead before the final boss. However, nowhere is written that some minibosses before the Koopalings cannot exist, but we don't have many proofs of their existence either - the Shady Sledge Bro is a bit borderline in this regard.
(By the way, since Bowser Jr. is nowhere to be found and since islands, mysteries and paint are Bowser Jr.'s tropes, he might be the final boss, but this is just speculation.)
@TomJ Nope. It's just Tabata being bad at PR for this game. Nothing strange here (Seriously though, she should not be doing these interviews. All she ever accomplishes is making people dislike the game even more.).
Somehow, this director has absolutely no knowledge of the Mario series in general, let alone Paper Mario. I mean, all Toads? Has she played Mario 64, Sunshine or the Galaxy games? Or 3D World?
I have absolutely no idea what was going on the last time I watched a gameplay video. This is either going to be an interesting surprise when it comes out, or a depressing failure.
