That Toad comparison crack is getting old, and in fact is borderline insulting to the true charm of TTYD. Nobody remembers the Toads of that game because of the way they looked (and if they were, they're likely no better than the standard Toads of Sticker Star), it was their personalities and actions that sold them.
These "Rescue-V" Toads already seem to be doing more than the vast majority of Toads in past games, actively assisting Mario (and succeeding!) like the Toad Brigade from the Galaxy games, except actually competent. They may or may not get into trouble at some point, but they definitely seem more the sort to go down fighting instead of cowering.
That blue Toad at the beach is also surprisingly tough, trying to set out on an adventure on the sea, and when a tidal wave comes by courtesy of a fan, surfs it like a boss. Almost feels like a clever nod to the playable blue Toad in games like Super Mario Bros 2 and 3D World.
Congrats to them. Even though it's just different colored toads in scarfs, at least it's better than the billion other generic toads there are. It's a step in the right direction.
And @meleebrawler, it's disingenuous to say that the only leg Paper Mario 1-3 had up on the NSPMB is story and character. The character designs themselves were also very gratuitous: You could tell that every inch of those games had effort and love and actual human thought poured into it. Just look at the difference between the Excess Express and this new train through a badlands with fuzzys on it: The difference is night and day. All the "new" characters and environments look copy pasted with no landmarks, differentiating factors, or indeed character.
@Haru17 When did I ever say that? I just said they were the most memorable parts of those games. This isn't to say I don't appreciate the designs put into them, but if you were to, say, replace all the NPCs in those games with Toads as well, it wouldn't make me enjoy the games less as much as other things.
And we're not. Talking. About. Sticker Star. I'm well aware of that game's faults, including it's lacking plot and characters. But we've gotten multiple pieces of evidence pointing to Color Splash addressing many of those faults, both from the gameplay and narrative perspective. If you'd rather remain hung up on the remaining similarities and claim they doom the game, be my guest. We won't know how the plot stands until we actually receive it, and though it's unlikely to be as grand as either TTYD's or Super's, that doesn't mean we can't have fun with it.
unless Sticker Star is really the norm going forward, Paper Mario is one of the few series I want to own every game in the series (Mario RPGs in general). I'll get it someday at least. Only other series with a significant amount of games I can say that with are Zelda, Metroid, Kirby and Ace Attorney. (it helps that I already own most of the games from these series)
Well, at least the Toads look different, so there's that. Still, I really don't think I wanna get this. This just isn't what I'm looking for in Paper Mario. At the most, this looks...okay. I'm not gonna spend fifty bucks on something that's just "okay". @CM30 That image just makes this direction make even less sense...come to think of it, I don't think I've seen any of those npcs in a while...yet the Toads remain...what is it with Nintendo and Toads?
There is nothing here...except for the stuff I just typed...
Obviously adding more characters and species was a mistake Nintendo is eager to fix.
I just realized that we haven't seen a Yoshi around; even Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, the Mario JRPG that managed not to introduce any new character, had Yoshis as NPCs...
@DarthNocturnal Well, you could always get it pre-owned. If it ends up being like Sticker Star, it shouldn't be too hard (you can get a copy of that game used for 9 bucks on Amazon, plus an additional 4 for shipping).
