Do people actually enjoy TTYD's combat for regular enemies more than Super Paper Mario? Dispatching enemies in SPM is just so quick and simple. You don't have to go through a tedious battle screen for every single enemy.
I can understand bosses though. I'd much rather have a long memorable boss fight than a quick and simple one.
The game lacks random encounters, so you can choose your fights and pace yourself more often then not. And enemy groups usually stay dead until you leave an area.
If it used a random encounter system.... then yeah, there'd be a problem (unless enemy groups were kept small). Random encounter is best suited for faster battle paces.
Enemies do chase after you though. Really, at it's core I just find turn based battles tedious. The only reason I put up with Pokemon is the personal connection to each creature.
It's a matter of taste, really. It must be said, however, that turn-based battles in the Paper Mario games and in the Mario & Luigi games especially tend to be much more interactive, so that you just don't have to select a command, sit there and repeatedly press "A" until it's your turn again like in some old turn-based RPGs.
There's also a really useful badge in the first two games that lets you insta-finish all the weak enemies that wouldn't give you exp, no battle required.
There's also a really useful badge in the first two games that lets you insta-finish all the weak enemies that wouldn't give you exp, no battle required.
Yep, just by touching them. Surprisingly enough, a similar badge is always active in Paper Mario: Sticker Star: if you start with an attack and you deal enough damage so that the first enemy will be defeated, the battle doesn't even begin and you get a coin.
The gameplay they showed us perfectly matches the gameplay from the Sticker Star trailer...now I'm starting to get REALLY worried!
+∞ for finding this comparison, now let's see the positive aspect: Peach is not kidnapped and there is no mute Bowser in sight.
Other than that... well this reinforces the point of this being presented as a game based on Sticker Star and its principles down to how the trailer is made, so that's what we should expect. Really pleased if Nintendo is just trolling us, unsurprised if it isn't!
The lack of original characters (no new or returning) in place of a generic cast is disturbing. This trend for Mario RPGs needs to stop. Original charters and story are essential to the Mario RPGs. It's one thing to remove story from mainline Mario platformers, but RPGs need story. Fans love original characters like Goombella, Koops, Geno, Dimentio, Count Bleck, Fawful, Popple, Toadbert, Prince Peasly, Merlin, Twink, etc. If this trend continues we will never see new or returning original characters ever again. This guys expresses my concerns for Paper Mario Color Splash completely:
I want to love the Mario RPGs again I really do, but Nintendo makes it so hard when they restrict Alpha Dream and Intelligent System's creativity and talent. Miyamoto needs to stop ordering Mario RPGs to remove story and characters and let the developers do their best.
So far the cast of characters looks like generic Toads, toads, toads, toads, toads, toads, toads, toads and goombas, goombas, goombas, goombas, goombas and koopas, koopas, koopas, koopas, koopas, etc. While the older Mario RPGs had toads, at least each had developed personalities and character. How is the generic cast better than the way things were before? It wasn't. Fans love original characters in Mario RPGs, Miyamoto and high ups at Nintendo ordering the developers to remove it is just a selfish decision. It benefits no one.

Do we even know Miyamoto is doing this with Color Splash?
Its a trend. Why have Mario RPGs suddenly stopped having original characters and story? The developers Alpha Dream and Intelligent Systems didn't decide this, they were ordered too by their higher ups.
Sticker Star: Miyamoto ordered the removal of story and original characters in Sticker Star. Miyamoto told the developers of Sticker Star "It’s fine without a story, so do we really need one?’ And, ‘As much as possible, complete it with only characters from the Super Mario world". ( https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2012/11/latest_iwata_asks_ep... )
Dream Team: Nintendo tried to convince Dream Team to ditch story and characters too, but Alpha Dream fought back which is likely why Dream Team had great story and many new and returning original characters. Translations of an interview regarding Dream Team's development states "The requests and suggestions by Nintendo on Alpha Dream were not always accepted and often required meetings, or discussions with the SPD producers. Sometimes both parties got annoyed with each other." ( http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=67599871postcount=1 )
Paper Jam: It is evident by Paper Jam's more simplistic story and no original characters with the exception of Starlow, that this new rule (the banning of original characters and story from Mario RPGs) is still in place. Just like Sticker Star, the cast of characters was limited to generic characters (Toads, Toads, Toads, Toads, Toads, Toads, Goombas, Goombas, Goombas, Goombas). The crossover between the two series completely neglected previous original characters from both series, it was as if they never existed and had been retconned. No new originals were added either. Miyamoto likely restricted the developers once again.

Your logic and evidence seems sound and reasonable, so I'll agree with most of your points. Although, you seem to be lacking any substantial evidence for Dream Team and Paper Jam. So I'm not sure about those; can you provide further evidence?
@TheSuperStarSaga:
That's kind of what I've been saying all along. It's not enough to just talk positive about the better games. Sure it's not that important, but for those (including me) who love creativity and imagination in these games and want them to stay, sometimes the franchise needs tough love from its supporters, to point out the falws and trends like sore thumbs.
Can I use this moment to say something, real quick? Ahem...I don't care what all you Color Splash supporters out there say, I'm dissapointed with what we saw, and I'm tired of having my damn opinion disregarded as whining. Why is it that you're all allowed to say that this game looks great, but I'm not allowed to say I'm dissapointed? And before you say that I should shut up, let's go over all the potential reasons you'll probably give me:
1. "It's only a minute of footage." You're right...and in that minute of footage, it looked exactly like Sticker Star, to the point where it lined up perfectly with Sticker Star's trailer.
2. "Maybe they're just not showing any major changes like partners and original character now." If there were any significant changes from Sticker Star like those two, we probably would've seen them.
3. "It's early in development. Things can change!" The game is coming out this year, and it's March. I highly doubt there could be any significant changes made.
4. "B-but Wind Waker!" Okay, everyone bringing up Wind Waker, do me a favor: Shut up about Wind Waker. It's not the same thing. People hated that game because of the art-style. Here, we hate the game because it looks exactly like a game we all hated.
But I guess I really shouldn't complain, because really, only positive reactions are allowed here, and if you're not saying you're excited, you're a whiny child!
There is nothing here...except for the stuff I just typed...
But I guess I really shouldn't complain, because really, only positive reactions are allowed here, and if you're not saying you're excited, you're a whiny child!
You're generalizing. Only a few individuals on this thread are actually against you complaining.
All these conspiracy theories. You realize there were a few games that didn't get trailers right? Kirby didn't get a trailer, were they anticipating a bad reaction for that? What about rhythm heaven?
I call BS on the whole thing. The game is probably going to be a lot better than what some are suggesting. I doubt Nintendo is going out of their way to "ruin" Paper Mario. There had been what, one bad Paper Mario? Come on guys....
It's not conspiracies. I don't know how much you've followed Mario RPGs, and if you don't really follow them its understandable that you would feel this way.
Mario RPGs have always had great stories, and fun memorable characters. There are so many Mario and Nintendo fans who will always have the original characters from the games embedded in their hearts such as Goombella, Koops, Geno, Dimentio, Count Bleck, Fawful, Popple, Toadbert, Prince Peasly, Merlin, Twink, Kammy Koopa, etc . Recently Mario RPGs have stopped featuring story and character, and this trend keeps continuing meaning we might never see new or returning original characters and story again. This isn't just a conspiracy or speculation. It is an actual trend.
Sticker Star was ordered to have its story and original characters removed by Miyamoto (source: https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2012/11/latest_iwata_asks_ep... ). This set a new precedent for Mario RPGs. With Paper Jam it is evident that there are no original characters, and the story has been simplified as well. Paper Mario Color Splash is following suit with this trend. Dream Team likely managed to dodge this new rule, by fighting back against Nintendo's orders (source: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=67599871postcount=1 ). Its a good thing Dream Team didn't follow suit too, it had a great story and many original characters.
Fans don't want to see generic toads, toads, toads, toads, toads, goombas, goombas, goombas, etc. We want to see original characters and a fun story. That is one of the reasons why we are making noise. This trend needs to stop.
@TomJ: The fact that people can have different opinions?
I don't mind a simple story in games (note: simple story =/= bad story), as long as the gameplay is good. And I never was a fan of the character design in TTYD; some of these Toads don't even look like Toads anymore. I don't mind more classic/regular characters and enemies.
We still don't know how the battle system will work, but I doubt I'll dislike the game as much as some people have already committed themselves to. I'll probably have a good time with this and that's all that counts for me.
And here I thought the thread was intolerable a few pages ago and couldn't get any worse. And here I thought there might be semi-positive discussion about this game made in-between the regurgitation of Sticker Star hate. And here I thought that there were still at least a few people left that were contributing to this thread that were wiling to reserve judgement until closer to launch.
If only there was an obvious solution to this mess that was enacted a few pages ago that could allow for a Color Splash thread to be literally anything other than Sticker Star hate.
Oh well what do I know? It's not like I saw this coming or anything. I remember when the mod who closed the other thread down said that it was possible to post good things about the game here.
Good luck with that, glad to see this thread has since provided a lot of evidence to the contrary over the last few pages
