For reference, is the Wii U GamePad's screen worse than the Kindle Fire's? If so then I'll be fine with my pseudo-"Netflix on Wii U" setup of my KF, a remote desktop app, and and HDMI cable.

Well you'd be able to watch Netflix on the tablet while someone else watches TV, or I'm guessing even in a different room, depending on the range. I doubt I'll use it for video but I think a lot of people will.
TBH I don't think I've ever really watched videos on a portable device while infront of the TV. Internet and games? Definitely. Videos? Nope. That said I can definitely see the appeal of using the Wii U tablet to navigate. All of the wins of integrated TV youtube etc and remote control apps but without the clunkyness and control lag.

Netflix on Wii was surprisingly good despite people's expectations, but Netflix on Wii U.... it's going to be a beast. HD and a smart controller in your hands that you can switch the actual stream anytime you want. Amazing.
